Effects of Muscle Fatigue through Maximum Contraction during Flexion and Extension of Knee Before and After Isometric Trunk Exercise on Elderly Hansen's Disease (한센노인의 체간운동이 슬관절 굽힘·폄 동작의 최대수축 시 근피로도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to investigate the change of muscle fatigue through maximum contraction during flexion and extension of knee joint before and after the isometric trunk exercise was implemented on elderly Hansen's disease. 18 subjects exercised for 60 minutes twice a week for 12 weeks. The subjects were divided into normal sensory group, group with sensory loss in left sole, group with sensory loss in right sole, and group with sensory loss in both soles, according to the sensory condition on their soles. We obtained following results. Muscle fatigue in normal sensory group, there were significant differences in left right hamstring, left rectus femoris(p<.05), in group with sensory loss in left sole, there were significant differences in left right hamstring(p<.05), in group with sensory loss in right sole, there were significant differences in left right hamstring, right rectus femoris and group with sensory loss in both sole, there were significant differences in right hamstring(p<.05). The differences of muscle fatigue according to the sensory condition on their soles, there were significant differences in left hamstring between normal sensory group and group with sensory loss in both sole(p<.05).

The Effect of Muscle performance on knee flexion / extension by chin in exercise (턱 당김 운동이 무릎 굽힘폄의 근 수행력에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The purpose of the present study is to report the effect of muscle performance on knee flexion and extension by chin in exercise. Methods: This study was Participated in 10 healthy subjects. For conducting the chin-in exercise, subjects are lay down with supine position. Using the rounded towel, subjects was performed contraction of longus colli and longus capatis muscle by push the towel. Chin-in exercise was conducted 3 times a day, 4 times a week for 4 weeks. By using the Biodex system4, We measured absolute muscle strength, relative muscle strength, total exercise quantity and average rate of production in knee flexion and extension. The data was analyzed by the repeated-measure ANOVA for comparing before, after exercise 2 weeks, after exercise 4 weeks changes of factors. Results: After chin-in exercise, there was significant difference of before, after 2 weeks and 4weeks results in absolute muscle strength, relative muscle strength, total exercise quantity, average rate of production, agonist/antagonist ratio(p<.05). Conclusion: As a results of this study, chin-in exercise may help to improve muscle ability of knee joint activation and knee joint action performance.

  • In this paper, we discuss the abnormalities of flexion and extension in elbow disease in general. Flexion and extension represent arm flexion and extension while being set to 90 degrees. In this case, the angle of the arm is remarkably small, or the pain is accompanied by an abnormality in the elbow. We tested 100 elbow flexions and extensions at the age of 50 and calculated the number of people in each case. After that, patients with abnormalities in flexion and extension were classified and their treatment methods were presented. In this paper, we have developed a system for treating musculoskeletal disorders.

Analysis of Activation and Contribution of Muscles of the Elderly During Arm Flexion and Extension Resistance Exercise with Increased Load (노인의 팔 굽힘/폄 저항 운동 시 하중 증가에 따른 근육의 활성도 및 기여도 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to assess activation and contribution of muscles of the elderly according to increased loading during the arm flexion extension resistance exercise. Surface electromyographic signals were acquired from biceps brachii, triceps brachii, deltoid posterior, pectoralis major and latissimmus dorsi to determine the difference of the activation of specific muscles between the elderly and young. Five elderly and five young males with no musculoskeletal disease volunteered for the study. Electromyographic activities in the muscles were measured during resistance exercise and normalized to the maximum EMG activity recorded in the maximal voluntary static contraction (MVC). Against the increased loading during arm flexion/extension resistance exercises, the young uses muscles evenly but the elderly uses one specific muscle frequently. Contribution of triceps brachii during extension and deltoid posterior during flexion was principal in the elderly.

  • Background: Chronic neck pain (CNP) is associated with weakness in the deep neck flexor muscles, a shortening of the neck extensors, and a reduction in endurance. In addition, muscle imbalance can lead to neck pain and musculoskeletal dysfunction. This study compared neck extensor muscle fatigue, muscle strength, and muscle endurance time between patients with CNP and healthy adults during isometric neck extension. Methods: Thirty participants (15 patients with CNP and 15 healthy adults) were recruited in this research. The outcome measures included splenius capitis (SC) muscle fatigue, isometric neck extensor strength, and muscle endurance. The independent T-test was used to compare the continuous dependent variables between the CNP group and the healthy group. Results: The independent T-test indicated that muscle fatigue in the left SC differed significantly between the CNP group and the healthy group. A significant difference was also noted in the isometric neck extensor and neck extensor strength between the groups. Conclusion: Our results provided promising clinical evidence that patients with CLP have reduced neck extensor strength and endurance and increased SC muscle fatigue, which results in neck pain.

The Effect of Arm Extension Patterns of PNF on Muscle Activity of Opposite Lower Extremity (고유수용성신경근촉진법의 팔 폄 패턴이 반대편 다리의 근활성도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the arm extension pattern of proprioceptive exercise program on the muscle activity of the opposite lower extremity. Methods: In this study, electromyogram MP150(Biopac system, USA) was applied to 20 healthy male subjects. Arm extension-adduction-internal rotation pattern was applied within initial, mid and end range in sling position and supine position for measurement. And the effect on the activity of rectus femoris and tibialis anterior muscle of the opposite lower extremity was compared and analyzed. Results: The results of this study were summarized as follows: First, there was a statistically significant difference of the activity of the tibialis anterior muscle within the Initial range in sling position and supine position(P<0.05). Second, there was a statistically significant difference of the activity of the tibialis anterior muscle within the end range in sling position and supine position(P<0.05). Conclusion: Rectus femoris and tibialis anterior muscles shows the higher activity in the supine position than in the sling position. Therefore, the supine position is more appropriate than the sling position to make irradiation on lower extremity muscle with the extension pattern.

The Effect of Different Elastic Tape Expansibilities on the Onset Time of Muscle Contraction during Neck Extension for Forward Head Posture Syndrome (목 폄 시 탄력성 테이프의 신장력 차이가 전방머리자세 증후군의 근수축 개시시간에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: Thisstudy aimed to identify the effect of varying the expansibility of elastic tape on the onset time of muscle contraction during neck extension for forward head posture syndrome. Methods: Forty-five young adults with forward head posture syndrome volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to one of three groups according to the expansibility of the elastic tape (25%, 50%, 75%). The onset time of muscle contraction for the neck extensor during neck extension was measured using an electromyographic system (Free EMG, BTS, Italy). Multivariate analysis of variance was employed to determine the effect of different expansibilities of elastic tape on the onset time of muscle contraction during neck extension for forward head posture syndrome. When there was a statistically significant difference by MANOVA, Scheffe was used as a post-hoc test. The level of significance was set at α=0.05. Results: In the comparison of the onset time of muscle contraction of varying elastic tape expansibilities and measurement times, there was a significant difference between the groups (Lt. UT, Lt. SCM, Rt. SCM) (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference in the interaction between the measurement time and the group, between the measurement time (p > 0.05). Conclusion: In the neck extension, 75% of the tape extensibility in the Lt. UT and both SCM shortened the muscle contraction onset time.

Knee extension test for assessing hamstring flexibility (넓적다리뒤근육의 유연성 측정을 위한 무릎폄 검사)

  • Hamstring flexibility is an important factor that affects muscle performance of the lower extremities and is closely associated with sports injuries. Therefore, evaluation of flexibility is important in clinical practice. Results of evaluation are determined by types of tests and cut-off values used; therefore, accurate and detailed understanding of these is necessary before examination. Although the straight leg raise and sit and reach tests are used to evaluate hamstring extensibility, structures including the nerves, fascia, and other muscles can significantly confound the results of these tests. The knee extension test is performed at 90° of hip flexion to minimize the posterior pelvic tilt that occurs during the straight leg test. The knee extension test is most recommended for selective evaluation of hamstring flexibility. The knee extension test is classified into active and passive tests. The cut-off value is usually set at 20° for the active and at 10° for the passive knee extension test. Although a strong association is observed between the two tests, the active knee extension test is preferred in clinical practice because it can be performed by a single examiner, which serves as an advantage. Age, sex, and warm-up exercise tend to affect flexibility; therefore, results should be interpreted with caution. Detailed understanding of each flexibility test is important for reliable evaluation.

The Immediate Effect of Hip Flexor Stretching with Pelvic Fixation on Hip Extension Flexibility and Gait Parameters in Subjects with Unilateral Hip flexor Shortness (골반 고정을 동반한 엉덩관절 굽힘근 스트레칭이 일측성 엉덩관절 굽힘근 단축이 있는 일반 성인의 엉덩관절 폄 유연성과 보행 매개변수에 미치는 즉각적인 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of hip flexor stretching with pelvic fixation on the flexibility of hip extension and gait capacity in subjects with limited hip extension flexibility. Methods: Twenty-six subjects with limited hip extension flexibility were divided into two groups: a hip flexor stretching with pelvic fixation group (n = 13) and a hip flexor stretching without pelvic fixation group (n = 13). The subjects were assessed based on flexibility of hip extension, stride, and gait velocity after applying hip flexor stretching. Results: The hip flexor stretching with pelvic fixation group showed significantly improved flexibility of hip extension, stride, and gait velocity compared with hip flexor stretching without pelvic fixation group (p <0.05). The flexibility of hip extension was significantly improved after application of hip flexor stretching in both groups; however, stride and gait velocity were significantly improved only in the hip flexor stretching with pelvic fixation group. Conclusion: Hip flexor stretching with pelvic fixation is an effective intervention for improving the flexibility of hip extension and gait capacity.

Effects of Combined Extension Exercises for the Cervical and Thoracic Spine on the Activity of Erector Spinae Muscles (목뼈와 등뼈 폄 복합운동이 척주세움근 근활성도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of new exercises (combined cervical and thoracic extension exercises) with those of conventional cervical extensor strengthening exercises (sitting cervical extension exercises) and thoracic extensor strengthening exercises (prone thoracic extension exercises). Method: Fifteen healthy subjects performed sitting cervical extension exercises, prone thoracic extension exercises, and combined cervical and thoracic extension exercises. During each exercise, electromyography was used to measure muscle activity in the erector spinae with C4 and T4 levels. The measured data were analyzed using one-way repeated analysis of variance. Results: With different exercises, there were significant differences in activity in the erector spinae muscle (p < 0.05). The activity in the erector spinae muscle increased significantly during the combined cervical and thoracic extension exercises compared to the sitting cervical extension (p < 0.05) and prone thoracic extension exercises (p < 0.05). The sitting cervical extension exercises significantly increased activity in the cervical erector spinae muscle compared to the prone thoracic extension exercises (p < 0.05). Activity in the thoracic erector spinae muscles was significantly increased during the prone thoracic extension exercises compared to during the sitting cervical extension exercises (p < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that the newer exercises effectively increase activity in the cervical and thoracic extensor muscles.
