Antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella typhimurium and Klebsiella pneumoniae died readily after their addition to raw sewage, but they grew in sterilized sewage. The decline was not a result of antibiotic stresses, and because the bacteria were able to survive in large numbers for at least 15 days in solutions containing no organic nutrients, it was not a result of competition. Toxin production, bacteriophages, and Bdellovibrio did not cause the disappearance of the two bacterial species. A decline was also evident if the sewage was first passed through a $3-{\mu}m$ filter or treated with cycloheximide or cycloheximide plus nystatin, but protozoa developed under these conditions. Little or no decline occurred if the sewage was filtered and treated with the eucaryotic inhibitors before adding S. typhimurium or K. pneumoniae, and protozoa were not detected. S. typhimurium increased in abundance if cycloheximide, streptomycin, and erythromycin or large amounts of glucose were added to sewage. Tetrahymena thermophilus did not significantly reduce the population of S. typhimurium in buffer when the density of the bacterium was about $10^4/ml$. However, when more than $10^8$ Enterobacter agglomerans cells per ml were added to the buffer, T. thermophilus reduced the abundance of E. agglomerans and S. typhimurium to $10^6$ and 10/ml, respectively. The density of S. typhimurium was further decreased by a second increment of E. agglomerans cells. The disappearance of S. typhimurium and K. pneumoniae from sewage thus is the result of predation by protozoa. It is proposed that predators will eliminate a prey species from a natural environment when an alternate prey is present at concentrations above the threshold number for active feeing by the predator and when the rate of growth of the prey is less than the rate of predation.
Boring caracteristics, boring rate, and predation, rates on the valves of the seed and adult clams of Meretrix petechialis by Glossaulax didyma didyma in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor rearing aquarium were investigated by various morphometric data. The investigations were carried out from June to September, 2007. The morphology of drilled holes on the valves of M. petechialis showed the crater type as seen in the spats of Ruditapes philippinarum and M. lusoria. The sizes of the outer diameters of holes were greater than the inner diameters of the holes on the valves of M. petechialis in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor aquarium at the laboratory. On the whole, the sizes of the holes on the valves of the seeds of M. petechialis was smaller than those bored holes on the adult valves. The location of the bored holes on the valves of the seeds varied widely with the the sizes of the individuals of M. petichialis, while most of holes on the valves of adult clams were located near the umbo position of the valves of the clams in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor aquarium at the laboratory. On the whole, the outer and inner diameters of the bored holes increased with increase of shell lengths of the clams in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor rearing aquarium at the laboratory. The authors could confirm experimentally the boring snail, G. didyma didyma, drilled the seeds and adult clams of M. petechialis. In the experiments for 15 days (three times repeated) in the indoor rearing aquarium at the laboratory, the mortality of dead shells to total shells of M. petechialis by boring snail Glossaulax didyma didyma was totally average 41.5%, and percent of drilled shells to total dead shells of clams by the boring snail was average 47.1%. Of total shells, percent of drilled shells to total shells of clams by the boring snail was totally average 19.3%. Predation of G. didyma didyma were greater at night than the day time. Average 0.5 seed and adult individuals of M. petewchialis were consumed per G. didyma didyma, per day. Predation varied with shell lengths of M. petechialis and shell widths of G. didyma didyma.

This study was performed to investigate the biological characteristics of the brown lacewing Micromus angulatus (Stephens) at four different temperatures (15, 20, 25, and $30^{\circ}C$) and $70{\pm}10%$ relative humidity under a photoperiodic regime of 16:8(L:D) h. The developmental threshold and effective accumulative temperature from egg to pupa for M. angulatus were $9.6^{\circ}C$ and 270.3 day-degrees, respectively. The developmental period of egg, larva, and pupa at $25^{\circ}C$ was 4.4, 5.5, and 6.9 days. respectively. The longevity of an adult female M. angulatus was 34.9 days. The oviposition period for M. angulatus was 28.7 days, in which it laid a total number of 515.2 eggs during its life span. The maximum number of eggs laid by a female in a day was 54.8. Daily consumption by M. angulatus at $25^{\circ}C$ was 18.9 $1^{st}$ instars, 47.2 $2^{nd}$ instars, 57.7 $3^{rd}$ instars, and 91.0 adults of the glasshouse potato aphid, Aulacorthum solani. Therefore, M. angulatus could be a promising biological control agent against aphids.
The bloom of the genus Stephanodiscus was gradually extinguished after 18 April. Counts of bacterial population were increased as the diatom bloom was disappeared. Numbers of the heterotrophic nanoflagellates and ciliates were also increased during the disappearance of the bloom. The densities of the mesozooplankton, the major predator of the diatoms, started to increase in April. However, their growth was suppressed during the bloom period of the diatoms (from January to March). During the bloom period of the diatoms, the monthly average value of the basic productivity amounted up to 11,765.7 mgC $m^{-2}day^{-1}$, which is relatively high value considering the low temperature and light during that period. The growth rate of phytoplankton in March, when the bloom was beginning to be supressed was 0.007. The growth rate of phytoplankton was negative value in April when the decreasing of the algal density was started.

Cortisol, a steroid hormone, functions within metabolism, immune response, and stress. Intense or prolonged physical exercise increases cortisol levels to enhance the gluconeogenesis pathway and stabilize blood glucose level. However, cortisol also exerts a negative impact on muscle function and creates a stressful environment in skeletal muscle cells. The present study investigated the function of cortisol as a stress hormone. To examine the effect of the exercise-induced hormone cortisol on skeletal muscles, C2C12 cells were cultured and treated with cortisol at different concentrations. As a result, we found that the morphology of C2C12 changed remarkably with 5 ug/ml cortisol treatment. Western blot analysis was conducted to learn whether ER-stress and autophagy were induced. We found that the expression ratio of LC3I/LC3II decreased and BiP expression increased after cortisol treatment. In addition, immunocytochemistry analysis with IER3 antibody clearly showed that apoptosis is induced after 12-hour cortisol treatment. These results indicate that cortisol treatment could induce apoptosis, ER-stress, and autophagy in muscle cells. This study would provide valuable information in the study of the effects of exercise on skeletal muscle cells and the development of additives to reduce cortisol stress.

Developmental characteristics of Geocoris pallidipennis were investigated at a constant temperature ($20{\pm}1$, $25{\pm}1$, $30{\pm}1$, $35{\pm}1$, $37.5{\pm}1$ and $40{\pm}1^{\circ}C$), under long day illumination 16:8 (L:D) and constant relative humidity ($80{\pm}10%$). From egg to adulthood, the lower developmental threshold and the effective accumulative temperature were $14.8^{\circ}C$ and 399.1 day-degree, respectively. The experimental results at $35^{\circ}C$ were as follows. The egg period was 5.6 days (hatchability: 81.1%) and the nymphal period was 14.3 days (1st: 3.2, 2nd: 2.2, 3rd: 2.7, 4th: 2.7, 5th: 3.6). Female longevity was 33.8 days and the oviposition period was 29.2 days. Total egg production was 111.2 eggs and the maximum daily egg production was 14.8 eggs (in 7th days). However, although some eggs and nymphs developed at $37.5^{\circ}C$, G. pallidipennis could not develop at $40^{\circ}C$, The total egg production at $40^{\circ}C$ was only 22.1 eggs. When G. pallidipennis was fed on Bemisia tabaci pupae, daily prey consumption by nymphs (1st, 3rd and 5th) and adults was 1.9, 7.3, 18.7 and 29.5, respectively.
This study collected specimens dark sleeper (Odontobutis platycephala) in the Jaho stream from March to November 2022 to investigated their feeding habits. The sizes were classified by age (1 year and 2 years old, and 3 years old or older). The food organisms of O. platycephala included Haplotaxida belonging to the Clitellata of Annelida, Isopoda, Amphipoda, and Decapoda of the Malacostraca, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, and Trichoptera belonging to the aquatic insect of Arthropoda, fish. Korean dark sleepers fed mostly on aquatic insects, crustaceans, and fish. Aquatic insects were the most important food source, with 82.32% of the population, 46.33% in biomass, and 80.84% in the index of relative importance. Among the fish fed, Coreoperca herzi and Zacco koreanus young fish were abundant, and Odontobutis platycephala young fish were also eaten due to cannibalism. Korean dark sleepers were carnivorous in diet and belonged to the stalker in food intake characteristics and forms. A food migration was observed since less Diptera was found, and more fish were found in the biomass of the feed consumed by larger pecies. Fish (40.79%), Ephemeroptera (29.17%), and Isopoda (13.63%) were mainly fed in the spring, fish (52.65%), Ephemeroptera (23.17%), and Amphipoda (6.12%) were abundant in the summer, and Ephemeroptera (36.83%), fish (23.99%), and Trichoptera (23.49%) were mainly fed in the autumn.
The experiment was performed to evaluate the possibility of utilizing underground sea water for the seed production of tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes. For this purpose, the effects of 6 different salinities (3.5, 7.0, 14.0, 20.0, 27.0, $33.0\%_{\circ}$) were determined based on the hatching rate of fertilized eggs, survival rate and the amount of food consumed by hatched larvae, where as the effects of 3 different salinities (20.0, 27.0, $33.0\%_{\circ}$) were also examined with rearing tiger puffer juvenile ($4.29{\pm}0.50$ cm in total length) for 50 days in the closed recirculating water system. As a results, either the hatching or the survival rate of more than $70.0\%$ were obtained from the fertilized eggs reared at the salinity of 27.0 to $33.0\%_{\circ}$, the early hatched larvae at 27.0 to $33.0\%_{\circ}$, and the 10-day-old larvae at 20 to $33.0\%_{\circ}$. At three different salinities, the survival rate of 20-day- and 30-day-old larvae turned out to be $89.0\%$ and $92.5\%$, respectively. The salinity for maximum food intake thus appeared to be from 27.0 to $33.0\%_{\circ}$. In this condition, 20-day-old hatched larvae consumed $323\~342$ Artemia nauplii and 30-day-old hatched larvae ate $1,559\~1,5791$ A. nauplii. The highest growth rate of fingerlings were observed at the salinity $27\%$ and followed by 33.0 and $20.0\%_{\circ}$, respectively. The relationship between the days of rearing (X) and the total length (Y) of the fingerlings were as follows : $33.0\%_{\circ}$ group : Y=0.107X-2.532 (r=0.982) $27.0\%_{\circ}$ group : Y=0.116X-3.195 (r=0.975) $20.0\%_{\circ}$ group : Y=0.116X-2.693 (r=0.987) The slopes of regression line estimated from $27.0\%_{\circ}$ and $33.0\%_{\circ}$ groups were significantly different from that of $20.0\%_{\circ}$ group.
