  • In this study, the local displacement and moment characteristics of a plate stiffened with closed ribs are analyzed according to the dimensions of stiffened plates. The analyzed results of various stiffened plates under square distributed load show that the effect of the loading panel width to the local behavior is dominant but that of the next panel width is very small. And the local behavior of reference stiffened plates can be expressed by the angle between the plate and the rib, and that of other stiffened plates can be obtained by multiplying ratio functions of the loading panel width, plate thickness, rib thickness, rib height and next panel width and they give good results. Applying ratio functions to other loading sizes shows that the applicability of ratio functions except for the loading panel width is proved and the modified ratio functions of the loading panel width improve error ratios. Therefore, the local displacement and moments of a plate stiffened with closed ribs can easily achieve proper results regardless of the dimensions using ratio functions proposed in this study.

  • For engineers in the industry, this study considers a reliable and practical finite element modeling technique to estimate the behavior of closed thin-walled members with spot weldings. Dynamic and static experiments confirm that the technique - modeling the spot weldings with solid elements which have the adjusted rotational freedoms and fill the welding space - Yields satisfactory results. Numerical studies on the double hat-shaped members. adopting this modeling technique. show the effect of the spot welding Pitch and the spot welding location in the flange on the stiffness of the members Using the principal stiffness and newly proposed GSPI(global stiffness performance index), we also carefully examine how the spot welding curvature, and sectional shape, etc.. synthetically influence the stiffness of a real excavator pillar in the field.

  • With an aim of considering the warping restraint effect, the results of the comparative study for several cases on the correction of the warping functions for the theoretical analysis of composite thin-walled beams with chord wise asymmetric closed cross-sections are presented in this study. To solve this problem, it is necessary to correct the warping function so as to satisfy the warping equilibrium condition like 1) without moving the position of the pole, 2) with only modifying the shape function using the existing pole, and 3) with moving the position of the pole. The cross-sectional characteristics of the cases were compared with each other. Finally, the cases were compared in order to correct the warping functions. The case 2) was observed to be more speedy and simple in computation compared to others.

  • Most of the steel bridges in Korea are being currently designed by the allowable stress design method that uses the conventional deterministic factors of safety. However the limit state design based on the concept of probability, statistics and reliability engineering is becoming very popular as a global standard deign method, leading the rational and economic bridge design. As part of the fundamental research to establish the load and resistance factor design(LRFD) of steel bridges considering domestic environmental conditions and regional characteristics, an experimental design is conducted by applying AASHTO-LRFD specification especially to a steel closed-box girder, which occupies relatively a large portion of steel bridges in Korea. Throughout the experimental design according to various sectional changes, some of the issues to be considered in the LRFD design of a composite steel closed-box girder bridge are examined. In this process, an Excel-based design verification program is developed for easy computation and prevention of errors. Quantitative reliability levels of the bridge sections designed by LRFD are also estimated using a reliability analysis method, and compared with the target reliability indexes applied in the LRFD design to verify the validity of the procedure and methodology used in this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose an economic new type rib by applying plate stiffening methods of the corrugated plate and the honey-comb sandwich panel to the steel deck plate and comparing the new type rib with existing open and closed ribs. The trapezoidal corrugated type, ㄹ type, honey-comb type and ㅁ type ribs are considered as new type ribs and the moment and the steel volume are compared with that of open ribs and closed ribs. The results shows that the honey-comb type and ㅁ type ribs are good in aspects of economic feasibility and the ㅁ type is better than the honey-comb type. To make the ㅁ type rib applicable to the steel deck plate, the sensitivity analysis and parametric study are performed and the system to select the proper section under the particular stress condition is established. The closed rib of real bridges is compared with the ㅁ type rib of the proposed system and it is known that the new type rib is more economic. Therefore, more economic steel deck plates can be achieved by using the system proposed in this study for the plate stiffened with the new ㅁ type rib.

  • Even though the longitudinally stiffened laminated composite plates with closed section ribs should be an effective system for axially compressed members, the existing researches on the applications of closed-section ribs, especially for the laminated composite plates, are not sufficient. This study is aimed to examine the influence of the sectional stiffness of U-shaped ribs on the buckling modes and strengths of laminated composite plates. Applying the orthotropic plates with eight layers of the layup $[(0^{\circ})_4]_s$ and $[(0^{\circ}/90^{\circ})_2]_s$, 3-dimensional finite element models for the U-rib stiffened plates were setup by using ABAQUS and then a series of eigenvalue analyses were conducted. From the parametric studies, the minimum required ply thicknesses as well as the buckling strengths were presented for the analysis models. The buckling strengths were compared with the theoretical critical stress equation for simply supported plates based on the Classical laminated plate theory. This study will contribute to the future study for evaluating the minimum required stiffness and optimum design of U-rib stiffened plates.

  • A dynamic simulation and test of frame with thin walled closed section beams considering warping conditions have been performed. When a beam is subjected under torsional moment, the cross section will deform an warping as well as twist. For some thin-walled sections warping will be large, and accompanying warping restraint will induce axial and shear stresses and reduce the twist of beam which stiffens the beam in torsion. This paper presents that an warping restraint factor in finite element model effects the behavior of beam deformation and dynamic mode shape. The computer modelling of frame is discussed in linear beam element model and linear thin shell element model, also presents a correlation between computer predicted and actual experimental results for static deflection, natural frequencies and mode shapes of frame.

  • In this study, we investigate a design technology intended to radically increase the buckling strength of vertically curved panels. Recent studies proposed a buckling strength formula which properly reflects the effect on the local plate buckling strength of flat plates when they are stiffened by closed section ribs. Herein, we attempted to quantitatively evaluate this effect on curved panels and to reveal the correlations with the design parameters. The commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, was used to build a three dimensional numerical model and numerical parametric studies were conducted to evaluate the variation of the buckling strength. In the case of flat panels, the local buckling strength of stiffened curved panels increases proportionally with increasing rotational stiffness of the closed-section ribs. After attaining a limiting value, an obvious tendency was found that the local buckling strength of the stiffened curved panel would converge towards a fixed value when the panels are supported along both sides. The parametric studies performed using the influential design parameters confirmed that the estimated partially-restrained curved panel strength is well correlated with the proposed formula.

  • This paper proposes a new 'finite element for the vibration analysis of thin-walled beams of rectangular closed sections. To predict the dynamic behavior of the thin-walled beam accurately, warping and distortion deformations should be considered for the analysis. The motivation of the present development is that conventional beam elements cannot describe correctly deformations such as warping and lozenging which are not negligible in some situations. Several numerical examples are studied to confirm the validity of the present element.
