  • An Emergency Destruction System is inevitable for ensuring safety both at sea and in populated areas, particularly during emergency detonations triggered by abnormal missile flight or upon mission completion. This paper introduces a novel method for developing an Emergency Destruction System capable of precisely calculating the Instantaneous Impact Point(IIP) during high-speed, maneuverable long-range surface-to-air missile flight tests. The Emergency Destruction System designed for long-range surface-to-air missile flight tests generates impact position tables that meticulously incorporate wind errors and navigation equations based on the Earth's ellipsoidal model. Factors such as the Coriolis effect and the direction of the gravitational acceleration vector are accounted for, significantly enhancing the accuracy of IIP determination amidst highly variable missile speed and attitude.

  • Three failure cases of CNG composite vessels were reported since after January 2005. The 1st and 2nd accidents were indebted to vessel defect and installation mistake. The 3rd was caused by gas leak at pipe connections. In this paper various aspects were studied based on information of the three failure analysis, which must be improved for better safety of the CNG bus system. Overpressure region caused by vessel explosion was theoretically predicted and also assessed by PHAST program. Explosion of 120 l vessel under 20 MPa is equivalent to 1.2 kg TNT explosion. The predicted value by PHAST was more serious than theoretical one. However, actual consequence of explosion was much less than both of the predicted consequences. Since the CNG vessel was designed by the performance based design methodology, it is difficult to verify whether the required process and tests were properly conducted or not after production. If material toughness is not enough, the vessel should be weak in brittle fracture at early in the morning of winter season since the metal temperature can be lower than the transition temperature. If autofrettage pressure is not correct, fatigue failure due to tensile stress during repeated charging is possible. One positive aspect is that fire did not ocurred after vessel failure. This may be indebted to fast diffusion of natural gas which hindered starting fire.

  • A full scale hydrodynamic simulation that requires an accurate reproduction of shock-induced detonation was conducted for design of an energetic component system. A detailed hydrodynamic analysis SW was developed to validate the reactive flow model for predicting the shock propagation in a train configuration and to quantify the shock sensitivity of the energetic materials. The pyrotechnic device is composed of four main components, namely a donor unit (HNS+HMX), a bulkhead (STS), an acceptor explosive (RDX), and a propellant (BPN) for gas generation. The pressurized gases generated from the burning propellant were purged into a 10 cc release chamber for study of the inherent oscillatory flow induced by the interferences between shock and rarefaction waves. The pressure fluctuations measured from experiment and calculation were investigated to further validate the peculiar peak at specific characteristic frequency (${\omega}_c=8.3kHz$). In this paper, a step-by-step numerical description of detonation of high explosive components, deflagration of propellant component, and deformation of metal component is given in order to facilitate the proper implementation of the outlined formulation into a shock physics code for a full scale hydrodynamic simulation of the energetic component system.

  • The internal chromium plating of a long-axis tube is widely used in military and industrial application, with the thick hard plating formed using a mixed solution of Chromium acid and catalytic $H_2SO_4$. A large-caliber gun can endure a high explosive force as a result of the increased stiffness and wear resistance provided by this internal hard chromium surface. The internal chromium layer of a tube is prone to exfoliation caused by the high kinetic energy of the projectile and high pressure of the explosion. Therefore, we reviewed the plating process. Chromium plating comprises many steps, including the removal of Grease, water cleaning, electrolytic abrasion, etching, plating, water cleaning, and hydrogen brittleness removal. The exfoliated chromium plating layer is affected by the adhesion property of the plating. In particular, the Fe concentration of the electrolyte affects the adhesion property. The optimum Fe concentration for effectively suppressing the exfoliation of the plating layer was established by using a scanning electron microscope to determine the surface roughness, and the effectiveness was proved in an adhesion test, etc.

  • A non-lethal weapon is a device that can subdue targets without causing death or mortal wounds. A high-intensity flash generator can negate electro-optical sensors and cause temporal flash blindness with a high intensity of light. In this study, we derive the design parameters of an explosive-driven high-intensity flash generator that uses the interaction of plasma caused by the detonation of explosives with surrounding inert gas. To determine the design parameters of the flash generator, we analyze test results measured using optical sensors. The experimental results show that the light intensity of xenon gas is about four times higher than that of air. In addition, the intensity increases with the weight of the explosive, and the inert gas cross-sectional area encountered a shock wave in the airframe. The light intensity caused by a double-initiation generator is about two times higher than that of the single-initiation generator.

  • This study deals with underwater explosion (UNDEX) characteristics of various non-explosive underwater shock sources for the development of non-explosive underwater shock testing devices. UNDEX can neutralize ships' structure and the equipment onboard causing serious damage to combat and survivability. The shock proof performance of naval ships has been for a long time studied through simulations, but full-scale Live Fire Test and Evaluation (LFT&E) using real explosives have been limited due to the high risk and cost. For this reason, many researches have been tried to develop full scale ship shock tests without using actual explosives. In this study, experiments were conducted to find the characteristics of the underwater shock waves from actual explosive and non-explosive shock sources such as the airbag inflators and Vaporizing Foil Actuator (VFA). In order to derive the empirical equation for the maximum pressure value of the underwater shock wave generated by the non-explosive impact source, repeated experiments were conducted according to the number and distance. In addition, a Shock Response Spectrum (SRS) technique, which is a frequency-based function, was used to compare the response of floating bodies generated by underwater shock waves from each explosion source. In order to compare the magnitude of the underwater shock waves generated by each explosion source, Keel Shock Factor (KSF), which is a measure for estimating the amount of shock experienced by a naval ship from an underwater explosionan, was used.

  • The numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate the behavior of slab-column connection subjected to blast loads using LS-DYNA. The typical form of slab-interior column connection for analysis was considered as a reference specimen and the drop panel slab-interior column was designed to verify the effects of drop panel. The slab-column connections, which were composed of interior, edge and corner column, were additionally analyzed to compare their confinement effects of specimens. Analysis results were contained the failure shape of connection, behavior of member and so on. From the results, the blast-resistant capacities of slab-column connection would be enhanced by reinforcing the drop panel. In addition, the performance of connections could be improved, when the confinement effects were enhanced.

  • We present a kevlar rope based Non-Explosive Actuator(NEA) device which has simple structure and is activated by burning Ni-Cr wire. Through performance test, we find it can be operated under various pre-load by simply changing turn number of Ni-Cr wire. It shows release time of 680ms and shock level of 110G under pre-load of 6.0kN. Launching environment and space environment tests are planned to verify performance of the NEA based on European Satellite Agency test manual. Conclusively, we expect the proposed NEA can be applicable to release solar panel and fairing separation.

  • For the safe handling of ethylbenzene, this study was investigated the explosion limits of ethylbenzene in the reference data. And the lower flash points, upper flash points and AITs(auto-ignition temperatures) by ignition delay time were experimented. The lower flash points of ethylbenzene by using Setaflash closed-cup and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers were experimented $20^{\circ}C$ and $22^{\circ}C$, respectively. The lower flash points ethylbenzene by using Tag and Cleveland open cup testers were experimented $25^{\circ}C$ and $28^{\circ}C$, respectively. Also, this study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659 tester for ethylbnezene. The experimental AIT of ethylbenzene was $430^{\circ}C$. The calculated LEL and UEL by using the measured lower flash point and upper flash point were 0.93 Vol.% and 7.96 Vol.%, respectively.
