This paper studies on mechanical properties, fractures, and ultrasonic characteristics of Pure Titanium welds using ultrasonic attenuation. Ti specimen was made by using AR purge gas. When the titanium weld specimen is fractured, Tensile tests were conducted in order to observe the ultrasonic signal changes. A scanning electron microscope(SEM) was used to observe changes in failure surface and an ultrasonic normal probe with the central frequency of 4 MHz was used to obtain ultrasonic signals. As a result, the value of the mechanical properties in the weld zone was lower than that in the base zone and heat affected zone(HAZ) from Ti. Also the grain size in the weld zone was bigger than that in the weld zone and HAZ from Ti. Ultrasonic signals using a RMS method presents correlation between envelope area and the tensile strength. Consequently, the ultrasonic method could be potential tool for integrity evaluation of the Ti weld zone.

This study verified the relationship between fracture mechanics parameters and X-ray parameters for normalized SS41 steel with homogeneous crystal structure and M.E.F. dual phase steel(martensite encapsulated islands of ferrite). The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The change in X-ray parameters(residual stress, half-value breadth) according to the depth of fatigue fractured surface were investigated. The depth of maximum plastic zone, $w_y$, were determined on the basis of the distribution of the half-value breadth for normalized SS41 steel and that of the residual stress for M.E.F. dual phase steel. $K_{max}$ could be estimated by the measurement of $w_y$.

Forensic engineering is the area of expertise of people qualified to serve as engineering experts in courts of law or during arbitration proceedings. An aerial-lifter can lift and carry load, including people, using power. Recently, failure of aerial-lifter internal parts while working and sweeping causing injuries and damage to property almost always generates conflict between the automaker and customer. Hence, the investigation of such events generally involves an engineering analysis. One of the possible reasons for accidents, such as a vehicle catching fire is the failure of oil pressure machine and the supporting pin. The results of formal inspections and engineering tests can reveal the cause for the failure of the mechanical parts. Therefore, the failure mechanism is analyzed by adopting fractography methods and by applying an instrumented indentation technique to compare the material properties of the reference part with those of the malfunctioning part.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of weld line on the mechanical strengths and the process of weld line elimination in the Zircaloy-4 resistance upset welding for the fabrication of heavy water reactor fuel rods. The weld current and the amount of upset increased linearly with the main heat, in which two relations between them were derived. It was found that the threshold to obtain sound weld was 50% of main heat in terms of weld upset size, mechanical strengths and weld line elimination. The weld microstructure of resistance upset welds of Zircaloy-4 comprsied basketweave, Widmanstatten and martensite respectively by changing the main heats. Dimples on uniaxially fractured surface at weld line in the Zr-4 welds were larger and deeper compared with those on biaxially fractured surface. It was also found that the process of the weld line elimination in the resistance upset weld of Zircaloy-4 could be divided into three stages in terms of the presence of many pores, their shrinkage and elimination, and the shrinkage of the original weld interface with increasing weld currents.

Forensic Engineering is the art and science of professionals qualified to serve as engineering experts in courts of law or in arbitration proceedings. Buses using compressed natural gas (CNG) trend to be extended in use internationally as optimal counterplan for reducing discharge gas of light oil due to high concern about environment. However, CNG buses have to be equipped with composite pressure vessels (CPVs); since the CPVs contain compressed natural gas, the risks in the case of accident is very high. Hence, the investigation of such accidents is usually associated with engineering analysis. Among the possible reasons for such CNG explosion accidents is vehicle fire and vessel fracture. By conducting formal inspection and engineering tests, in this study, the cause of vessel explosion is investigated by analyzing the failure mechanism by fractography and by comparing the material properties of a reference part with those of a problem part by adopting instrumented indentation technique.

This study was carried out for the purpose of improving driving safety and comfort of the railways quickly becoming popular. To conducted gas pressure welding to ensure the strength safety of continuous welded rail and rotating bending test tensile test was conducted. The element to determine the tensile strength of gas pressure welds at experiments be attributed to more upsetting length than pressure, according to increases of upsetting length, from brittle fracture to ductile fracture was observed. Through the biopsy of the fracture surface, according to the presence of brittle fracture could be evaluated to strength safety. In addition, mechanical strength of gas pressure welding depending on changes in upsetting length was different. Rotary bending test results were obtained to the infinite life according to exhibited higher fatigue limit of 373MPa at upsetting length 25mm.

The last stage blades of a low pressure (LP) turbine get frequently fractured because of stress corrosion cracking. This is because they operate in a severe corrosive environment that is caused by the impurities dissolved in condensed steam and high stress due to high speed rotation. To improve the reliability of the blades under severe conditions, 12% Cr martensitic stainless steel, having excellent corrosion resistance and higher strength, is widely used as the blade material. This paper shows the result of root cause analysis on a blade which got fractured suddenly during normal operation. Testing of mechanical properties and microstructure examination were performed on the fractured blade and on a blade in sound condition. The results of testing of mechanical properties of the fractured blade showed that the hardness were higher but impact energy were lower, and were not meeting the criteria as per the material certificate specification. This result showed that the fractured blade became embrittled. The branch-type crack was found to have propagated through the grain boundary and components of chloride and sulfur were detected on the fractured surface. Based on these results, the root cause of fracture was confirmed to be stress corrosion cracking.

In this study, evaluation of acoustic emission signals characteristics for the post weld heat treated (PWHT) multi-pass weldment and weldment was dealt. Charpy standard specimens were taken from the lowest, middle and highest regions of the weld block. Pre-crack was made using the repeated load. Four point bend and AE tests were conducted simultaneously. Regardless of the specimens, AE signals were absent within elastic region and produced in the process of plastic deformation. AE signals for all specimens were not emitted after the maximum load. Value of signal strength for the all PWHT specimens was lower than that of the weldment. Besides, relations of plastic deformation zone size and accumulated AE counts for the PWHT specimens were more simple compared with the weldment. In case of the PWHT specimen, particles on the fractured surface decreased prominently compared with the weldment due.to PWHT. From these results, it can be concluded that PWHT was effective in reducing the AE sources for the weldment.
