  • Perovskite-type oxides were successfully prepared using malic acid method, characterized by TG/DTA, XRD, XPS, TEM and $H_2$-TPR and their catalytic activities for the combustion of benzene were determined. Almost of catalyst showed perovskite crystalline phase and 15-70 nm particle size. The $LaMnO_3$ catalysts showed the highest activity and the conversion reaches almost 100% at $350^{\circ}C$. The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity through substitution of metal into the A or B site of the perovskite oxides. In the $LaMnO_3$-type catalyst, the partial substitution of Sr into site the A-site enhanced the catalytic activity in the benzene combustion. In addition, the partial substitution of Co or Cu into site the B-site also enhanced the catalytic activity and the catalytic activity was in the order of Co > Cu > Fe in the $LaMn_{1-x}B_xO_3$ (B = Co, Fe, Cu) type catalyst.

  • Oxygen reduction in an alkaline fuel cell was studied by using perovskite type oxides as an oxygen electrode catalyst. The high surface area catalysts were prepared by malic acid method and had a formula of $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$(x=0.00, 0.01, 0.10, 0.20, 0.35 and 0.50). From the result of XRD pattern and specific surface area due to the amount of Fe substitution and the consumption of ammonia-water, the complex formation of Fe ion with $NH_3$ was the main factor for both the phase stability of perovskite and the increase of specific surface area. Multi-step calcination was necessary to give a single phase of perovskite in catalyst precursor. The crystal structure of the catalysts was simple cubic perovskite, which was verified from the XRD patterns of the catalysts. The activity of oxygen reduction was monitored by the techniques of cyclic voltammetry, static voltage-current method, and current interruption method. The activity(current density) of oxygen reduction showed its minimum at x=0.01 and its maximum between 0.20 and 0.35 of x-value in $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$. This tendency was independent of the change of surface area.

  • Perovskite-type oxides were successfully prepared using microwave-assisted process, and by XRD, XPS, BET, and $H_2-TPR$. Their catalytic activities for the combustion of benzene were also examined. Most of catalysts studied showed the perovskite crystalline phase with the particle size of 21~35 nm. The $LaMnO_3$ catalyst showed the highest activity and the conversion reached almost 100% at $250^{\circ}C$. The catalysts prepared by microwave-assisted process showed higher activity compared to those prepared sol-gel method. In addition, the catalytic activity was increased with an increase of calcination temperature of $LaMnO_3$-type catalyst. The TPR results on the measurement of redox property showed a good correlation with the order of catalytic activity on the benzene combustion reaction.

  • We have studied the reduction of NO by CO over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic and method. The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxides. In the $LaCoO_3$ type catalyst, the partial substitution of Sr into A site enhanced the catalytic activity on the conversion of NO at less than $350^{\circ}C$. In the $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$ catalyst, the partial substitution of Fe or Mn into B site enhanced the conversion of NO, but excess amount of Fe decreased the conversion of NO. In addition, $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}O_3$ mixed with $SnO_2$ or $MnO_2$ showed the synergy effect on the reduction of NO. The introduction of water into reactants feed decreased the catalytic activity but the deactivation was shown to be reversible. The introduction of $SO_2$ into reactants feed also decreased the catalytic activity.

  • Perovskite oxide catalysts doped on porous alumina beads are prepared in a citric acid solution. To investigate the applicability of the catalysts to the hot gas cleanup, a series of experiments on the reduction characteristics of $NO_x$ by CO as a reducing agent are carried out in a packed bed reactor containing the catalysts. Parameters tested are the operating temperature and $CO/NO_x$ molar ratio. It is found that mixed complex oxides of $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3$, $SrAl_{12}O_{19}$ and $LaAl_{11}O_{18}$ are uniformly distributed on the alumina beads. The conversion efficiency of $NO_x$ by CO sharply increases with the operating temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$ and then approaches 100% when $CO/NO_x$ molar ratio is greater than 1.0. The conversion efficiency of $NO_x$ is maintained by over 98% during a continuous operation for 23 hours at $800^{\circ}C$ and space velocity of $10700hr^{-1}$.

  • In this paper, a number of supported metal oxides and perovskite type catalysts were investigated for the NOx reduction from the diesel engine exhaust gas. All catalysts were made into pellets type with diameter of 3-4 mm alumina(Al$_2$O$_3$) as a supporter. These samples were tested by real diesel exhaust gas which contains CO, hydrocarbons and soot in the temperature range of 150~55$0^{\circ}C$ with the $3300h^{-1}$ space velocity (SV). Among the results, several promising catalysts showed NOx conversion above 50% in the temperature range of 150-35$0^{\circ}C$. From these results supported metal oxides catalysts and perovskite type could be recommended for the practical application to the automobile exhaust treatments.

  • We have studied the catalytic combustion of soot particulate over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic acid method. The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxide. In addition, the reaction conditions, such as temperature, $O_2$ concentration, space velocity have been studied. The effect of $SO_2$ pretreatment and water introduced into reactants were also examined. In the $LaCoO_3$ catalyst, the partial substitution of alkali metals into A site enhanced the catalytic activity in the combustion of soot particulate and the activity was shown in the order : Cs>K>Na; In the $La_{0.6}Cs_{0.4}CoO_3 $; catalyst, the substitution of Fe or Mn showed no effect on the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature decreased with increasing $O_2$ concentration and contact time. The introduction of water into reactants feed decreased the ignition temperature and the pretreatment of $SO_2$ showed no effect on the catalytic activity.
