Dispersion polymerization of acrylamide was carried out in the media of ethyl alcohol/water mixtures using hydroxypropyl cellulose and ammonium persulfate as steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. The effects of concentrations of initiator and steric stabilizer, amount of monomer, polymerization temperature, ethyl alcohol/water ratio, and purification of monomer and nitrogen purge on the particle size of the latices and molecular weight of the polymers were investigated. The average particle diameter increased with increasing concentration of initiator, water content in ethyl alcohol/water media, and polymerization temperature, but decreased with monomer and stabilizer concentrations. The viscosity average molecular weight increased with increasing concentrations of monomer, steric stabilizer, and water content in dispersion media, but decreased with initiator concentration and polymerization temperature. The PAM polymers prepared with the purified monomer and the nitrogen purging before the reaction showed the highest molecular weight. In this study, PAM latices of 0.5∼2.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ with 20000∼335000 in M$\_$v/ were prepared and the resulting PAM latices were all dissolved in water instantly.
Phenolic/furfural(P/F) gel microspheres were successfully produced by new supercritical $CO_2$-based process. $CO_2$-soluble poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was used as the stabilizer in this system. Spherical morphology of the gel microspheres was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Particle size and particle size distribution of P/F gel microspheres can be modified by variety of the solids content and the stabilizer content. The resultant P/F gel microspheres have average particle size in the range of 1-6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The structure of P/F gel microspheres was revealed by thermogravimetric analysis and IR analysis.
In preparing micron-sized monodisperse polystyrene beads by dispersion polymerization, the conversion, and the particle size and its distribution were affected by the reaction temperature, concentration of the monomer, solvent and initiator, molecular weight and concentration of the steric stabilizer, amount of oxygen existing in the reactor, and an appropriate combination of these starting materials. Ethanol as a dispersing agent, styrene as a monomer, PVP as a steric stabilizer, AIBN as an initiator, DVB as a cross-linking agent and toluene as a co-solvent were the basic materials for the synthesis. The reaction rate and the conversion were increased with the reaction temperature and the amount of DVB from 1 to 4%, and the conversion was saturated after 10 hours of the reaction time. The optimum reaction recipe for the preparation of the monodisperse PS beads was 25% styrene monomer, 0.5% DVB, 25% toluene, 10-15% PVP, and 2 and 4% AIBN, thereby, 3.9~4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3.4~9.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of polystyrene beads, respectively, were successfully synthesized.
Colloidal stability of the biodegradable nanoparticle was characterized by measuring the variation of particle size with time using photon correlation spectroscopy. Three kinds of polymers, namely, poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA), PLGA/poly(L-lactide) blends, and PLGA/poly(L-lactide)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) blends were used as matrix material for nanoparticle preparation. Nanoparticles were prepared with or without using poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) as suspension stabilizer to evaluate the condition of preparation. Nanoparticles from the blend of amphiphilic graft copolymer with short poly(ethylene glycol) chain and PLGA maintained suspension for 1 day when protein stock solution was introduced. This is somewhat improvement in colloidal stability against protein adsorption compared with that of nanoparticles without PEG moiety. Suspension stabilizer, PVA, had a significant effect on the colloidal stability against freezing and protein adsorption which led to coagulation of nanoparticles. It is important to consider effect of suspension stabilizer as well as materials used to prepare nanoparticle on the colloidal stability.
Dispersion polymerization of acrylamide in the media of t-butyl alcoho1/$H_2O$ mixtures at 30~5$0^{\circ}C$ in the presence of hydroxypropyl cellulose and ammonium persulfate as steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively, was carried out. It was studied the effects of concentrations of initiator and steric stabilizer, amount of monomer, polymerization temperature, t-butyl alcohol/$H_2O$ ratio, concentration of crosslinker, purification of monomer and nitrogen purge on the particle size of the resulting acrylamide latices and molecular weight of the latex-poly(acrylamide). In this study, poly(acrylamide) latices of 0.1~0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with 470000~2080000 in (equation omitted) were prepared and the resulting PAM latices were all dissolved in water in stantly.
We tried to prepare polystyrene composite particles containing carbon black by suspension polymerization with water as a reaction medium. Hydrophobic silica was selected as a stabilizer and oil-soluble azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), as an initiator. All polymerization reactions were carried out at a fixed temperature of $75^{\circ}C$. Stabilizer concentration was varied from $0.17{\sim}3.33wt%$ compared to water, where particles with $7.96{\mu}m$ in average diameter were obtained at 1.57 wt% of stabilizer. Increase in divinylbenzene concentration, as a crosslinking agent, from $0.1{\sim}1.0 wt%$ compared to monomer exhibited a large increase in average particle diameter Incorporation of 1wt% of carbon black compared to monomer produced an increase in average diameter It is speculated that viscosity lower than that necessary to induce even dispersion of carbon black particles led to poor dispersion, and as a result, large particles. For a styrene mixture containing 3 wt% carton black compared to monomer, enhanced dispersion due to an increase in carbon black concentration reduced average particle diameters. For styrene mixtures containing 1 and 3 wt% carbon black compared to monomer, preparticles before polymerization and polymer composite particles after polymerization showed a similar tendency towards particle formation. When carbon black concentration compared to monomer was increased to 5 and 7 wt%, styrene mixtures exhibited a large increase in viscosity and thus better dispersion of carbon black particles, which led to a decrease in preparticle diameters. However, these particles experienced agglomeration in the polymerization process, and polystyrene composite particles increased in average diameter.
A suspension polymerization of styrene In aqueous phase was employed to study if polystyrene particles ranging from 1 to $20{\mu}m$ can be produced. Hydrophobic silica was selected as a stabilizer and azo-bisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. Polymerization reaction was carried out at a selected temperature in the range of $65{\sim}95^{\circ}C$. Stabilizer concentration was varied from 0.17 to 3.33 wt% compared to the water while the concentration of the initiator was raised from 0.13 to 6.0 wt% compared to the monomer. Dispersion of hydrophobic silica into the water phase was achieved by precise control of pH. Optimum dispersion of silica was obtained at pH 10. Average particle diameter decreased with increasing amounts of stabilizer concentration initially, exhibiting the minimum average diameter at 1.67 wt% of stabilizer concentration, after which it started to Increase. It is speculated that an excessive presence of stabilizer encouraged a secondary reaction in the reaction medium, which led to particle agglomeration, and as a result an increase in average particle diameter. Molecular weight was found to be independent of stabilizer concentration between 0.13 and 1.00 wt% whereas, it increased when stabilizer concentration exceeded 1.67 wt%. Variation of molecular weight was probably caused by the reduced activity and efficiency of initiator due to the high concentration of silica, and the secondary reaction in the reaction medium, as well. An increase in the Initiator concentration and/or reaction temperature resulted in an increase in both reaction rate and particle diameter. Consequently, we have confirmed that spherical polystyrene particles with $1{\sim}20{\mu}m$ in diameter can be prepared by careful selection of the concentration of stabilizer, initiator, pH and reaction temperature.
Poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles were prepared by the modified spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. Polymer solution was prepared by two water-soluble organic solvents, such as ethanol and acetone. Because of its biocompatible nature, PEG-PPG diblock copolymer was used as surfactant and stabilizer. The influence of several preparative variables on the nanoparticle formation, such as type and concentration of stabilizing agent, stirring methods, water/oil phase ratio and polymer concentration were investigated in order to control and optimize the process. After preparation of nanoparticles, particle size and distribution were evaluated by the light scattering particle analyzer. As results, the particle size was 50-200 nm and dispersibility was monodisperse. It was found that the appropriate selections of binary solvent mixtures and polymeric concentrations in both organic and aqueous phases could provide a good yield and favorable physical properties of PLGA nanoparticles.
In order to synthesize polymer particle containing inorganic material, styrene and n-butylmethacrylate were copolymerized with alumina by dispersion polymerization. The weight ratio of styrene to n-butylmethacrylate was 3 : 1. A poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidon) was added as stabilizer. 2,2'-AzobisCisobutyronitrile) and 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane were used as initiator and coupling agent, respectively. The weight ratio of 70 : 30 of isopropanol to distilled water was used as dispersion medium. According to the TEM measurement, we could confirm that alumina was dispersed into the polymer particle. The increase 'of concentration of alumina resulted in enhancement of particle size, but decreased its distribution. By the XRD method, it was found that the increase of alumina concentration showed the increase of intensity in peak and the increased 2$\theta$ value. From the TGA measurement, the increase of alumina concentration caused high heat resistance of the polymer. With respect to the type of initiator, the longer half life of initiator, the smaller particle size. We also found that the increase of particle stabilizer concentration made the decreased of particle size due to the accelerated generation of polymer particle in the early stage of reaction.
New polymeric photostabilizers containing hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) were prepared by the reaction of liquid polyisoprene rubber grafted maleic anhydride (MAH) and 2,2,5,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol (TMPO). Their chemical composition and physical properties were characterized by titration, GPC and TGA analysis. The effects of polymeric HALS on the photooxidation of the styrene-butadiene rubber were studied from the UV, IR spectral changes, and photo-crosslinking was examined by the measurement of the insoluble fraction. The photooxidation of SBR upon irradiation was inhibited by addition of the new polymeric HALS. The extraction resistance of new polymeric photostabilizer was much better than that of the low molecular weight compound which is prepared by the reaction of MAH and TMPO. The new polymeric HALS ate fairly compatible with the SBR.
