The Low Temperature Thermal Desorption (LTTD) System equipped with a soil transfer unit, a rotary kiln, RTO, cyclones and a bag filter etc. was developed. The LTTD system was designed to be economically operated using LPG as a fuel and recirculating the discharged gas from the LTTD system through RTO. For the performance test of LTTD system the soil contaminated with light and heavy oils (2,690 mg TPH/kg soil) and with particle sizes below 50 mm was fed into the rotary kiln of LTTD system at 7$m^3$/hr with retention time of 15 minutes. Operation temperatures of LTTD system for the removal of soil TPH were $567^{\circ}C$ and $692^{\circ}C$. The residual TPH after treatment was 46 mg/kg and 32mg/kg respectively at each temperature condition, which shows high TPH removal efficiencies of the developed LTTD as 98.3% and 98.9%.

Tree box filters, an example of bioretention systems, were compacted and versatile urban stormwater low impact development technique which allowed volume and water quality treatment performance to be adjusted based on the hydrologic, runoff quality and catchment characteristics. In this study, the overall performance of a 6 year-old tree box filter receiving parking lot stormwater runoff was evaluated. Hydrologic and hydraulic factors affecting the treatment performance of the tree box filter were also identified and investigated. Based on the results, the increase in rainfall depth caused a decrease in hydrologic and hydraulic performance of the tree box filter including volume, average flow, and peak flow reduction (r = -0.53 to -0.59; p<0.01). TSS, organics, nutrients, and total and soluble heavy metals constituents were significantly reduced by the system through media filtration, adsorption, infiltration, and evapotranspiration mechanisms employed in the tree box filter (p<0.001). This significant pollutant reduction by the tree box filter was also found to have been caused by hydrologic and hydraulic factors including volume, average flow, peak flow, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and runoff duration. These findings were especially useful in applying similarly designed tree box filter by considering tree box filter surface area to catchment area of less than 1 %.
Background: Selection of reconstruction route in esophageal cancer surgery is based on the patient's status, characteristics of tumor, surgeon's preference and experience. Of the various routes, it has been documented that subcutaneous or substernal route may prolong operation time and may be vulnerable to postoperative respiratory complications. This study was designed to evaluate whether the selection of reconstruction route affects the surgical outcomes. Material and Method: Of 131 patients who have undergone resection and reconstruction for esophageal cancer, posterior mediastinal route(Group I, n=34), substernal route (Group II, n=31), and subcutaneous route(Group III, n=21) were retrospectively reviewed in 86 patients. Results of early operations and morbidities were compared between the groups. Result: There was a male prevalence(79 of males vs. 7 of females). There were 81 squamous cell cancers and 5 adenocarcinomas. There were no differences between groups in weight, height, age, cancer staging and location, and in the preoperative anesthetic risk evaluation and pulmonary function test(p=NS). Postoperative mechanical ventilation time was longer in Group I(20.6 hours) than in Group II(7.8 hours) or III(3.4 hours)(p=0.005). Duration of stay in the intensive care unit was prolonged in Group III(6.4 days) compared to Group I (3.9 days) or II(3.1 days)(p=0.043). No differences were noted in the duration of hospital stay between the groups(p=NS). Blood transfusion was needed in 30 out of 34 patients in Group I compared to 14/31 in Group II or 15/21 in Group III(p=0.001). The mean amount of transfusion for each patient was also higher in Group I(3,833 mL) than in Group II(1535 mL) or Group III(1419 mL)(p=0.04), but there was no difference in the inreoperation due to bleeding. Ea ly mortality rate was substantially higher in Group I(17.6%) but the differences between the groups were insignificant(p=NS). Although sepsis was a more prevalent cause of death in Group I, it was not related to anastomotic leak. Other morbidities did not differ between the groups(p=NS). Conclusion: In above results show that the reconstruction route does not affect the outcome of esophageal cancer surgery. We believe that the selection of reconstruction route can be based on the surgeon's preference and experience.
Background: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery has emerged as a new approach to the conventional median sternotomy. The suggested advantages of the minimally invasive technique includes improved cosmesis, simplicity of opening and closing the chest, less postoperative pain, less risk of infection and bleeding, early rehabilitation, and reduced length of hospital stay. Material and Method: Between March 1997 and December 1997, we performed 36 cases of minimally invasive cardiac surgery via three different approaches ; right paramedian, transverse sternotomy and mini-sternotomy with upper sternal split. Result: There was no operative mortality. Postoperative complications were atrial fibrillation in 4 patients, bleeding that required reoperation in 1 patient, and delayed wound closure in 1 patient who underwent 3rd redo operation. Average length of skin incision was 9.1${\pm}$0.9 cm. Average duration of stay in the intensive care unit was 48${\pm}$29 hours and the patients were discharged 10${\pm}$7 days after the operation. Conclusion: In spite of the difficulties in defibrillation, deairing, and cardiac decompensation, minimally invasive approaches will be applied increasingly because of the suggested advantages.

Distributions and budgets of nitrogen and phosphorus in inner and central areas of Hiroshima bay were investigated for three years from January 1991 to December 1993. The mean loadings of nitrogen and phosphorus Stowed into the entire bay were 870 tonN/month and 129 tonP/month, respectively. About 79 % of nitrogen and 84 % of phosphorus loadings were flowed into the inner area. The TN:TP and DIN:DIP atomic ratios of the discharged freshwater were about 15 and 21, respectively. The PON:POP and DIN:DIP atomic ratios of seawater in the bay varied from 8 to 14 with a mean value of 11, and from 8 to 18 with a mean value of 12, respectively. Estimated fluxes of nitrogen and phosphorus based on the exchange of seawater were 585 tonN/month and 106 tonP/month, respectively, from the inner area to the central area, whereas those fluxes were 62 tonN/month and 107 tonP/month, respectively, from the central area to Akinada. When the remainders of nitrogen and phosphorus substracted outflows from inflows should be sunk, sink fluxes of nitrogen and phosphorus per surface area of the entire bay would be about 9.83 gN/m²ㆍyr and 0.27 gP/m²ㆍyr, respectively. In the central area, the remainders of nitrogen and phosphorus were greater than those in inner area. The residence times of nitrogen and phosphorus were estimated to be about 112 days, respectively, in the entire of Hiroshima Bay.
Nano-sized mullite (3Al$_2$O$_3$$.$2SiO$_2$) colloids were prepared by use of the spray combustion method. For combustion reaction, Al(NO$_3$)$_3$$.$9$H_2O$, and CH$_{6}$N$_4$O were used as an oxidizer and a fuel respectively, and then colloidal silica was also added as 2SiO$_2$source for mullite. The temperature of the reaction chamber was kept at 80$0^{\circ}C$ to initiate the ignition of droplets of the mixed precursors. For preventing droplet coagulation, the droplet number concentration was reduced using the metal screen filter, and the residence time of aerosol was kept at 2.5 seconds for laminar flow. The synthesized colloidal particles had an uniform spherical shape with 130 nanometer size and the crystalline phase showed the mullite with stoichiometry in the observations of XRD and TEM.
Simulation of preparative protein chromatography becomes necessary for separation as well as optimal operation. A mathematical model describing the behavior of elution peaks in preparative protein chromatography for single and binary component separation was solved numerically using a PDEsolver Macsyma$^{\circledR}$(Macsyma Inc., Arlington, MA, U.S.A.). Band profiles were calculated with the equilibrium-dispersive model of chromatography. The effects of the sample volume, concentrations of solutes in the sample, flow velocity and column length on the band profile of the elution peaks are discussed. The results in this paper suggest the model simulation for the binary mixture can be extended to multicomponent separations.
This article presents a multi-scale simulation approach starting from the molecular level for the adsorption process development, specifically, in n-hexane adsorption on activated carbon. A grand canonical Monte-Carlo(GCMC) method is used for the prediction of adsorption isotherms of n-hexane on activated carbon at the molecular level. Geometric effects and hydrodynamic properties of the adsorption column are examined by means of the two dimensional CFD(computational fluid dynamics) simulation. The adsorption isotherms from the molecular simulation and the axial diffusivity from the CFD simulation are exploited for the process simulation where the elution curve of n-hexane is obtained. For the first moment(mean residence time) of the pulse-response with respect to temperature and flowrate, the process simulation results obtained from this three-steps multiscale simulation approach show a good agreement with experimental data within 20% of maximum difference. The multi-scale simulation approach addressed in this study will be useful to accelerate the adsorption process development, while reducing the number of experiments required.
Nano-sized ZnO colloids were prepared by use of spray combustion method. for combustion reaction, $Zn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and $CH_6N_4O$ were employed as an oxidizer and a fuel. Exothermic peak was shown at $230^{\circ}C$ by DTA/TGA, and it was considered as a combustion reaction followed by ignition of the precursor mixture. In case of spray combustion method, because insufficient contents of molecules and radicals generated from precursor droplets may lead an incomplete igmition, the ignition temperature of combustion chamber was chosen at $500^{\circ}C$. For diminishing aerosol coagulation, the droplet number concentration was reduced by filter media. The fluid was laminar with 2.5 seconds of aerosol residence time. The synthesized colloids had spherical shape with 180 nanometer size, and the crystalline phase was ZnO with hexagonal structure.
This study has attempted to explore the audience's visual attention about the subtitles types of CATV entertainment program. To achieve this, this research has measured the dwell time and average fixation data through the eye-tracking test and analysed the reason of particular visual attention by in-depth interview. According to the eye-tracking research findings, four types of subtitles(character metaphor, character metonymy, event metaphor, event metonymy) were measured the highest dwell time and average fixation time. Also, according to in-depth interview, visual attention was clearly turned up that event metonymy constructs the conflicts between characters and overstates the trip place romantically. This results means that staffs of intensify the reality and visual pleasure through event metonymic subtitles.
