  • This paper presents a fast pattern tracking method using location prediction in cubemap video for 360-degree VR. A spherical cubemap frame has six face textures and searching a pattern is much slower than a flat image. To overcome the limitation, we propose a method of predicting the location of target pattern using Kalman filter and reducing the search area by considering only textures of predicted location. The experimental results showed that the proposed system is much faster than the previous method of searching all six faces and also gives accurate pattern tracking performance.

  • For video compression, we have to consider two performance factors that are the search speed and coded video's quality. In this paper, we propose an enhanced fast block matching algorithm using the spatial correlation of the video sequence and the center-biased characteristic of motion vectors(MV). The proposed algorithm first finds a predicted motion vector from the adjacent macro blocks of the current frame and determines an exact motion vector using the cross pattern and a flat hexagon search pattern. From the performance evaluations, we can see that our algorithm outperforms both the hexagon-based search(HEXBS) and the cross-hexagon search(CHS) algorithms in terms of the search speed and coded video's quality. Using our algorithm, we can improve the search speed by up to 31%, and also increase the PSNR(Peak Signal Noise Ratio) by at most 0.5 dB, thereby improving the video quality.

  • Typical Apriori-like methods for mining sequential patterns have some problems such as generating of many candidate patterns and repetitive searching of a large database. And PrefixSpan constructs the prefix projected databases which are stepwise partitioned in the mining process. It can reduce the searching space to estimate the support of candidate patterns, but the construction cost of projected databases is still high. For efficient sequential pattern mining, we need to reduce the cost to generate candidate patterns and searching space for the generated ones. To solve these problems, we proposed SuffixSpan(Suffix checked Sequential Pattern mining), a new method for sequential pattern mining, and show a formal approach to our method.

  • Since motion estimation remove the redundant data to employ the temporal correlations between adjacent frames in a video sequence, it plays an important role in digital video coding. And in the block matching algorithm, search patterns of different shapes or sizes and the distribution of motion vectors have a large impact on both the searching speed and the image quality. In this paper, we propose a new fast block matching algorithm using the small-cross search pattern and the block-based gradient descent search pattern. Our algorithm first finds the motion vectors that are close to the center of search window using the small-cross search pattern, and then quickly finds the other motion vectors that are not close to the center of search window using the block-based gradient descent search pattern. Through experiments, compared with the block-based gradient descent search algorithm(BBGDS), the proposed search algorithm improves as high as 26-40% in terms of average number of search point per motion vector estimation.

  • The prediction of user location within a building can be applied to many areas like visitor guiding. The existing methods for solving this problem consider limited number of locations a user visited in the past to predict the current location. It cannot model the complex movement patterns, and makes the system inefficient by modeling simple ones too detail. Also it causes prediction errors. In this paper, there is no restriction on the length of past movement patterns to consider for current location prediction. For this purpose, a modified search tree is used. The search tree is constructed to make exact matching as needed for location prediction. The search tree makes the efficient and accurate prediction possible.

  • Pre-proposed AHHS(Adaptive Hierarchical Hexagon Search) is a kind of the fast hierarchical block matching algorithm based on the AHS(Adaptive Hexagon Search). It is characterized as keeping the merits of the AHS capable of fast estimating motion vectors and also adaptively reducing the local minima often occurred in the video sequences with higher spatio-temporal motion activity. The objective of this paper is to propose the method effectively extending the horizontal biased pattern and the vertical biased pattern of the AHHS to improve its predictive image quality. In the paper, based on computer simulation results for multiple video sequences with different motion characteristics, the performance of the proposed method was analysed and assessed in terms of the predictive image quality and the computational time. The simulation results indicated that the proposed method was both suitable for (quasi-) stationary and large motion searches. While the proposed method increased the computational load on the process extending the hexagon search patterns, it could improve the predictive image quality so as to cancel out the increase of the computational load.

  • In the anti-submarine warfare, a search using HMS is used as a basic strategy. The importance of HMS operation strategy is increasing, but it is hard to develop effective anti-submarine search strategy due to reciprocal actions among sea environments, search patterns, sonar operational tactics, anti-submarine search strategy, etc. In this research, a simulator was invented so as to analyze anti-submarine search patterns used when an HMS-carrying ship searches for submarine in various anti-submarine search environments. The simulator reflects various factors that influence anti-submarine search, and with consideration of search patterns of anti-submarine ships as well as evasive movement of submarines, it can simulate various anti-submarine search operations such as a collaborative anti-submarine operation by a single or multiple forces. Also, the simulator will contribute to developing and improving systematic and efficient HMS operational tactics in anti-submarine warfare.

  • Lots of geographic phenomena have dynamic spatial patterns with time changes, and there have been lots of researches on exploring these dynamic spatial patterns. However, most of these researches focused on the static pattern analysis in a given period, rather than dealing with dynamic changes in the spatial pattern over time with the continual or cumulative perspective. For this reason, investigation of the inertia of spatial process in terms of temporal changes is needed. From this background, the purpose of this paper is to propose the methodology to explore the changes in spatial pattern cumulatively by considering the inertia of the spatial statistics over time, and to apply it to the case study That is, we introduce the new spatial statistic, and produce the z-values of the statistic using Monte Carlo Simulation, and then to explore the changes in spatial patterns over time cumulatively. To do this, the method to combine the J statistic with CUSUM statistic for exploring spatial patterns, and to apply it to the changes in the commercial landuse in Erie County, New York State. Through the proposed method for spatio-temporal Patterns, we could explore continual changes effectively in the spatial patterns reflecting the statistics by temporal spot cumulatively.
