This study was to determine the technical feasibility of using wastepaper fibers, obtained through dry processing of wastepaper, as reinforcement in thin cement produces. Dry-processed waste papers have high levels of noncellulosic impurities, and the recycling process also breads and damages the fibers. To produce wastepaper fiber-cement composites, first the influential variables in the slurry-dewatering method of processing the composites were identified in an experimental study based on factorial design. Among the proportioning and processing variables investigated, fiber mass fraction and level of substitution of virgin fibers with recycled ones were found to have statistically significant effects on mechanical and physical properties of composites. Subsequently, response surface analysis techniques were used to devise an experimental program that helped determine the optimum combinations of the selected influential variables based on mechanical and physical properties, and cost.
A pretreatment method to increase enzymatic digestibility for waste paper such as newspaper was investigated. Ash content, substrate size and printed ink were considered to be factors that affect on enzymatic hydrolysis. The effect on enzymatic digestibility of varying these factor were measured. Printed ink had the highest effect of the three factors, so a method was developed to remove the ink during pretreatment. Fist, a pretreatment process using a percolation reactor was tried. The digestibility of the substrate pretreated at 170$\^{C}$, however, was less than that of the untreated substrate because only small portion of ink was removed. Therefore, a batch type process at less than 100$\^{C}$ was devised. Of several schemes, a method using amonia-hydrogen peroxide mixture on a shaking bath proved most effective. The digestibility obtained from this method was about 85%--approximately 20% greater than the untreated substrate. This proves the pretreatment method was very effective in treating waste paper. The high digestibility obtained from this pretreatment is probably due to the effects of the hydrogen peroxide that can enhance ink removal and substrate swelling.
In this investigation, we observed surface morphology and porosity of a macroporous adsorbent made of Na-bentonite and Ca-bentonite as structure formation materials and grounded waste paper as macropore forming material for the development of a permeable reactive barrier to remove heavy metals in groundwater. Therefore, we selected minerals having higher cation exchange capacity among 2:1 clay minerals and other industrial minerals because sintering can significantly influence cation exchange capacity, resulting in drastic decrease in removal of heavy metals. The results showed that the increasing sintering temperature drastically decreased CEC by less than 10 % of the indigenous CEC carried by the selected minerals. One axial compressibility test results showed that the highest value was obtained from 5% newspaper waste pulp for both structure formation materials of Na-bentonite and Ca-bentonite although there were not much difference in bulk density among treatments. The pore formation influenced by sintering temperature and period contributes removal of heavy metals passing through the sintered macroporous media having different water retention capacity.
This study was to investigate the effects oi agitation speed, pulp concentration, ion concentration ill the slurry solution, printed area of the waste newspaper, immerwng time and the temperature on the defiberation process for the waste newspaper. The defikration efficiency at 50% is twice that of 16%. The efficiency is improved as two times according to elevate the agtation speed as two times in the range of 200-2WO r.p.m.. Defiberation with NaOH 1X10-'M solution has higher efficiency than that of NaOH 1 x 1 0 - M solution as 3 times at the conditions of 16%, 1200 r.p.m, and 1% pulp concentration The temperature of immersing salut~on aifects on the efficiency more than immersing time does. Increasing the printed area of newspaper decreases the velocity of defiberation. The alkaline solution is effective to defiberate and the defiberation efficiency at the same dosage of alkalinity is in the order a1 NaOH) KOH) Na,SiO, ) Na,CO, ) Ca(OH)2.
Experiments were carried out to pursue the availability and the feasibility of utilizable cellulosic materials as substrate for the production of cellulosic single cell protein. The resuluts were obtained as fellows. 1. Effects of carbolydrates as a sole carton source on the growth of Cellulomonas flavigena KIST 321 were examined. The result showed that cellulose and xylose would be most utlizable for cell mass production. 2. Alkaline treated waste papers and clothes resulted in good growth of the organism than intact ones did. However the waste papers as substrate of cellulosic fermentation were not digestible, even if the meterial was treated with alkalies. 3. Rice straw, rape straw and panic grass appeared to be good substrates for the cell mass production. 4. Leaves were proved to be a good substrate for the cell mass production, but wood sawdust was hardly digested by merely alkaline treatment. 5. When cellulosic wastes as the substrate were examined into the concentration of alkaline solution, the result suggested that the best productivity of cell mass from cellulosic materials was obtained on treatment with 0.8∼1.0% NaOH solution. 6. The productivity of cell mass was increased by washing out with water after alkaline treatment of newspaper, pine sawdust, lime sawdust and pine leaf.
This study was carried out to develop the Korean paper(Hanji) sludge-wood fiber composite boards utilizing the relinquished sludges occurring from the making process of Korean classic paper Hanji. The bark of paper mulberry(Broussonetia kazinoki Sieb.) has been used as a raw material since past hundreds and thousands years. Korean paper(Hanji) sludge was divided into two kinds, the one was the white sludge from the first stage and the other was the black sludge occurring from the final stage of Korean paper(Hanji) making. Four levels of the mixed ratio of each white or black sludge to wood fiber(10:90, 20:80, 30:70 and 40:60), three levels of the resin adhesives(PMDI, urea and phenol resin) and three levels of the density(0.60, 0.75 and 0.90) were designed to investigate the physical properties of Korean paper(Hanji) sludge-wood fiber composite boards. From the results and discussion, it could be concluded as follows : 1. In the white sludge-wood fiber composite board, the thickness swelling was not affected by the specific gravity and sludge additive of composite boards, but among the resin adhesives PMDI resin showed the best dimensional stability. Water absorption was superior in urea resin, secondly PMDI resin and very poor in phenol resin. 2. In the black sludge-wood fiber composite board, thickness swelling was superior in PMDI resin but very poor in phenol resin. In water absorption, PMDI and urea resin showed good results, regardless of specific gravity or sludge additive, but phenol resin showed poor results. 3. From the results and discussion of physical properties it is suggested that the white sludge-wood fiber composite boards bonded with PMDI or black sludge-wood fiber composite boards bonded with urea resin were made possibly with similar or better properties. compared with general fiberboard until the addition of 20% sludge into wood fiber.
The xylanase producing microorganisms occurring on rotten woods were selectively isolated on the modified Czapek-Dox medium supplemented with 0.5% xylan as a sole carbon source. Among more than three-hundred isolates of xylanase producing microorganisms, only two bacterial isolates were turned out to be more potent xylanase producer than the reference strain of xylanase producer, Aureobaszdium pullulans NRRL Y-2311. The exo-xylanase producer, bacterial isolate No. 33 was identified as a strain of Pseudomonas sp. on the basis of morphological and biochemical characterizations as well as cellular fatty acid composition. Optima of pH and of temperature for enzyme reactions of xylanase were 5.5 and $50^{\circ}C$ respectively. The enzyme was stable in a range of pH 5.0~7.0 and below $45^{\circ}C$. Among the number of carbohydrate substrates, xylose was turned out to be a potent inducer of Pseudomonas sp. No.33 exo-xylanase. Among the raw materials tested, rice straw was the best material for xylanase production by Pseudomonas sp. strain No. 33.

Environment-friendly shock-absorbing materials were made of wastepaper such as Korean old corrugated containers(KOCC) and Korean old newsprint (KONP) with a vacuum forming method. The plate-like cushioning materials made of KOCC and KONP respectively by vacuum forming showed superior shock-absorbing properties with lower elastic moduli compared to expanded polystyrene (EPS) and pulp mold. Even though the plate-like materials had many free voids in their fiber structure, their apparent densities (${\approx}0.1g/cm^3$) were a little higher than that of EPS (${\approx}0.03g/cm^3$) and much lower than that of pulp mold(${\approx}0.3g/cm^3$). However, the elastic moduli of the cushioning materials made of wastepaper were much lower than that of EPS or pulp mold. This finding implies that the cushioning materials made of KOCC fibers containing more lignin than KONP show better shock-absorbing properties than KONP. Moreover, the cushioning materials made of KOCC and KONP respectively showed greater porosity than pulp mold. The addition of cationic starch to the cushioning materials contributed to the increase in the elastic modulus to the same level as that of EPS. Furthermore, the deterioration in fiber quality by repeated use of wastepaper played a positive role in improving shock-absorbing ability.

It is very important to utilize effectively fibrous waste paper in terms of cost savings, environmental effects, and governmental policies. The quality of final products and runnability of papermaking process are primarily affected by constitutions of fibrous raw materials. In specific, board grade paper depends directly on compositions of waste paper bales. At present, the raw materials of board grade paper are mainly derived from lots kinds of wastepaper. Some papermaking countries, like EU, USA and Japan have advanced classification and management systems of recycled fiber, but Korea has not yet organized systematically. In this study, evaluation of wastepaper bale compositions and their fiber properties were carried out for effective utilization of fibrous raw materials for board grade paper production. 3 kinds of wastepaper bales were classified to fibrous or non-fibrous materials. In case of fibrous materials, KOCC, kraft sack paper and white duplex board matters were main component in total weight basis, and in case of non-fibrous materials, vinyl, plastic and cloth matters were main component, in turns. 3 representative kinds of waste paper were disintegrated and classified, and then prepared to handsheet for evaluation of recycled fiber property. Consequently, fines and ash content of waste paper, isolated from KOCC and white duplex board were higher than that of kraft sack paper. pH values of all kinds of waste fibers were neutral or weak alkaline.

In the manufacture of corrugated box, the fibrous raw materials are mainly consisted of recycled papers, such as KOCC(Korean Old Corrugated Container), kraft sack, and AOCC(American Old Corrugated Container). Among these recycled waste paper, the proportion of KOCC is relatively higher than others in fibrous raw materials. Generally, KOCC shows some poor fiber properties and contains hazardous heavy metal sources. Therefore, it is to evaluate the property of recycled paper sources for eco-friendly corrugated box manufacture. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of 3 kinds of recycled fibers and their mixed stocks were analyzed. The environmental assessment was also evaluated by analyzing the 4 representative heavy metal contents and evaporation residues in waste papers. As the results, KOCC showed the poorest fiber qualities and had the highest heavy metal contents and evaporation residues among the recycled fibers. Finally, the mechanical strength properties were increased by decreasing KOCC proportion of mixed stock conditions. In addition, the heavy metal contents and evaporation residues were also decreased by increasing recycled AOCC and kraft sack proportion.
