Thermo-Optically Tunable Filter Using Evanescent Field Coupling Between Side-Polished Polarization Maintaining Fiber and Polymer Planar Waveguide (측면 연마된 편광유지 광섬유와 폴리머 평면도파로 사이의 소산장 결합을 이용한 열 광학 가변 필터)

  • We have demonstrated a tunable Inter based on an asymmetric directional coupler made of a side-polished polarization maintaining fiber coupled with a polymer planar waveguide. The thermo-optic effects of the polymer planar waveguide induced by a micro-strip heater placed on the top layer of the device leads to shift of resonance wavelength of the coupler. The fabricated device exhibited wide tunable range exceeding 230 nm with 720 ㎽ of applied electrical power.

  • We design and fabricate a novel tunable wavelength filter, which utilizes long-range surface plasmon-polaritons excited along nm-thick-metal strips. A gold metal strip, with $\sim$ cm length, 20 nm thickness, and $\sim$ 5$\mu$m width, is embedded in thick thermo-optic Polymer films supported by a silicon wafer. A dielectric Bragg grating structure is Placed on the metal strip, so that transmission signals at telecom wavelength are selected by thermal effect of the thermo-optic polymer. High extinction ratio of 25 dB and total insertion loss of $\sim$25 dB/cm can be measured by single-mode coupling of optical fibers. We also verify that wavelength tuning of the long-range surface plasmon-polariton filters can be achieved by electric current directly applied to the metal-strip waveguides.

  • A polymeric ring resonator with electrically variable extinction ratio at resonant wavelengths has been proposed and demonstrated. It consists of a ring waveguide coupled to a straight bus waveguide and a modulating electrode, which is formed in the outer cladding region outside of the ring. When electrical power is applied to the electrode, the refractive index of the polymers underneath the electrode is lowered to strengthen the confinement of the guided mode of the ring and thus the equivalent effective refractive index felt by the mode is decreased. Therefore, the propagation loss of the guided mode is reduced with the applied electrical power Consequently the extinction ratio at resonant wavelengths is varied by the electrical power. For the achieved results, the extinction ratio was changed by about 9 dB for the electrical power of 12 mW, when the propagation loss of the ring was reduced by 80 dB/cm.

Polymer Optical Microring Resonator Using Nanoimprint Technique (나노 임프린트 기술을 이용한 폴리머 링 광공진기)

  • A polymer optical microring resonator, which is laterally coupled to a straight bus waveguide, has been proposed and demonstrated using a nanoimprint technique. The propagation loss of the ring waveguide and the optical power coupling between the ring and bus waveguides was calculated by using a beam propagation method, then the dependence of the device performance on them was investigated using a transfer matrix method. We have especially introduced an imprint stamp incorporating a smoothing buffer layer made of a silicon nitride thin film. This layer played an efficient role in improving the sidewall roughness of the waveguide pattern engraved on the stamp and thus reducing the scattering loss. As a result the overall Q factor of the resonator was greatly increased. Also it reduced the gap between the ring and bus waveguides effectively to enhance the coupling between them, without relying on the direct writing method based on an e-beam writer. As for the achieved device performance at the wavelength of 1550 nm, the quality factor, the extinction ratio, and the free spectral range were ~103800, ~11 dB, and 1.16 m, respectively.

Fabrication of a low-power 1×2 polymeric thermo-optic switch with a trench structure (트렌치 구조를 이용한 저전력 1×2 폴리머 열 광학 스위치의 제작)

  • A low-power $1{\times}2$ polymeric thermo-optic switch with a trench structure is proposed and fabricated. The trench structure in the optimized region slows down the heat flow from the electrodes, which contributes to the reduction of power consumption. The temperature distribution in the polymer layers has been adjusted to increase the temperature gradient between the two arms of the Y-branch. For comparison, a $1{\times}2$ polymeric thermo-optic switch with no trench structure is fabricated together on the same substrate. In the device with a trench structure, the measured crosstalk is less than -17.0 dB for TE polarization.-15.0 dB for TM polarization. The power consumption is about 66 mW, which is 25% less than that of the device with no trench structure.

Refractometric Glucose Biosensor Incorporating a Vertically Coupled Microring Resonator in Polymeric Waveguides (수직형 폴리머 마이크로링 공진기 기반의 글루코스 바이오 센서)

  • A refractometric glucose biosensor incorporating a vertically coupled microring resonator in polymers was proposed and realized. The ring was covered with a target analyte of glucose solution with a certain concentration, so that its effective refractive index could be altered and, as a result, the resonance wavelength of the sensor was shifted. Therefore the concentration of the glucose solution can be estimated by observing the shift in the resonance wavelength. Two schemes were exploited for enhancing the sensitivity of the sensor. First, the effective refractive index of the polymeric waveguide used for the resonator sensor was adjusted to approach that of the target analyte as best as possible. Second, the ring waveguide, which serves as a crucial sensing part, was appropriately over-etched to enlarge its contact area with the analyte. The proposed resonator sensor was designed with the beam propagation method. The refractive indices of the core and cladding polymer involved were 1.430 and 1.375 respectively, leading to the waveguide's effective refractive index of ${\sim}1.390$, which is faiirly close to that of the glucose solution of ${\sim}1.333$. The prepared ring resonator with the $400-{\mu}m$ radius exhibited the free spectral range of 0.66 nm, the bandwidth of 0.15 nm, and the quality factor of 10,000. For the sensor operating at 1,550 nm wavelength, the achieved sensitivity was as great as 0.28 pm/(mg/dL), which is equivalent to 200 nm/RIU.

Optical implementation of optical switching by use of a multimode planar waveguide and hologram filters (다중모드 평면 도파로와 홀로그램 필터를 이용한 광신호 교환의 광학적 구현)

  • We present a method to implement an $M{\times}N$ switching system by use of an $M{\times}1$ multimode planar waveguide and N hologram filters. The $M{\times}1$ multimode planar waveguide provides the pass of optical signals and changes the output speckle patterns by applying an electrical signal. The complex speckle patterns generated from the multimode planar waveguide are recorded into the N hologram filters and used as the code for destination. The feasibility of our method is experimentally demonstrated.

  • Maskless laser patterning process is developed using 3rd harmonic Diode Pumped Solid State Laser with near visible wavelength of 355 nm. Photo-sensitive curable polymer is irradiated by UV laser and developed using polymer solvent to obtain quasi-3D patterns. We performed basic experiments for the various process conditions such as laser power, writing speed, laser focus, and polymer optical property to gain the optimal conditions. Experimentally, the patterns of trapezoidal shape were manufactured into dimension of 8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ width and 5.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ height. This process could be applied to fabricate a single mode waveguide without expensive mask projection method.

  • This work presents the analysis of $1\times2$ polymer waveguide thermo-optic switch using asymmetric Y-splitter at the wavelength of 1300nm. Because of the high thermo-optic coefficient of polymeric materials the design of efficient switches were feasible. For the numerical simulation of these switches the finite difference beam propagation method has been employed. Design rules for a $1\times2$ polymeric switch have been defined by using the numerical techniques.

  • 최근 광섬유의 전송 용량을 효율적으로 극대화하기 위한 방안으로서 파장 분할 다중화 (WDM: Wavelength Division Multiplexing) 방식의 광통신 시스템이 제안되어 사용되고 있다. WDM 시스템에서는 각 채널 (channel) 마다 각기 다른 파장의 광신호가 할당되어 있기 때문에, 여러 파장이 다중화된 광신호에서 원하는 파장의 광신호를 선택하기 위해서는 파장 선택 필터 (wavelength selective filter) 가 필요하다. 격자 보조 동방향 결합기 (GACC: Grating-Assisted Codirectional Coupler) 는 전파 상수(propagation constant) 가 서로 다른 두 도파로 사이에서의 광파워 교환이 파장에 의존하는 특성을 가지고 있기 때문에 WDM 시스템에 응용될 파장 선택 필터로서 많은 연구가 되어 왔다$^{(1),(2)}$ .
