Mechanism of Orientation of Liquid Crystal Molecules for Polarized UV-exposed Polyimide Alignment Layers (폴리애미드 배향막의 편광 자외선 조사에 따른 액정 배향 메카니즘)

  • We studied the mechanism of orientation of polyimide molecules which were irradiated by polarized UU (PUV) using polarized Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, According to the measured UV spectra, we found PI films mainly absorb UV light less than 350 nm wavelength, therefore, UV light less than 360 nm induces photochemical reaction of PI. PUV irradiation of PI films caused decrease of all peak intensities in the FT-IR spectra. except the newly formed broad peak at $3244 cm^{-1}$, due to degradation of the PI molecules. The remaining PI molecules after photo-degradation showed predominantly perpendicular molecular orientation to the irradiated PUV polarization direction, due to the preferential degradation of PI molecules parallel to irradiated PUV polarization direction. However the rubbing of PI films induced reorientation of the PI molecules parallel to the rubbing direction. We also investigated the alignment of the liquid crystal by rubbing or PUV irradiation. Liquid crystals align perpendicular to the PUV polarization direction and parallel to the rubbing direction.

  • Pressurized high temperature plastic resin flows into the cavity of mold and is solidified in injection molding process. Residual stress is being developed in injection molded part because of high temperature variations and high pressure. Developed residual stress relaxes as time goes. Consequently this makes part deformed and deteriorates quality of product. A measurement method of residual stress for injection molded transparent articles has been investigated using photoelasticity. Light, a composite of electromagnetic waves, is purified into a single wave by a polarized film. When this wave passes through the specimen, birefringence is developed according to the level of residual stress in the specimen and color fringed pattern appears after the second polarized film. Residual stress in the injection molded transparent flat a part has been measured quantitatively using the color fringed pattern. Optical characteristics have been a part also predicted by computer simulation and compared with experimental results.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) obtained by the saponification of poly(vinyl ester) like poly(vinyl acetate) o. poly(vinyl pivalate) is a linear semicrystalline polymer, which has been widely used as fibers for clothes and industries, films, membranes, medicines for drug delivery system, and cancer cell-killing embolic materials[1-3]. Improvement of Polarization Maintenance Property of Scattering Polarizer Film for Double-Screen 3D Projection Display Screen Applications Via Surface Oxide Deposition (산화막 증착을 통한 이중스크린 3D 프로젝션 디스플레이 스크린용 산란형 편광필름의 편광유지도 개선)

  • Keeping the polarization direction of the projection light unchanged is of crucial importance for high quality of images on a double-screen 3D projection display system. It has been found that the deposition of oxide layers on the surfaces of scattering polarizer film results in an improvement of polarization maintenance property of the film. The secondary image formed on the front screen by the light scattered from the rear screen decreases by 30% through the application of oxide layers on both surfaces of the screen. Since the oxide layer can also be used as an anti-reflection (AR) coating of the film, this method is very effective for the projection display applications.

  • 투과형 광 시야각 모드의 하나인 Fringe Field Switching (FFS) mode를 반사형 액정 디스플레이소자로 응용하여 전기 광학적 특성을 컴퓨터 시늉 하였다. FFS mode는 액정이 수평으로 균일하게 유지되면서 구동하므로, 시야각에 따른 굴절률 변화 역시 균일하게 유지된다. 이러한 특성 때문에 반사형 FFS mode는 부가적인 위상필름을 쓰지 않고, 액정층과 편광판 1매 만으로도 일정한 수준의 반사형 디스플레이 특성을 얻을 수 있다. 컴퓨터 시늉을 통해 1매 편광판과 액정층, 반사판으로 구성된 Normally Black모드의 셀 구조를 취하고, 셀 간격을 일정하게 유지하면서 액정의 ${\Delta}n$을 변화시켜 특성을 구하는 방식으로 수행하여, 입사광의 파장이 550nm일때 최적의 셀 위상차값으로 $d{\Delta}n$$0.1365{\mu}m$를 얻었다. 입사광원을 $0^{\circ}C$로 하고 편광판 투과율이 41%였을 때 정면 반사율은 on시 33.6%, off시 0.14%로 명암대비가 233:1이었다. 특히 시야각은 극각 $60^{\circ}C$이내의 전 방향에서 명암 대비비가 5이상의 특성을 보였다.

Double-Layer 3D Rear Projection Display System using Scattering Polarizer Film (후면투사 방식의 이중스크린 3D 프로젝션 디스플레이)

  • A new 3D rear projection display system using double-layer polarization-selective screen systems, one stacked in front of the other, has been developed. The front and rear screens are made of scattering polarizer films, and they either diffuse-scatter or transmit the incident light depending on the polarization state of the light. The near and for images are projected onto the front and rear screens, respectively, using light waves with mutually orthogonal polarization states. The new display system produces clear high-resolution images, which are visible over a wide range of viewing angle. It was found that the impression of depth is pronounced and eyestrain is only comparable to that by 2D display systems.

  • A laboratory study was carried out to recover KI crystals with high purity from a waste solution generated from the production of polarizing film for LCD industry. The waste solution contains 1 to 4% KI, and other impurities such as B, PVA and etc. More than 95% purity of KI crystals were produced through refining process such as vacuum evaporation and fractional crystallization. Most of B compounds and impurities were removed by concentrating the waste solution until KI content reached about 50%. The KI crystals were washed with solvents to remove most of PVA which gave result in producing 99.5% purity of crystals. The overall recovery of KI was about 90% during the concentration process.

  • Induction mechanism of molecular orientations for a rubbed polymer film as an alignment layer was investigated using polarized UV/Vis spectroscopic experiments for polyimide and polyvinylcinnamate whose conjugated electrons are located along main chain and side chain, respectively. By determining anisotropy formed in the rubbed film, LC director formed in the LC cell, and orientation direction of deposited pentacene molecules, it was found that LC orientation was induced mainly by molecular interactions whereas surface microgrooves formed by the rubbing process affect the orientation direction of deposited pentacene molecules.

  • The solution polymerization was conducted to synthesize pressure sensitive adhesive for polarizer film using acrylic monomers. 2-Ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, acrylic acid were used as acrylic monomers, benzoyl peroxide as initiator, ethyl acetate as solvent. The ratio of monomers was 2-ethylhexyl acrylate: butyl acrylate: acrylic acid = 25:50:3.6 reflecting $-40^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature in the pressure sensitive adhesive. The amount of initiator was determined as 0.09% to monomer considering wetting power and initial tackiness. The ratio of monomer to solvent was determined as 1:1.7 considering wetting power and transmissivity. The transmissivity of pressure sensitive adhesive increased with decreasing both viscosity and molecular weight due to reducing of refractive index by low entanglement between molecules. In the measurement of pot life, it was found that the storage stability was good at 1:1.7 of monomer: solvent without large change of viscosity during 200 min.
