이 논문은 $\ulcorner$독립신문$\lrcorner$의 편집에 어떠한 인물들이 참여하였는가를 규명해 보려는 것이다. 이 문제에 대해서는 그동안 학계의 논의가 매우 부족한 가운데 서재필 자서전 등의 단편적이고 일방적인 기록에 의해 서재필 중심으로 해석하는 경향이 지배적이었다. 이 논문에서는 지금까지의 연구 성과와 밝혀진 자료들을 종합하고 재해석하며 일부 새로운 자료들을 토대로 해서 이 문제에 체계적인 접근을 시도해 보았다. 본 연구에서 사용하게 될 새로운 자료는 서재필의 중추원 고문 계약과 관련된 문서, 선교사 헐버트의 참여와 관련된 그의 서한들, 그리고 아펜젤러의 역할을 언급한 서재필의 편지 등이다. 본 연구의 결과 독립신문에 참여했던 것으로 밝혀진 인물은 서재필, 주시경, 윤치호, 헐버트, 손승용, 이준일, 아펜젤러, 엠벌리, 콥 총 9명이었다. 서재필을 포함한 한국인이 5명이고 외국인이 4명이었다. 이중 사장이나 주필의 역할을 맡았던 사람은 시간적 순서대로 서재필, 윤치호, 아펜젤러, 엠벌리이다. 그밖에 주시경과 손승용이 초창기부터 편집에 참여했으며 헐버트는 영문판 편집일을 초창기 몇 달간 맡았었다. 이들 중 손승용이 유일하게 창간부터 폐간까지 계속 참여했던 인물인 것으로 보인다. 이준일은 회계 업무를 맡았으며 콥은 일시적으로 교정 등의 업무를 도와주었다. 이들 중 헐버트와 콥은 정식 직원은 아니었다. 헐버트는 비공식적인 계약에 의해 초창기에 잠시 참여하였고 콥은 일시적으로 교정을 도와준 인물이다.

이상에서 고찰하였듯이 현재까지는 어느 하나로 결정할 만한 선별 검사 방법이 없지만, 그 중에서 경질 초음파 검사와 color-flow Doppler 초음파 검사가 시행하기가 쉬우면서 민감하고 비교적 특이도가 높은 방법이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 역학적인 면에서 조기 진단 혹은 선별 검사의 효율은 검사의 시행과 그에 따른 처치에 의해 사망률이 실제로 감소되었을 때 유의하다고 할 수 있으며, 이런 면에서 아직까지 난소암으로 인한 사망률을 감소시킬 만한 결정적인 선별 검사 방법은 알려져 있지 않다. 사망률이 1/3 감소되었음을 확인하는데 100,000명의 선별 검사자와 100,000명의 대조군이 필요하므로 앞으로 보다 많은 인구를 대상으로 한 역학적인 연구가 필요하다. 앞으로의 선별 검사에는 보다 특이도가 높은 종양 표지 물질의 개발, 초음파를 비롯한 진단 기기의 혁신적인 발달이 필요하며 이는 현재까지의 발전 상황으로 보아 실제로 가능할 것으로 생각된다. 이와 더불어 돌연변이를 일으킨 난소 상피 세포가 수 차례의 분열만 일으키더라도 그 유전자 산물을 검색해 낼 수 있고, 나아가서는 DNA 진단까지 가능한 분자 생물학적 혹은 세포 유전학전 진단 방법의 개발과 이용도 기대된다.

Adenomyosis is a common disease of middle-aged women and adenomyoma is a variety of adenomyosis that formed localized tumor. Cystic degeneration of an adenomyoma is a rare clinical manifestation. A 30-year-old parous woman suffered from severe dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia for about 5 months, was operated under the impression of endometriosis of the pelvis. Following the operation, cystic degeneration of an adenomyoma was found incidentally. The authors experienced a case of adenomyosis that formed cystic tumor of uterus and presented with a pertinent literatures.

1980년 설치 이후 환경부는 환경정책과 환경관리에 대한 주요 업무 중의 하나로 자연환경의 보전에 주안점을 두고 있다. 또한 자연환경보전법에 의거하여 환경부는 자연환경상태에 대한 전국 단위의 자연환경조사를 실시하고 있다. 제1차 전국자연환경조사는 이미 1986-1990년에 실시하였고, 현재 교수 및 연구진의 참여 하에 제2차 전국자연환경조사(1997-2002)ff 실시하고 있다. 제2차 조사에서는 지형경관에 대한 조사가 포함되어 모든 종류의 지질 및 지형환경에 대한 조사가 이루어진다. 예를 들면 호수와 습지, 해안, 하천, 산지. 평야, 주빙하지형, 화산, 카르스트 및 구조지형 등이다. 조사지역은 육지 206개 소권역, 해안 145개 지점으로 나누고 6년에 걸쳐 매년 약 30개의 팀이 이 프로젝트에 참여하고 있다. 조사결과는 “지형경관도”로 편집, 인쇄될 예정이며 현존식생도, 동식물분포도와 함께 생태자연도로 작성될 예정이다. 제2차 조사에서 얻어진 방대한 양의 환경정보를 합리적이고 효율적으로 이용하기 위해서 환경부는 한경관리를 위한 이용과 응용에 환경정보시스템을 구축하고 있다.

Leiomyomas are common in the myometrial layer of the uterus, though they are rarely found in other reproductive organs. Leiomyomas are benign, hormone-sensitive smooth muscle tumors. They develop during the reproductive years and regress after menopause. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult to make. We present a case of a 54-year-old woman with a vaginal wall tumor. The management in this case included surgical excision. Histologic examination definitively confirmed the diagnosis of a vaginal leiomyoma. We report the details of this case along with a brief review of the literature.

Central anticholinergic syndrome occurs when an anticholinergic substance works in vivo or as a result of the insufficient release of acetylcholine. Its symptoms include confusion, agitation, behavioral change, hallucination, blurred vision, and dysarthria. Occasionally, these symptoms occur with the use of a scopolamine patch. A 54-year-old female complained of behavioral change and confused mentality. She attached a scopolamine patch at the postauricular area in the morning of the day before her hospital visit. Neurological examination revealed bilateral symmetric mydriasis without light reflex. The brain MRI was normal, and electroencephalography showed nonspecific abnormalities. The patient recovered completely after the removal of the scopolamine patch.

Hypoglycemic encephalopathy is a rare problem among diabetic patients who are receiving treatment with insulin or other glucose-lowering drugs. The MRIs of patients with hypoglycemic encephalopathy commonly show scattered lesions in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus and basal ganglia, but lesions in the cerebellum or brain stem are extremely rare. A 44-year-old alcoholic woman without diabetes was admitted with a semicomatose mentality and seizure with severe hypoglycemic encephalopathy with extensive brain lesions seen on MRI at the middle cerebellar peduncle and midbrain, as well as in the other brain areas.

Isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy is a rare clinical condition and it causes deviation of the tongue and dysarthria. A 50-year-old female presented with tongue deviation to the left and mild dysarthria. She had no remarkable past medical history except several recent upper respiratory infections. On examination, the other cranial nerves were intact and she had no focal neurological signs. The findings of MRI and MR angiography were normal. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed only mild elevation of protein. We diagnosed her as suffering with idiopathic isolated hypoglossal nerver palsy and we administered steroid therapy. The dysarthria was improved, but the tongue deviation still remained at 50 days after onset. We report here on a rare case of idiopathic isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy.
