  • This study explores if the higher initial returns and the poorer long-run performance observed in the IPOs markets are associated with the firms offered in the 'hot markets,' and then empirically examines the effect of optimistic investors' sentiment on this phenomenon, particularly in the aspects of both pricing mechanism and the opportunistic behavior of offering firms. We analyzed a total of 432 IPO firms for the years between 2001 and 2005. This analysis finds that the initial returns and long-run under-performances of 'IPOs in the hot market' are significantly higher than those of 'IPOs in the cold market.' This study also finds that the proxy variables for the optimistic investors' sentiment have a positive effect on the initial return and negative effect on the long-run performance. Finally, this research finds no difference of ownership structure, venture capital backed, and financial properties between hot market IPOs and cold market IPOs. R&D expenditure rate and financial qualities of IPOs are higher in the hot market than in the cold market. These results do not support the 'windows of opportunity' hypothesis that low quality firms take advantage of hot market condition for successful IPOs.

  • This study is designed to investigate whether the information spillover effect is existed between the foreign investors' unexpected volatility of net purchasing intensity and the volatilities of returns in terms of daily closing stock return, overnight return, and daytime return, before and after financial crisis in Korea. The result of this study shows that there is negative information spillover effect between the foreign investors' unexpected volatility of net purchasing intensity and the volatility of daily closing stock return for time t-1. However, there is an opposite result for time t, showing positive information transmission effect. For the overnight return, the test result provides there is no statistical significance between the foreign investor's unexpected volatility of net purchasing intensity and the volatilities of return. In addition, I found that the information transmission effect is existed between the foreign investor's unexpected volatility of net purchasing intensity and the volatilities of the daytime return for the entire timeline.

  • This paper addresses an approach that recommends investment types for stock investors by discovering useful rules from past changing patterns of stock prices in databases. First, we define a new rule model for recommending stock investment types. For a frequent pattern of stock prices, if its subsequent stock prices are matched to a condition of an investor, the model recommends a corresponding investment type for this stock. The frequent pattern is regarded as a rule head, and the subsequent part a rule body. We observed that the conditions on rule bodies are quite different depending on dispositions of investors while rule heads are independent of characteristics of investors in most cases. With this observation, we propose a new method that discovers and stores only the rule heads rather than the whole rules in a rule discovery process. This allows investors to define various conditions on rule bodies flexibly, and also improves the performance of a rule discovery process by reducing the number of rules. For efficient discovery and matching of rules, we propose methods for discovering frequent patterns, constructing a frequent pattern base, and indexing them. We also suggest a method that finds the rules matched to a query issued by an investor from a frequent pattern base, and a method that recommends an investment type using the rules. Finally, we verify the superiority of our approach via various experiments using real-life stock data.

  • According to the equity home bias theory, foreign investors are considered to have less information than native investors. However, as the economy becomes liberalized and overseas economic innovation has a great influence on the local economy, it is possible for foreign investors to invest as informed traders. This study analyzes whether information on trade amount by nationality has specific characteristics. The findings are summarized as follows. First, the increase in trading by foreign investors has negative effects on stock returns. There is no significant difference in these negative effects by nationality. This means that foreign investors show strong herd behavior regardless of nationality. Second, foreigners' investment activities increase stock price volatility, but the impact is not significant. Third, the behavior of foreign investors is still positive feedback. However, there are signs that positive feedback behavior may be changing, especially for funds from the United States and the Cayman Islands. Finally, tax haven zone funds have different investment strategies than other foreign investors. However, Cayman Islands funds, which are estimated to be closely related to Korea, are different from Luxembourg and Ireland funds. These findings undermine the fundamentals of the equity home bias theory.

  • Even though crowdfunding has become popular as a novel means of raising capital for early-stage ventures and startups through an Internet-based platform, it is unclear how a funder's characteristics, such as motivation and ability, influence their information processing and pledging decision. This study aims to propose and test a research model for determining the relationships between a funder's personal attributes, information processing style, and funding intention. To test the research model, we collected data from 139 Amazon Mechanical Turk participants through an online questionnaire survey. The findings indicate that a funder's self-efficacy has a positive effect on heuristic processing but has no significant effect on systematic processing. By contrast, a funder's personal relevance positively influences both systematic and heuristic processing. Furthermore, heuristic processing, as well as perceived value and perceived risk, influence pledging intentions positively. Our findings potentially contribute to improving the design of crowdfunding platforms to better support a funder's information needs. Based on our findings, we discuss the implications of our study as well as the directions for future research.

  • Although cryptocurrency which can promote innovation in the blockchain ecosystem is published for many useful purposes, in Korea, cryptocurrency is recognized only as a means of investment for the profit. The fact emphasizes only the speculative nature of the cryptocurrency, so investor negates the fundamental purpose of cryptocurrency and hinders innovation in the blockchain ecosystem. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause of cryptocurrency perception and speculative behavior of domestic cryptocurrency investors from an academic perspective. We use a model that reflects the traditional considerations and cryptocurrency's characteristics in investment. Using the model, we can explain the cause of misperception of cryptocurrency through the theory of bounded rationality. In building the research model, we use variables of venture and angel investor's consideration used in investment decisions and collect the keywords from indexes of whitepaper to reflect the properties of cryptocurrency. This study mentions that, due to the imitations presented by Simon, individuals are forced to perceive cryptocurrency as a means of speculation and to make irrational decisions that impair ecosystem health. We analyze whether there is a significant difference in rationality in decision made by the sample under limited knowledge and imperfect information constraints. As a result, imperfect information constraints led investors to consider only irrational criteria in decision making. From this result, this study suggests that information asymmetry needs to be relaxed so that investment can be pursued together with rational investment and development of blockchain ecosystem. In addition, the industry can capture strategic insights for successful financing through ICO by enabling better understanding of investor decision-making.

  • This study uses Korea's equity fund-related data ranging from Jan. 2002 to Apr. 2010 to analyze the existence of cross-subsidization among funds managed by the same management company. The findings are as follows: i) a transfer of performance outcome is confirmed to move from low-fee funds to high-fee funds, meaning that management companies tend to maximize their own interest than investors' return. And such a tendency has been strengthened since 2008. ii) young funds overperform old funds, iii) funds with high returns in the previous quarter perform better than funds with low return in the same period. These results suggest that in order to protect investors, it is necessary to conduct close monitoring on transactions that might undermine the benefits of investors and comprehensive evaluation on the capability of management companies.

  • Using an international setting, this study investigates the relation between cash holdings and financial reporting quality, measured by accruals quality. Empirical results show that the balance of cash holdings is positively related to the opacity of financial reporting in non-U.S. international markets. The relation becomes stronger as the strength of investor protection increases, implying that precautionary motives, instead of agency motives, drive the increase of cash holdings of opaque firms. In addition, the positive relation is stronger for discretionary accruals quality. The decomposition of the aspects of investor protection shows that public enforcement through regulation authorities is the main driver of the positive relation between cash holdings and the opacity of financial reporting.
