Assessment of Slip Sinkage of an Off-Road Tracked Vehicle from Model Track Experiments (모형궤도시험을 통한 야지궤도차량의 슬립침하 평가)

  • When a tracked vehicle travels off-road, shearing action and ground sinkage occur on the soil-track interface and severely affect tractive performance of the tracked vehicle. Especially, the ground sinkage, which is induced by vehicle's weight (hereinafter referred to as static sinkage) and longitudinal forces in the direction of travel producing slip (hereinafter referred to as slip sinkage), develops soil resistance, directly restricting the tractive performance of an off-road tracked vehicle. Thus, to assess the tractive performance of an off-road tracked vehicle, it is imperative to take both of static sinkage and slip sinkage into consideration. In this research, a series of model track experiments was conducted to investigate the slip sinkage which has not been clarified. Experiment results showed that the slip sinkage increased with increasing the slip ratio, but the increasing rate gradually decreased. Also, the slip sinkage was found to increase as relative density of soil decreased and imposed vertical load increased. From the experiment results, the normalized slip sinkage defined as slip sinkage to static sinkage calculated in the identical condition was investigated, and an empirical equation for the slip sinkage was developed in terms of slip ratio, which allows vehicle operators to predict the slip sinkage in a given soil and operating conditions.

  • Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the addition of ginseng meal to distillers feed on the silage quality, and feed intake and dry matter (DM) digestibility in goats. In Experiment I, three levels of ginseng meal (0.15, and 30%) were added to the distillers feed to make three types (treatment) of distillers feed silages (DFS), There were five replicates per treatment. Samples of 20 kg each were put into vinyl bag and vacuumed by an air compressor. Vinyl bags were kept at $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ for 30 days before being analyzed. In Experiment II, 12 male Korean native goats were employed to investigate the DM intake and digestibility of silages from Experiment I. There were 4 replicates per treatment.   • To investigate the control effect of insect pests by natural enemies, sticky traps were used in commercial tomato greenhouses in Chun-cheon and the experiment fields of Gangwon-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Republic of Korea using semi-forcing culture (February to June). We selected low toxicity pesticides, environment-friendly agricultural materials (EFAM), and natural enemies of the study species, combinations of which have been previously used in farms to control insect pests. In this study, Trialeurodes vaporariorum and thrips, which are major agricultural insect pests, were studied in experimental greenhouses. The adult T. vaporariorum population was observed in mid-April and the population of thrips showed occurrences in early April. Regarding seasonal fluctuation, T. vaporariorum peaked in mid-May and thrips peaked after June. one insecticide, spiromesifen suspension concentrate (SC); one fungicide, cyazofamid SC; and two EFAMs containing neem tree extract were shown to be slightly toxic to Encarsia formosa and Orius laevigatus. The results of this study could be used to develop management models using natural enemies of control the insect pests; T. vaporariorum and thrips in semi-forcing culture of tomato.

Current Status of Post - harvest Management of Barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) (보리수확후 건조, 저장 및 유통 실태)

  • This study was carried out to understand the problems, and find out the solution of post - Harvest related procedures for barley in Korea. Consecutive post - harvest procedures in harvesting, drying, milling, packaging and marketing methods were collaborately surveyed at Bujeok (Chungchongnamdo) and Kunsuh (Cholanamdo) agricultural cooperative federation where Chalssalbori (waxy barley) and Ssalbori (non waxy barley) were collectively cultivated in a group farming area, respectively. An early harvesting and relatively short harvesting period within 15 to 20 days to transplanting rice plants as a succeeding crop lead to produce undergrade barley and 2 to 3% harvesting loss were considered as the problem that should be improved. In drying of barley, wide moisture content range of harvested barley among the different farmers and cultivation land was made difficult barley drying unifomly when they were dried in same dryer and drying temperature was slightely higher with 50 to 70$\^{C}$ than that of optimum temperature (under 50$\^{C}$) fer barley drying for producing the high quality barley. Dried barley packaged in ton-bag or 3P bag and put into the rectangular grain bin were stored in ambient temperature warehouse and milled for marketing through whole you. The physico-chemical properties and taste of stored barley were fairly maintained until May next year.

  • Freeze storage technique is widely used for food processing to keep freshness and quality of the product. This technique was applied to fresh, unshelled groundnut to develop a new type of product which could maintain fresh taste and nutritive values even after several months of storage. The groundnut varieties, Daepungtangkong, Daekwangtangkong and Sindaekwangtangkong were grown at the experimental field of NCES in 1996. Immatured pods or groundnut were harvested around 20 to 3o days before full maturity, washed, and steamed at 100$^{\circ}C$ for 5 min. to stop enzyme activity. After vacuum packing (at -760mmHg for 10 min.) with 0.08mm polyvinyldichloride film, the pods were immediately frozen at -70$^{\circ}C$ for 24h and transfered at -20$^{\circ}C$ for long-term storage. Physico-chemical properties of frozen vegetable groundnut were investigated at 2 months after storage and compared to those of conventionally dried groundnut. After 2 months storage, the thawed kernels were very palatable with softness and fresh taste. Acid value and hardness (measured as the compression force on the probe of a texture analyzer) were much lower in frozen vegetable groundnut than those in the air-dried ones. Presence of free sugars is one of the important factors affecting groundnut taste, and the free sugar contents were considerably decreased in the frozen vegetable groundnut compared to freshly harvested groundnut. But in dried groundnut no free sugar was detected.

Quality comparison of hot-water leachate from teabags containing Citrus junos peels dried using different methods (건조방법을 달리한 유자껍질 티백차의 품질특성 비교)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of drying methods for Citrus junos peels on quality characteristics of the hot-water leachate from teabags containing those peels. Fresh peels were hot-air ($50^{\circ}C$), cold-air ($30^{\circ}C$), or freeze-dried ($-45^{\circ}C$), powdered to a size of 40 mesh, packaged with a paper sachet, and then the packaged teabags were leached for 10 min with hot-water ($70^{\circ}C$). $L^*$ value (lightness) and $-a^*$ value (greenness) of the peel powder were the highest in the freeze-dried samples. Soluble solids and titratable acidity of the teabag leachate were in the following order; cold-air, freeze, and hot-air dried samples. Among free sugar contents in all samples, fructose content was the highest, followed by glucose and sucrose. Fructose and glucose contents were not affected by drying methods. There was no significant difference in the flavonoid content among the peels dried using three drying methods. DPPH radical-scavenging activity of the leachate was the highest in the cold-air dried sample. These results suggest that cold-air drying would be an effective method to enhance the quality of hot-water leachate of teabags prepared from C. junos peels.

  • 15 carbon footprint product (CFP) schemes, including Korea Carbon Footprint Label, UK Carbon Trust's Carbon Reduction Label and Japan CFP are implemented in the world. A CFP describes green house gases (GHGs) emissions emitted throughout product's life cycle and is intended to reduce GHGs emissions by labeling a CFP result on product. This study calculates Korea, UK and Japan CFP result of vacuum cleaner, detergent, packagin material in order to analyze the Korea, UK and Japan CFP standards. Our results demonstrate significant differences among then calculated results because of criteria, emission factors, etc. Therefore, there are many difficulties in providing various CFP results and the international standard and guidelines for product category are needed.

Diversity and Pathogenicity of Fusarium Species Associated with Grain Mold of Sorghum (수수 이삭곰팡이 증상에서 분리한 Fusarium속 균의 다양성 및 병원성)

  • Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench) was traditionally grown on a small scale, however, at present its cultivation is getting momentum in terms of food and animal feed crop throughtout the Korea. Grain mold symptoms of the plant were frequently observed during disease surveys in Korea from 2007 to 2009. The symptoms were highly variable. Severely infected grain was fully covered with mold and partially infected grain may look normal or discolored. Ninety isolates of Fusarium species were obtained from the diseased plants collected from several locations in the country. Among the collected Fusarium isolates, 41 were identified as Fusarium thapsinum, 23 as F. proliferatum, 12 as F. graminearum, 5 as F. incarnatum, and 3 as F. equiseti based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Elongation factor 1 alpha gene sequences of the isolates were used for phylogenetic analysis. Analyses of the sequences revealed that the isolates were confirmed to be identical with related species of NCBI GenBank. Pathogenicity tests showed that three dominant species, F. thapsinum, F. proliferatum and F. graminearum were strongly virulent to grains of sorghum. This study is the first report of sorghum grain mold caused by Fusarium species in Korea.

Characterization of Fusarium udum Causing Fusarium Wilt of Sunn Hemp in Korea (클로탈라리아 시들음병을 일으키는 Fusarium udum의 특성)

  • Sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) is used as a nitrogen-fixing green manure in Korea to improve soil quality, reduce soil erosion, and suppress weeds and nematodes. In 2014, wilting sunn hemp plants were observed in green manure-cultivated fields in Wanju, Korea. Leaves of the infected plants began yellowing, starting with the lower leaves, eventually leading to their death. Moreover, a number of dark perithecia were observed on the wilting stems. Six isolates were obtained from these perithecia by single spore isolation. Based on their morphological characteristics, the isolates were identified as Fusarium udum (teleomorph: Gibberella indica). Macroconidia were slightly curved with almost hooked apical cell, and microconidia were formed on false heads by monophialides. Chlamydospores were produced abundantly in the hyphae, either singly or in clusters. To confirm the identification, multilocus sequence analysis was conducted using translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF), calmodulin (CAL), and histone 3 (HIS3). The sequences of TEF, CAL, and HIS3 showed 94.4~96.2%, 99.7%, and 99.6~99.8% similarity to the reference sequences of F. udum in NCBI GenBank, respectively. Pathogenicity was tested on sunn hemp and two soybean cultivars using the inoculation method of soil drenching with spore suspension. The wilting symptoms were observed only in sunn hemp and one cultivar of soybean (cv. Teagwang) after 14~21 days of inoculation. This is the first report of wilt disease in sunn hemp caused by Fusarium udum in Korea.

Diversity and Pathogenic Characteristics of Fusarium Species isolated from Wilted Soybeans in Korea (콩 시들음병에 관여하는 Fusarium균의 다양성 및 병원학적 특성)

  • Wilted soybean plants were collected from soybeans cultivation fields in Korea from 2014 to 2016. Fusarium spp., Colletotrichum spp., Rhizoctonia spp., Macrophomina sp., Phytophthora spp., and Calonectria ilicicola were obtained from the infected samples. Out of these, Fusarium spp. were the dominant species (79.1%). In total, 53 isolates were identified as F. solani species complex, F. oxysporum species complex, F. graminearum species complex, and F. fujikuroi species complex based on mycological characteristics. Sequence typing analysis was conducted using translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF) to confirm the identification of isolates. All isolates were identified as F. solani, F. oxysporum, F. commune, F. asiaticum, and F. fujikuroi based on phylogenetic analysis of TEF sequences. Pathogenicity of 44 isolates was tested on three cultivars of soybean using the root dip inoculation method. Out of 5 Fusarium species, only F. asiaticum could not cause the symptoms or be weak. Ten isolates were selected based on pathogenic characters and species identification to investigate the host range and screen soybean cultivars for resistance. Fusarium solani, F. oxysporum, and F. commune were aggressive only to soybean, and F. fujikuroi was aggressive to kidney bean, yellow cowpea, black cowpea, adzuki bean as well as soybean. All 13 Korean soybean cultivars were susceptible to F. commune and F. fujikuroi. Out of 13 cultivars, cv. Janggi, cv. Poongsannamul, and cv. Socheongja were resistant to Fusarium wilt, while cv. Hwanggeumol and Chamol were susceptible to Fusarium wilt.
