  • In this study, LIPCA-S2 actuator with a piezoelectric single crystal layer and a carbon/epoxy layer was designed and evaluated to increase actuation performance of piezo-composite unimorph actuator. A curvature change model generated by the induced strain of a piezoelectric layer was used to predict the tip displacement of the piezo-composite unimorph cantilever. However, we found that there was big difference between the predicted and the measured tip displacement of LIPCA-S2 cantilever actuator when we used the previous linear prediction model. A new prediction model considering the change of piezoelectric strain coefficient and elastic modulus for the compression stress variation of the PMN-29PT single crystal layer was used and it was found that the difference between the predicted and the measured tip displacement reduced considerably.

  • The objective of this study is to examine fatigue behavior of as-welded butt-welded joints with incomplete penetration from fatigue tests. The test results are the following. In static tests, tensile strength and yield strength of butt-welded joints are constant regardless of incomplete penetration. And in fatigue tests, fatigue strength of fully penetrated butt-welded joints satisfies fatigue limits, prescribed in Korean Specifications and JSSC, respectively. The results show that as the magnitude of incomplete penetration increases, fatigue strength decreases. In fractured surfaces, full and incomplete penetration specimen show different shapes, it is because that stress concentration factor vary with structural geometry in bead toe and root tip, and certify in FEM analysis. This study suggests that defects such as incomplete penetration from welding must be avoided in order to attain the sufficient life of steel structures.

  • In this paper, the FEM result has been presented for a sealing safety between a valve packing and a valve seat during a open and close operation in a LPG cylinder. The sealing operation of a LPG valve is completed when the valve packing in which is made by a nylon-66 polymer is to stop a LP gas flow, which flows out from the outlet of a brass pipe in a LPG cylinder. The contact sealing mechanism of the valve may be classified by a flat contact of an unused valve packing and a circular groove contact of an used valve packing in a current LPG valve. Based on the FEM and experimental investigations the sealing force, 4.9 MPa for a flat contact mode of the unused valve packing is a little high compared to that of the used valve packing, which shows a circular groove contact geometry against a valve seat. But these sealing pressures for two contact modes are very low compared to the ultimate strenath 83 MPa of the nylon-66 and this may be designed with a excess strength of the valve.

  • The wall system that is composed only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs is adopted on many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed. In the apartment buildings, a shear wall may have one or mote openings for functional reasons. Many researches on the analysis of shear wall with openings were performed. But, some restrictions prevent those research results being applied to practical analysis and design procedure. It is necessary to use subdivided finite elements lot accurate analysis of the wall system with openings. But it would cost tremendous amount of analysis time and computer memory if the entire building structure is subdivided into a finer mesh. An efficient analysis method which can be used regardless of the number, size and location of openings is proposed in this study. The analysis method uses super element, matrix condensation technique and fictitious beam technique. Analyses of example structures having various types of openings were performed to verify the efficiency of proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed method have outstanding accuracy with drastically reduced time and computer memory from the analyses of example structures.

  • The stress triaxiality and lode angle are known to be most dominant fracture parameters in ductile materials. This paper proposes a three-dimensional failure strain surface for a ductile steel, called a low-temperature high-tensile steel (EH36), using average stress triaxiality and average normalized lode parameter, along with briefly introducing their theoretical background. It is an extension of previous works by Choung et al. (2011; 2012; 2014a; 2014b) and Choung and Nam (2013), in which a two-dimensional failure strain locus was presented. A series of tests for specially designed specimens that were expected to fail in the shear mode, shear-tension mode, and compression mode was conducted to develop a three-dimensional fracture surface covering wide ranges for the two parameters. This paper discusses the test procedures for three different tests in detail. The tensile force versus stroke data are presented as the results of these tests and will be used for the verification of numerical simulations and fracture identifications in Part II.

  • The research intended to understand the lateral behavior in core and offset outrigger system. To achieve this goal, a structural analysis and design of 70 stories building was carried out by making use of MIDAS-Gen. And the primary parameters of this analysis were the stiffness of outrigger and the location of outrigger in plan. On the basis of the analysis results, we analyzed the lateral behavior of structural elements such as slab, outrigger and exterior columns in core and offset outrigger. In this analysis research, it is indicated that the stiffness of outrigger and the outrigger location in plan had an any impact on lateral behavior in outrigger system of tall building. Specially, slab stresses in core outrigger system were highly distributed in the slab near the outrigger system to connect shear walls and exterior columns while slab stresses in offset outrigger system were highly distributed in the slab between the outrigger system and shear walls. Also the study results can be of significant help to obtaining the engineering data for the reasonable structure design of the high-rise outrigger system.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distributions in the surrounding tissues of the teeth seated by indirect retainers in three different teeth of unilateral distal extension partial denture when the dislodging forces were applied on denture bases. Three dimensional photoelastic models were made. The teeth on which indirect retainers were seated were mandibular left lateral incisor (Model I), canine (Model II), and first premolar (Model III). The dislodging force with 860mg at $45^{\circ}$ angulation to occlusal plane was applied to each model. Three dimensional photoelastic stress analysis was done, and the records were diagramed and analysed. The results were as follows : The compressive stresses were shown the most on neck portions of buccal, mesial, and distal sides in all three models. Slight tensile stresses were shown on neck portions of lingual sides in all three models. The compressive stresses on buccal side were shown in strength in such order as model I, model II, and model III. The compressive stresses were shown on neck portion of mesial and distal sides of model I and mode II, with model I more than Model II. The compressive stresses were shown only on neck portion of mesial side on Model III. The general overall magnitude of compressive stresses were shown in strength in such order as Model I, Model II, and Model III.

  • An SGBEM (symmetric Galerkin boundary element method)-FEM alternating method has been proposed by Nikishkov, Park and Atluri. This method can be used to obtain mixed-mode stress intensity factors for planar and nonplanar three-dimensional cracks having an arbitrary shape. For field applications, however, it is necessary to verify the accuracy and consistency of this method. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the effects of several factors on the accuracy of the stress intensity factors obtained using the abovementioned alternating method. The obtained stress intensity factors are compared with the known values provided in handbooks, especially in the case of internal and external circumferential semi-elliptical surface cracks. The results show that the SGBEM-FEM alternating method yields accurate stress intensity factors for three-dimensional cracks, including internal and external circumferential surface cracks and that the method can be used as a robust crack analysis tool for solving field problems.

  • When the underwater structure sails high speed, noise and vibration propagate to the sensor in the nose of the dome. In this paper, to avoid this kind of noise and vibration CRP(Carbon Reinforced Plastic) material and SNORE ring(Self-NOise REduction Ring) are attached at the curved structure and simulates its isolation characteristics using commercial software. Vibration displacement and stress are calculated at the planar sensor array. The material of the curved structure is aluminum and maximum outer diameter is 53Omm, 215mm in length, 270mm in planar diameter, respectively. Based on the simulation results, reduction ratio of the received normal stress at the sensor is above 95% at the frequency of 12kHz and 15kHz. At the mid point of the planar sensor the normal stress is higher than 20mm and 40mm apart. This results can be used to increase the sensitivity of the acoustic sensor as a basic data.

  • A finite element method has been developed to study the material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrte structures. Concrete behavior under the biaxial state of stress is represented by a nonlinear constitutive relationship which incorporates tensile cracking, tensile stiffening effect between cracks and the strain-softening phenomenon beyond the maximum compressive strength. The concrete model used is based upon nonlinear elasticity by assuming concrete to be an orthotropic material and modeled as equivalent uniaxial stress-strain constitutive relationship using equivalent uniaxial strain. The streel reinforcement is assumed to be in a uniaxial stress state and is modeled as a bilinear, elasto-plastic material with strain hardening approximating the Bauschinger effect. In plane stress state, R.C. beams is modeled as a quadratic element that has two degrees of freedom in each node. And this results of finite element analysis are compared with the experimential results of midspan deflection, stresses and strains.
