The foundation area for tram contains biotite gneiss, quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, calc-silicate rock, and porphyroblastic gneiss of the pre-Cambrian Kyeonggi gneiss complex. These rocks record at least three stages of deformation, as indicated by fold sets of contrasting orientations (D1-D3). Joints are generally steeply dipping and strike NW-SE to WNW-ESE. The Gonjiam Fault, which strikes WNW-ESE, follows a river in the area. The fault possesses a 3-m-wide fracture zone, a 10-m-wide damage zone, and is 15 km long. Two tunnels have been constructed through the biotite gneiss. The geometric relationship between discontinuities (e.g., joints and foliation) and tunneling direction reveals that set 3 of the AA tunnel is unstable but that BB tunnel is relatively safe.
As a preliminary study to establish fracture network model in crystalline rocks, detail investigation on fracture characteristics were performed. Five fracture sets were determined on the basis of regional survey of geological structures and fractures on outcrops. Among the fracture sets, S1 set has the highest density and longest trace length of fractures which was identified on surface in the study area. S4 and S5 sets are composed of foliations and foliation parallel shear joints of gneisses, which are very important sets at the aspect of weighting of fracture length. For characterization of subsurface fractures, detail core logging was performed to identify fractures and fracture zones from five boreholes. Acoustic televiewer logging and borehole geophysical loggings produced images, orientations and geophysical properties of fractures which intersect with boreholes. According to the result of the investigations, subsurface fractures can be grouped as three preferred orientations(B1, B2 and B3), which correspond to S1, S2 and S4/S5 of surface fracture sets, respectively. Actually, B1 set is expected to be intensely developed at subsurface. However, it has low frequency of intersection with boreholes due to its parallel or sub-parallel direction to boreholes. According to the inference of conductive fractures, B1 and B3 sets have possibilities of water flow and their intersection lines are also thought to consist of important conduits of groundwater flow. In particular, faults which are parallel to foliations control major groundwater flow in the study area.
Specific survey objectives often cannot be met using only one geophysical method, as each method's results are influenced by the specific physical properties of subsurface materials. In particular, areas susceptible to geological hazards require investigation using more than one method in order to reduce risks to life and property. Instead of analyzing the results from each method separately, this work develops a four-quadrant criterion for classifying areas of levees as safe or weak. The assessment is based on statistically determined thresholds of seismic velocity (P-wave velocity from seismic refraction and S-wave velocity from multichannel analysis of surface waves) and electrical resistivity. Thresholds are determined by subtracting the standard deviation from the mean during performance testing of this correlation technique applied to model data of four horizontal and inclined fracture zones. Compared with results from the crossplot of resistivity and P-wave velocity, crossplot analysis using resistivity and S-wave velocity data provides more reliable information on the soil type, ground stiffness, and lithological characteristics of the levee system. A loose and sandy zone (represented by low S-wave velocity and high resistivity) falling within the second quadrant is interpreted to be a weak zone. This interpretation is well supported by the N values from standard penetrating test for the central core.
The appearance of faults during tunnel construction is often difficult to predict in terms of strike, dip, scale, and strength, even though this information is essential in determining the strength of the surrounding rock mass. However, the strength and rock mass classification of fault zones are generally determined empirically on the construction site. In this study, 109 specimens were collected from fault of nine area throughout Korea, and direct shear tests were conducted and the particle distribution was analyzed to better characterize the fault zones. Six multiple regression models were established, using 97 of the specimens, to analyze the correlation between the shear strengths and weight rations of these fault materials. A verification of the six models, using the remaining 12 specimens, shows that in all of the models the coefficient of determination yielded $R^2{\geq}0.60$, with two models yielding $R^2{\geq}0.69$. These results provide useful information for determining the shear strength of fault materials in future studies.
A difficulty encountered in engineering seismic mapping is that reflection events from shallow discontinuities are commonly overlapped with coherent noise such as air wave, direct waves, head waves, and high-amplitude surface waves. Here, the radial trace transform, a simple geometric re-mapping of a trace gather (x-t domain) to another trace gather (v-t domain), is applied to investigate the rejection effect of coherent linear noises. Two different types of data sets were selected as a representative database: good-quality data for intermediate sounding (hundreds of meters) in a sedimentary basin and very noisy data for shallow (${\leq}50m$) mapping of the weathered zone and bedrock surface. Results obtained with cascaded application of the radial transform and low-cut filtering proved to be as good as, or better than, those produced using f-k filtering, and were especially effective for air wave and direct wave. This simple transform enables better understanding of the characteristics of various types of noise in the RT domain, and can be generally applied to overcoming diffractions and back-scatterings caused by joints, fractures, and faults commonly that are encountered in geotechnical problems.
Electrical resistivity tomography was carried out at seawater intrusion monitoring wells located at watershed in coastal areas. It is difficult to identify the characteristics of resistivity near monitoring well in case of using high signalto-noise ratio array due to the high conductivity condition in coastal aquifer although electrical resistivity survey is well adopted to delineate hydrogeological characteristics with the distribution of electrical resistivity. To improve the quality of electrical resistivity survey for two sites with seawater intrusion monitoring wells, inversion with the results of holeto-surface electrical resistivity tomography using single well was executed. The results of inversion for aquifer near wells were verified with the results of drilling log with the informations of fracture, electrical conductivity logging and normal resistivity logging. The inversion for aquifer near one of two wells was also performed at low and high tide with the same electrodes, respectively. From the inversion result, it is possible to obtain the resistivity images with high resolution and to identify the characteristics of aquifer related to seawater intrusion with tidal fluctuation. From this study, it was demonstrated that the hole-to-surface electrical resistivity tomography method accompanied with drilling log, electrical conductivity logging and normal resistivity logging would be useful to delineate the hydrogeological structures near monitoring wells in coastal areas.
Mountain and hill areas occupy by more than 70% in South Korea and Rock drilling should be applied in order to reduce noisy & vibration from massive civil engineering business such as road expansion, high-way construction, subway construction and construction of site renovation such as a newly-built & re-development of apartment, newly-built of high-rising building in downtown area. As Blasting noise & vibration such as vibration, noise, fly rock etc caused by blasting operation from large small scale construction occurs, neighboring residents who demand the compensation file a civil complaint so that the business reach a deadlock. As the excavation method for these areas, There are blasting of micro-vibration, mechanical excavation method(Rock splitter, Breaker etc), similar blasting method(plasma, gel fragmentation etc) to date. In this study, we are trying to find the feature & performance which get improved economic feasibility & construct ability through improving sympathetic detonation of New KINECKER-I used in blasting of micro-vibration & formulation and would provide convenience for use by introducing standard blasting pattern & construction method. Also, checked and confirmed all the blasting with connecting cap has been cleary detonated.
The knowledge of rock strength is important in assessing wellbore stability problems, effective sanding, and the estimation of in situ stress field. Numerous empirical equations that relate unconfined compressive strength of sedimentary rocks (sandstone, shale, and limestone, and dolomite) to physical properties (such as velocity, elastic modulus, and porosity) are collected and reviewed. These equations can be used to estimate rock strength from parameters measurable with geophysical well logs. Their ability to fit laboratory-measured strength and physical property data that were compiled from the literature is reviewed. While some equations work reasonably well (for example, some strength-porosity relationships for sandstone and shale), rock strength variations with individual physical property measurements scatter considerably, indicating that most of the empirical equations are not sufficiently generic to fit all the data published on rock strength and physical properties. This emphasizes the importance of local calibration before one utilizes any of the empirical relationships presented. Nonetheless, some reasonable correlations can be found between geophysical properties and rock strength that can be useful for applications related to wellhole stability where haying a lower bound estimate of in situ rock strength is especially useful.
The study area, located in Sinam-ri, Ulsan, in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, is mainly composed of hornblende granite (ca. 65 Ma). Fracturing and reactivation of a fault striking ENE-WSW was strongly controlled by the intrusion of a mafic dyke (ca. 44 Ma), which behaves as a discontinuity in the mechanically homogeneous pluton, increasing the instability of the basement in this area. A geometric and kinematic study undertaken to interpret the faults and fractures was performed in a trench excavated almost perpendicular to the orientation of the dyke. The analysis of structural elements, such as dykes, veins, and faults, is used to infer the deformation history and to determine the paleostress orientations at the time of formation of the structures. The deformation history established based on this analysis is as follows: (1) NNE-SSW, E-W, ENE-WSW, and NE-SW trending fractures had already developed in the pluton before dyke intrusion; (2) felsic dykes intruded under conditions of σHmax oriented N-S and σHmin oriented E-W; (3) mafic dykes intruded under conditions of σHmax oriented E-W and σHmin oriented N-S; (4) dextral reactivation of the main fault associated with the development of hydrothermal quartz veins under conditions of σHmax oriented E-W and σHmin oriented N-S; (5) sinistral reactivation of the main fault and high-angle normal faults under conditions of σHmax oriented NE-SW and σHmin oriented NW-SE; and (6) dextral reactivation of the main fault and NE-SW low-angle reverse faults under conditions of σHmax oriented NW-SE and σHmin oriented NE-SW. These results are consistent with the tectonic history of the Pohang-Ulsan block in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, and indicates the tectonic deformation of the southern area of the Ulsan fault bounded by Yangsan fault was analogous to that of the Pohang-Ulsan area from the Cenozoic. This work greatly aids the selection of sites for critical facilities to prevent potential earthquake hazards in this area.
