Background of the automobile recycling law enactment in Japan

  • On July 5,2002 the Law Concerning Recycling of End-of Life Vehicles popularly known as the "Automobile Recycling Law" was enacted in Japan. This paper examines the features of this Law, reasons why the Law was brought into existence, and its predicted impacts on the automobile industry. Pursuant to the Law, the current automobile recycling system was replaced by a new one in January 1, 2005.

  • 지금까지 제조업체는 생산 및 물류 시스템의 효율성 증대를 통한 제품판매 증가에만 주의를 기울여왔다. 그러나 환경에 대한 관심이 높아지고, 관련 법규가 엄격해지면서 폐기물 처리와 재활용이 기업의 생존을 위한 중요한 과제로 떠오르고 있다. 자동차 제조업계에서 역시 폐자동차 재사용 및 재활용에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있으나, 한국에서는 자동차 산업의 외형적 성장과는 달리 이에 대한 시스템 구축이 미비한 상태이다. 본 연구에서는 폐자동차의 재활용에 관한 외국의 사례를 조사하고, 폐자동차의 회수 및 해체 촉진을 위한 바람직한 정부 정책 모델을 제시하려 한다.

Analysis and Separation of Constituent Materials of Old Car by Shredding Process (폐자동차 파쇄를 통한 주요구성물질의 분리 및 분석평가)

  • Analysis and separation of constituent materials of old car have been performed by using the industrial shredding line. For this aim, three old cars made by domestic automobile manufacturers, Sonata II, Sephia and Prince were chosen and delivered in pressed form without engine, tires and doors, etc. Shredding line was substantially composed of pre- and main-shredder. cyclone, magnetic separation, eddy current separation and man-power separation. From the separation of shredder products, iron scrap was observed to be the major material of old car accounting for 60.1 % of total weight and non-ferrous metals involving Al, Cu and Zn, etc. were about 2%. Light fluff, about 90% of total fluff product, was comprised with plastic, fiber and sponge, etc. and the fraction of 5 cm undersize in light fluff was 70.5%. In case of heavy fluff, however. rubber and plastic were found to be the major constituent materials of it. Among the constituent materials of fluff, plastic showed the highest calorific value, more than 10,000 cal/gr and leather and rubber showed relatively high chlorine content, 10.3 and 2.55 wt%, respectively.

  • 전기 자동차 및 신재생에너지 시장 확대로 EV, HEV, LEV 등 전기자동차의 수요가 증가함에 따라 2020년을 기점으로 백만개 이상의 리튬-이온 폐배터리가 생성될 것으로 예상되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 폐배터리는 잔여용량이 80%수준에서 교체되고 있어서 화학적 분해를 통한 재활용 이전에 안정적인 에너지저장장치로서 재사용할 수 있는 가능성을 보유하고 있다. 본고에서는 향후 지속적으로 발생이 예상되는 전기자동차의 폐배터리를 이용하여 에너지저장장치를 구성하는 방법에 대하여 다양한 다양한 국내외 기관들의 기술 및 연구동향에 대해 알아보고, 이를 바탕으로 효율적인 에너지저장장치 구성방법과 이를 확산하기 위한 사업화 방안 등을 알아본다.

  • The quantity of passenger cars in industrial countries has been significantly increased in recent years. According to prognoses, this tendency is likely to continue in the forthcoming future. As a direct consequence, an increase of End-of Life-Vehicles (ELV) will confront us with the problem of "ELV-Recycling". In order to cope with this situation, the European regulation for the treatment of End-of-Life-Vehicles (09/2000) has been transferred to national law in Germany (ELV-Regulation from 1 July 2002). The long term aim is to reduce residues from the ELV-treatment to less than 5 wt% from 30 wt% within the next 10 years (2015). For that reason, there is a need for innovative and more efficient recycling techniques tailored to future materials in automobiles. The design process at automotive industry is continuously changing due to the strong demand on optional equipment and new technical solutions for fuel saving. Light materials, such as aluminum and plastics, consequently become more important and cause a decrease of ferrous metals. Since plastic materials are often used as compounds, a separation into initial material types by means of mechanical recycling methods is not possible. For that reason, efficient recycling can only be realized by introducing recycling-friendly car designs. In the end an integrated approach of auto makers and recycling industry is of decisive significance for the fulfillment of future regulations.

Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Waste Automotive Catalysts (자동차 폐촉매의 물리 화학적 특성)

  • The physico-chemical characteristics and the combustion activities of a waste automotive catalyst were carried out in this study. The physico-chemical characteristics of waste automotive catalyst was examined by EA(Elemental analysis), ICP-AES (Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrophotometer), and XRD(X-ray diffraction) analysis. Carbon deposit amount was higher in front brick than rear brick of catalyst, and increased with mileage. The content of Pt. Pd and Rh in waste automotive catalyst was different from the car manufacturing company. The combustion activities of waste automotive catalyst were investigated for acetaldehyde as a model VOC in a fixed bed reactor at atmospheric pressure. The catalytic activity of rear brick for acetaldehyde combustion was better than front brick of waste automotive catalyst. The catalytic activity of waste automotive catalyst for acetaldehyde combustion decreased with mileage. The linear relationship between catalytic activity and mileage was negative and has a very excellent correlation. Finally, the waste automotive catalyst has a good catalytic activity for acetaldehyde combustion. and can be used to control of small emission source.

  • Currently, the domestic recycle rate of ELV parts is about 3%. The reason of the row rate of it is due to that consumer can not obtain the needed ELV parts. In order to supply the good parts to consumer. the equipment of the ELV disassembly is required. This research is to developed the lifter for ELV disassembly by considering the references such as the disassembly tool and equipment of the domestic and foreign ELV disassembly company.

  • The statistics showed that about 1 billion automobiles were registered and about 40million ELVs occurred on the world in 2010. So all advanced countries including EU had plan to increase the ELVs recycling rate up to 95% of total by 2015. The Korean government also established a target for raising up to 95% of ELVs recycling rate according to 'Act on the Resource Circulation of Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Vehicles'. Before being satisfied with the requirement of recycling of ELVs however, the problem is issued on the scraps of plastic and non-ferrous metals which are now being abandoned and reclaimed with no adequate reuse. Therefore, as a part of preceding investigation on the present state of ELVs recycling in the world, this preliminary investigation study was carried out focusing on the state of EU's disposal and management regulations of ELVs and SLF/ASR including the world trend of disposal and management regulations of ELVs and SLF/ASR.

  • 자동차 폐차대수의 증가에 따른 폐차처리가 심각한 환경 유해 요인이 되고 있다. 국내 자동차 보유대수가 2003년 12월 현재 1,458만대에 이르렀고, 2003년 한해에 폐차되는 폐차대수는 55만대에 이르고 있어, 향후 몇 년 안에 매립지 부족, 환경위해 등의 문제가 심각하게 대두될 전망이다. 또한 EU에서는 2015년까지 재활용 95%를 목표로 단계적인 법제화를 실시하고 있으며 이러한 추세는 전 세계적으로 확산될 것으로 보여 이에 대한 대응이 필요하다.(중략)

  • Due to the exhaustion of resources and increasing concerns about the environment, reverse logistics has become a critical issue in recent years. We discuss the conventional logistics operations and the reverse logistics operations in the automotive industry. The traditional supply chain (TSC) and the reverse supply chain (RSC) models are developed to compare performance between two systems. In addition, results of the simulation models are discussed in respect to total costs, inventory levels and stock-outs to analyze the effects of introducing of reverse logistics system.
