  • Classical theory of hydrodynamic pressure on dams during earthquakes is revisited and examined with linear transient theory. Because the ground motion during earthquakes is not only transient but also consists of random horizontal and vertical motions, it is proper to treat hydrodynamic pressure on dams with transient theory for random, transient earthquake motions. The present study fines that surface waves are negligible and that the present theory agrees well with the classical theory if the ground motion is horizontal and harmonic with a high frequency.

  • We developed a novel polarization filter to separate linearly polarized waves from elliptically polarized waves in an infinite homogeneous medium and at the free surface using methods of multicomponent complex trace analysis. Sensitivity to filter parameters were examined using synthetic data simulating particle motions in a homogeneous medium. For known amplitude ratios of horizontal-to-vertical components of P and Rayleigh waves $C_L$ and $C_R$, respectively, the polarization filter precisely removes Rayleigh waves. Errors in the vertical and horizontal components of the filtered results increase with the ratio $C_R$/$C_L$ and the product $C_R$.$C_L$, respectively. The vertical component errors also increase rapidly as the ratios of applied-to-modeled values of $C_L$ and $C_R$ ($C_L'$/$C_L$ and $C_R'$/$C_R$) decrease, and are sensitive to $C_R'$/$C_R$ and $C_L'$/$C_L$ for small and large incidence angles, respectively. Errors of the filter are exactly the same for shear waves when the incidence angle is the supplementary of P-wave incidence angle.

  • The very large floating structure which can be used for as airport may be as large as several kilometer long and wide. The first order wave forces as well as wave drift forces are very important forces on such a very large floating structures. In the present study, the time simulation of motion responses for dolphin-moored VLFS in waves is presented. The hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces involved in the equations are obtained from a three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The horizontal drift forces and mooring forces for dolphin systems are taken into account. As for numerical example, time domain analyses are carried out for a VLFS(Phase I) in irregular wave condition.

  • Nonhydrostatic effects on convectively forced mesoscale flows in two dimensions are numerically investigated using a nondimensional model. An elevated heating that represents convective heating due to deep cumulus convection is specified in a uniform basic flow with constant stability, and numerical experiments are performed with different values of the nonlinearity factor and nonhydrostaticity factor. The simulation result in a linear system is first compared to the analytic solution. The simulated vertical velocity field is very similar to the analytic one, confirming the high accuracy of nondimensional model's solutions. When the nonhydrostaticity factor is small, alternating regions of upward and downward motion above the heating top appear. On the other hand, when the nonhydrostaticity factor is relatively large, alternating updraft and downdraft cells appear downwind of the main updraft region. These features according to the nonhydrostaticity factor appear in both linear and nonlinear flow systems. The location of the maximum vertical velocity in the main updraft region differs depending on the degrees of nonlinearity and nonhydrostaticity. Using the Taylor-Goldstein equation in a linear, steady-state, invscid system, it is analyzed that evanescent waves exist for a given nonhydrostaticity factor. The critical wavelength of an evanescent wave is given by ${\lambda}_c=2{\pi}{\beta}$, where ${\beta}$ is the nonhydrostaticity factor. Waves whose wavelengths are smaller than the critical wavelength become evanescent. The alternating updraft and downdraft cells are formed by the superposition of evanescent waves and horizontally propagating parts of propagating waves. Simulation results show that the horizontal length of the updraft and downdraft cells is the half of the critical wavelength (${\pi}{\beta}$) in a linear flow system and larger than ${\pi}{\beta}$ in a weakly nonlinear flow system.

  • In this study, we suggested the wave power generator using horizontal motions of the wave for use in the coastal sea. The length of the horizontal movement of the wave in the vicinity of the sea surface is larger than the length of the vertical reciprocating movement of the wave, hence the proposed device has a wave power transmission plate. In addition, because the motion of the wave is maximum to the sea surface, by arranging the buoyancy tanks at the top of the wave power transmission plate, it is always capable of vertical movement in accordance with the sea surface. To confirm the usefulness of the proposed wave power generator, we constructed a mathematical model of the wave power generator and carried out simulation using bondgraph. Furthermore, the efficiency was verified by measuring the degree of electrical energy production through a preliminary experiment.

  • For a moored body on the sea surface, incident waves with narrow-banded spectra excite the body oscillations of short and long periods. Since the period of slow oscillations can be as long as the natural period of the moored body in horizontal modes, resonance can occur and resulting large motions may cause significant strains in mooring cables. By using the perturbation method of multiple scales, the large slow motion can be analyzed without solving any second-order potentials explicitly. To the leading order, the flows associated with the fast and slow motions interact only parametrically and thus they can be studied separately. It is found that the slow motion strongly depends on the mooring stiffness. In particular, if the moring stiffness is considerably weak compared to the body inertia, the slow motion is highly amplified near resonance. It is also shown that the slow motion is associated with the generation of long waves.

  • In order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in multi-component seismic data, we developed new polarization filters based on the method of multicomponent complex trace analysis. Unlike the previous polarization filters, the present filters separately compute linear and elliptic components at each time sample using amplitude ratio of horizontal and vertical components of body waves and ellipticity of Rayleigh waves. The polarization filters work ideally even with low S/N data. Application of the filters to both synthetic and real seismic data shows that Rayleigh waves of elliptic motions are effectively eliminated and both P and S waves of linear motions are well separated each other.

  • Two-dimensional large-amplitude motions in regular harmonic wave are treated in time domain, by satisfying the exact body boundary condition and the linear free surface condition. For the present numerical calculation, the method of free-surface spectral representation with simple source distribution on the instantaneous body surface has been extended to include the effect of the incident wave. Calculations of the wave exciting force are performed for a submerged circular cylinder fixed or oscillating with large amplitude. Especially, nonlinear effects on the time-mean forces are studied in detail. It is shown that relative motion between the body and the fluid particle gives a significant effect on the lift and drift forces. Also, large-amplitude motion of a submerged circular cylinder and that of a floating Lewis-form cylinder are directly simulated in time domain. In the calculation results, some nonlinear effects are shown.

  • A study has been made on the hydrodynamic forces on and the motion response of a sliding block in a bay within the framework of linear potential theory. To simplify the problem, following assumptions are made : The configuration of the bay is a long channel with narrow width, constant depth and straight coastline. Incident waves are long compared to the depth. We applied matched asymptotic expansion techniques. The flued domain is subdivided into three regions ; ocean, bay entrance, bay regions. Boundary-vague problems are solved first in each region. Then unknown coefficients are determined by matching individual solutions at the intermediate region between two neighboring legions. It is found that the motion of the block is greatly amplified at the resonant frequencies, in particular at the quarter wavelength mode. We examined the mechanism of negative added mass, which results from the localized hydrodynamic resonance.
