  • This paper explores the triple helix innovation system in Food Valley in the Netherlands which is considered one of the most innovative food clusters in the world. The triple helix approach has been so far little tackled in the literature on innovation system and cluster. However, tills approach can be a useful tool for understanding the dynamic characters and knowledge transfer mechanism of industrial cluster. On the basis of an in-depth case study, we argue that Food Valley has evolved through four circles of growth in the triple helix innovation system. From the mid-2000s onward, it is seen that Food Valley has been on the stabilized circle in the triple helix system of innovation. Centered upon Wageningen UR, local universities and research centers play a pivotal role in building the triple helix innovation system. To cope with radical changes in markets and technology since the late 1980s, local firms have made a great deal of effort to reinforce the university-industry partnership. On the other hand, government agencies have played a critical role for establishing institutional milieu that facilitate university-industry partnerships and local knowledge transfer and spillover.

  • The importance of convergence activities among business is increasing due to the necessity of designing and developing new products to satisfy various customers' needs. In particular, decision makers such as CEOs are required to participate in networks between entrepreneurs for being connected with valuable convergence partners. Moreover, it is important for entrepreneurs not only to make a large number of network connections, but also to understand the networking relationship with entrepreneurs with similar topic information. However, there is a difficult limit in collecting the topic information that can show the lack of current status of business and the technology and characteristics of entrepreneur in industry sector. In this paper, we solve these problems through the topic extraction method and analyze the business network in three aspects. Specifically, there are C, S, T-Layer models, and each model analyzes amount of entrepreneurs relationship, network centrality, and topic similarity. As a result of experiments using real data, entrepreneur need to activate network by connecting high centrality entrepreneur when the corporate relationship is low. In addition, we confirmed through experiments that there is a need to activate the topic-based network when topic similarity is low between entrepreneurs.

  • The present study investigates the relationship between social competence and economic performance in social enterprises. Social enterprises simultaneously pursue social value creation and economic value creation, two of which are not easily compatible each other. This study explores the conditions under which these two values can synergize with each other and thereby, positively affect each other's performance. In particular, I examine how two important social competences, that is, social identity and social alliance, influence economic performance of social enterprises. Using the secondary data on social enterprises from Korea Social Enterprise Promotion Agency, I run OLS regression analyses to test hypotheses. I find that investment on social value creation, only when it aligns with social identity, has a statistically significant and positive relationship with economic performance of social enterprises. Further, the study finds evidence that social alliance in and of itself does not affect economic performance of social enterprises. However, social alliance does have a positive influence on social enterprises' economic performance, only when taking into account social alliance partners' organizational attributes and a focal social enterprise's degree of readiness to absorb expected gains from social alliance altogether. The present study improves our understanding on social entrepreneurship research by suggesting how social enterprises can enhance two seemingly incompatible values in a simultaneous manner. I also discuss potentially fruitful future research agenda based on the present paper's findings.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the ownership structure of unlisted firms on KOSDAQ listing. There are few studies analyzing the characteristics of listing success based on ownership structure. For startup executives, there is not enough data to refer to the ownership structure that can increase the possibility of listing. This paper examines the effects of ownership structure on IPO success through comparison between listed successful and failed companies among the companies in application for KOSDAQ listing eligibility review. The major findings are as follows; (1) Venture capital investment and shareholding have a statistically positive effect on the success of KOSDAQ listing. This results indicate that the venture capital's investment alleviate the problem of information asymmetry, and it is a valid signal for market participants. The result means the role of venture capital seems to be important when companies are listed on the KOSDAQ. (2) The largest shareholder's stake has an inverted-U shape relationship with listing success. In other words, the ownership concentration mitigates moral hazard problem, which leads to listing success. However, if the ownership concentration exceeds a certain level, the chances of success in listing will decrease due to concerns over the pursuit of private interests. The result suggests that the largest shareholder's stake reduce agency problem. This study academically contributes to the existing literature by demonstrating the ownership structure affects IPOs, and explaining the results based on agent theory and signal theory. Our results provide practical implications for companies preparing for an IPO on the KOSDAQ.

  • The park program can adeptly cope with the diversification of leisure needs in accordance with the changing times. The program also makes the relationship between the users and the park itself closer. For this reason, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has operated a variety of programs, beginning with the Botanical Class Program at the Namsan Outdoor Botanical Garden in 1997. The government additionally began to organize park programs by establishing the Park and Leisure Department and three Park Greenery Offices. However, research on park programs is mainly focused on park users. Therefore, this study intends to reveal the structure of the programs by studying the program operation. The specific purposes of this study are '1. Review the institutional characteristics that underlie the operation of the Park Program in Seoul by examining the relevant laws, the operation organizations, and the personnel composition, 2. Analyze the operation methods, such as procurement and the execution of the program, operation costs, and public-private cooperation methods, etc. 3. Analyze the composition and contents of the program from 2015 to 2017, and process and identify the relationship between the structure of the program operation and the program itself.' Summarizing the results obtained from the study, as far as the structure of the first program operation, the support laws were not systematic, but the operating organization was working to establish a system. The second characteristic of the operation is that most of the budget was funded by local governments, but the level of citizen involvement was low. Third, when we looked at the characteristics of the program, the number of programs increased, but they were focused on a specific theme and few programs actively used the park facilities. Based on the results, three tasks can be proposed. The first is that the 'Act on Parks and Green Spaces' should include the concepts and support for park programs. Second, there is a need to change from the ideas of the quantitative increase of programs to qualitative improvements. Lastly, it is necessary to reorganize the Green Seoul Bureau of the Seoul Metropolitan Government into a citizen-led and leisure-oriented organization to promote the park leisure culture. This study has significance, as it was conducted with a service provider, not a program user, unlike many previous park program-related studies. The results of this study will be able to contribute not only to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, but also to other local governments to suggest the direction of the management and the operation of the park for the consumer, and consequently, it will help prepare the long-term vision of parks as the closest leisure location for most citizens.

  • 'Technological convergence' is the recent innovation trend which facilitates to solve social crux as well as to generate new industries. Korean government research institutes (GRIs) have taken a pivotal role for economic growth which capitalized on technology-oriented strategies. Recently, the policy interests on the transition of their role and mission towards multidisciplinary research organization is increasingly shed lights. This study regards the collaborative activities as one of the key success factors in the multidisciplinary research. In this sense, this study sets research purposes as follows: First, we intend to define a concept and to confine a scope of multidisciplinary research from the view point of R&D purposes and problem-solving process. Second, we categorize the collaboration and the relevant performances which reflect the characteristics of the multidisciplinary research. Third, we analyze the characteristics of collaborative activities and the effects of strength on the research performances. To this end, this study conducted a survey of 104 research project directors, which have experienced at least one of two types of multidisciplinary research projects through National R&D project or NST (National Research Council of Science & Technology) convergence research project. Then, we conducted regression analysis by utilizing the survey results in order to verify the relation between the collaborative activities and the performances. As results of analyses, first, the diversification of collaboration partners was a salient factor in the process of knowledge creation. Second, collective works among the researchers in similar area and domain enhanced mission-oriented technology development projects such as patent creation or technology transfer. Third, we verified that the diversity of created knowledge and the degree of relation continuity between researchers increased in the condition of guaranteeing individual researcher's independence and autonomy as well as sharing various technological capabilities. These results provide the future policy directions related to the methods to measure the collaboration and performance analysis for multidisciplinary research.

  • The current research was conducted to examine the factors that affect outsourcing performances, and further investigate whether a discrepancy in performance exists between the medical institutions and hotel service institutions. The study surveyed both medical and hotel administrators for approximately two months, who managed outsourcing tasks. Total of 325 responses out of 350 distributed were collected. However, due to inadequate responses, six responses were excluded, amounting to total of 319 (155 medical institutions, 164 hotels) valid responses included in the final analysis. First, the informal outsourcing relationships between representatives of outsourcing service seekers and providers did not appear to have significant effects in terms of the levels of trust in neither medical institutions nor hotel industries. However, the relationships affected outsourcing degrees exclusively in medical institutions, showing the disparity between the two service institutions. This was explained due to the continuing long term efforts required to establish an informal relationship in medical institutions. Second, communication was shown to have positive effects on levels of trust in both medical institutions and hotel industries. This indicates a prominent outsourcing trait that emphasizes the significance of mutual cordial communication that contributes to establishing positive relationships. Third, opportunistic behavior of the outsourcing service providers appeared to negatively affect the levels of trust as well as outsourcing degrees for both medical and hotel industries. Therefore, opportunistic behaviors were found to have more tendencies to causing tension and discomfort rather than creating a relationship based on mutual credibility or conviviality. Fourth, the effect of service infrastructures on the level of trust did not appear to be significant on medical institutions, while showing positive influence on hotel industries. Additionally, service infrastructures were found to positively influence the outsourcing performance levels for both sectors. Fifth, trust between outsourcing service seekers and providers did not appear to have noticeable impact on the outsourcing degrees for either institution. On the contrary, trust appeared to have positive impacts on performance for both institutions. This further indicates that, when engaging in outsourcing, strengthening relationships through mutual partnership with outsourcing entities rather than establishing contractual relationships leads to improving the reciprocal trust, which in turn improves work results. Lastly the outsourcing degree of service seekers appeared to have positive impact on the outsourcing performance for both medical institutions and hotel industries, indicating the causal relationship between the affectability of outsourcing degrees and the following performance results.

  • The importance of business strategy for successful social media engagement has quickly increased as more businesses engage in social media. The importance is even greater for startup companies because startup companies are genuinely new to business, and they need to increase their presence in the market, and quickly access future customers. The objective of this paper lies in exploring key indicators of social media engagements by selected startup companies. The key indicators include two aspects of social media usages by the companies: i) overall social media activities, and ii) properties of network structure of the information flow platform provided by social media service. To better assess and evaluate the key indicators of social media usages by startup companies, the indicators will be compared with those of selected large established companies. Twitter is selected as a social media service for the analysis of this paper, and using Twitter REST API, data regarding the key indicators of overall Twitter activities and the Twitter follower-network of each company in the sample are collected. Then, the data are analyzed using social network analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis to examine the characteristics of the follower-network structures and to compare the characteristics between startup companies and established companies. The results show that most indicators are significantly different across startup companies and established companies. One key interesting finding is that the startup companies have proportionally more influencers in their follower-networks than the established companies have. Another interesting finding is that the follower-networks of startup companies in the sample have higher modularity and higher transitivity, suggesting that the startup companies tend to have a proportionally larger number of communities of users in their follower-networks, and the users in the networks are more tightly connected and cohesive internally. The key business implication for the future social media engagement efforts by startup companies in general is that startup companies may need to focus on getting more attention from influencers and promoting more cohesive communities in their follower-networks to appreciate the potential benefits of social media in the early stage of business of startup companies.

  • This study analyzed the start-up education curriculum and start-up education programs of seven universities in the U.S. to find out what courses are provided, what various programs exist, and what the characteristics of start-up education in each university are. California State University, San Bernardino / University of California, Irvine / Drexel University / Oklahoma State University / Florida State University / San Diego State University / University of Southern California where entrepreneurship education based on the Entrepreneurship Degree Course is being established based on the Entrepreneurship Center of seven universities in the United States, which is not well introduced in Korea. This study examined how the start-up education courses and start-up support systems at seven universities in the U.S. are progressing at the undergraduate, MBA, master's and doctoral levels, and comparative levels. Through the case studies of the universities presented, the primary analysis was carried out to explore the various characteristics of American university start-up education. The implications of start-up education at American universities in this study are as follows. First, in order for universities to take the initiative in providing start-up education, they should be organized to suit the course of start-up education suitable for the characteristics of universities and introduce support programs. Second, it is necessary to establish an independent center within domestic universities to be operated autonomously. Third, the start-up education of universities should include building university-industry partnerships, operating entrepreneurship degree courses and collaboration between departments of universities. Fourth, the independent center should lead the active participation of alumni and local start-ups and start-up-related programs should be operated based on this. Fifth, Differentiated programs for each university's characteristics should be introduced and applied to universities. Although case studies have limitations that cannot be generalized, they can provide a useful framework. Therefore, it is necessary to design a systematic start-up education that reflects the correct design direction and characteristics of each university.
