As a way to the optimum design of the collector well lateral in riverbed filtration, experiments were performed using sand tanks which were connected to form a model lateral system. Measured were the residual hydraulic heads along the laterals, the discharge rates at each sand tank and the production rates at the collector well while the model laterals were operated with various scenarios of changing parameters including water level of the collector well, the lateral diameter and length, and the hydraulic conductivity of the sand. Results showed that riverbed filtration could be more efficient when the resistance in the lateral was weak compared with the resistance in the sand, which was indicated by the more flattened distribution of the residual hydraulic heads along the lateral. Results also showed that the discharge rate increased exponentially with the approach to the collector well, and that the exponent increased as the lateral diameter decreased and/or the hydraulic conductivity of the sand increased. It was also seen that the well production increased with the increase in the lateral length and diameter although the marginal productivity decreased. It could be concluded that the axial flow velocity in the lateral was an important factor governing the efficiency of a lateral in riverbed filtration and that the maximum entrance velocity to the collector well, over which the efficiency decreased drastically, was about 1 m/sec under the conditions of this study.

In this study, Hunt's analytical solution and Ward & Lough's analytical solution for two-layered leaky aquifer system were used to estimate stream depletions due to shallow and deep groundwater pumping, and their differences were compared. Depending on the combination of the separation distance between the stream and the well, the transmissivity and the storage coefficient of the aquifer, and the leakage coefficient between the upper and lower layers, the stream depletion, which is the amount of stream water reduction compared to the amount of groundwater pumping, for each of 45,000 cases was calculated for both shallow and deep groundwater pumping, and the differences were analyzed quantitatively. When the leakage coefficient was very small, with a value of 10-61/d, the difference in the average five-year stream depletion due to the pumping of shallow and deep groundwater showed a large deviation of up to 0.9 depending on the given hydraulic characteristics; this value exponentially decreased as the stream depletion factor (SDF) increased. This exponential relationship gradually weakened as the leakage coefficient increased due to interaction effects between layers, resulting in a small difference of up to 0.2 when the leakage coefficient reached 10-31/d. Under the condition of greater interlayer hydraulic connectivity, there was little influence of the depth of groundwater pumping on the stream water reduction.

Material parameters such as surface chloride content, water permeability coefficient, chloride diffusivity and critical chloride content are a substantial key parameter for understanding the durability performance of concrete and its micro-structural densification. Over the past few decades, a considerable number of studies on the durability design for marine concrete structures have been carried out. However, the results are different to each other. In order to establish a consistent durability design system of concrete, it is a precondition to define material parameters, which affect deterioration of concrete due to chloride penetration. Such parameters are surface chloride content, chloride diffusivity, and critical chloride content. Usually these parameters are assumed as temporary constant values or obtained from the experimental results for short term. However, it is necessary to define these parameters reasonably, because these significantly influence the calculation of service life of concrete. In this paper, it is introduced to define material parameters of concrete for chloride diffusion, such as surface chloride content $[Cl]_s$, water permeability coefficient K, chloride diffusivity $D_{Cl}$, critical chloride content $[Cl]_{cr}$. These are expressed as time function considering hydration evolution of hardened cement paste. The definition of the material parameters is a prerequisite to simulate chloride penetration into concrete as time elapsed.
There has been outstanding research on the soil-water characteristic curves of unsaturated soils over the past several decades. Unfortunately, unsaturated soil mechanics has not been considered as an important factor in Korea. In this paper, laboratory test and numerical analysis(SoilVision Professional ver 3.04) were performed to investigate the prediction method of soil-water characteristic curve and unsaturated permeability coefficient in reclaimed ground. The pressure cell, desiccator, and tensiometor tests were conducted on three types of reclaimed soils(dredged soil, sand, weathered granite soil). Numerical analysis was executed to compare the results with the laboratory test results and also compared with the results of each prediction method. Based on the laboratory test, three different types of soils have shown different soil-water characteristic curves. The hysteresis fir these soils is clearly defined. As a result of numerical analysis, Fredlund & Xing's method and Fredlund & Wilson's model proved to worke out well for reclaimed ground soils in Korea. Also, predicting method based on the soil-water characteristic curves from the particle-size distributions is flirty reliable for estimating unsaturated permeability coefficient.

Soil-water characteristic curves (SWCCs), which represent a physical property in partially saturated soils, show the relation between volumetric water content and matric suction. The SWCCs exhibit hysteresis during wetting and drying, however experimental expressions used to describe SWCCs have generally ignored the hysteresis. In addition, the shape of SWCC may depend on the void ratio which is changed by soil skeleton deformations or hysteretic behavior under various loading conditions. Hence, it is necessary to understand, both empirically and analytically, the relationship between soil skeleton deformations and the SWCCs of various soils. The typical SWCCs experimentally have drying, wetting, and the second drying curve. The measurement of a complete set of hysteretic curves is severely time-consuming and difficult works, then the first drying curve of SWCC is generally determined to estimate the hydraulic conductivity and shear strength function of partially saturated soils. This paper presents the hydraulic-mechanical behavior of partially saturated soils (weathered soil and silty soil) for volume changes and hysteresis in SWCCs regarding the difference between the first drying and wetting curve.
Soils originated from limestone, located at the southern part of Kangwon province and Jecheon, Danyang of Chungbuk province are mainly composed of fine texture, have different properties from soils originated from granite and granite gneiss, especially for water movement. This study was conducted for making PTF(Pedo-Transfer Function) for Kfs(field saturaton hydraulic conductivity) estimation, and for investigating the relation between soil particle distribution and the infiltration and percolation rate in soils originated from limestone. Soils used for the experiment were 6 soils of Gwarim, Mosan, Jangseong, Maji, Anmi and Pyongan series. Infiltration and percolation rate for the soil were measured by a disc tension infiltrometer and a Guelph permeameter, respectively. The particle size distribution and organic matter content of the soils were analyzed. Kfs was not related with sand, silt, clay, and organic mattrer (OM) content because of forest soils which contained high gravel, pebble, and cobble content, and O layer with high OM content. After Mosan soil series and O layer of Gwarim series were excluded for the data analysis, Kfs was explained as a linear function with sand and clay content and a exponential function with OM content. As a result, the PTF equation was obtained as Kfs=-4.20558+0.479706*(S)+0.023187*exp(1.829*OM) ($R^2=0.6558^{*}$).
To evaluate a property of moisture distribution and volumetric water content on bentonite media the responses of complex dielectric constant were used which are measured by Frequency Domain Reflectometry with Vector Network Analyzer (FDR-V) system. The bentonite is widely used a barrier liner system in the waste disposal site, recently. In case of barrier liner system, generally, the coefficient of permeability should have to less than 10-7cm/sec. According to the results, the complex dielectric constants are increasing with increase the volumetric water content and temperature together. Also the variation of complex dielectric constant due to temperature gradient is confirmed that the moisture movements are increasing with the variations of temperature from high range to low range, which is represented the property of moisture distribution in the bentonite.

For a massive project related to building national industrial complexes on a soft ground applied to PVD after dredging and hydraulic fill, laboratory tests were carried out using undisturbed sample taken from various depth. Piezocone penetration and dissipation tests were carried out to assess horizontal coefficient of consolidation and initial stress in field. The ground consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer having both similar marine clays. It should be, however, considered as multi-layered soft ground having different initial void ratio, initial water content, initial effective stress, and permeability and compressibility with directions. To assess initial stress of those soft layers in which have different stress history related to consolidation, CPTu test results, especially excess pore water pressure, were analyzed. It allows to find out distribution of excess pore water pressure and initial stress inner original clay layer.
Soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) has been widely used to estimate the shear strength and coefficient of permeability for unsaturated soils. In general, it is divided into the drying path in which the water is discharged and the wetting path in which the water is permeated, and it has a hysteresis indicating different suctions at the same volumetric water content. In reality the field behavior of unsaturated soils is much closer to the wetting path during the infiltration. The drying path has been practically used for various analyses because obtaining the wetting path takes longer than the drying path. Although many approaches for estimating wetting path have been studied till now, these are complex and do not fit well. Therefore, a simple method for estimating wetting path based on empirical approach in this study is proposed in unsaturated soils, and a feasibility study is conducted as well.
This study analyzes the determination of slope failure model due to changes in ground condition followed by heavy rainfall. With a simulated rainfall system, the movement of a slope from the rainfall penetrating the unsaturated soil is investigated with respect to various conditions of pore-water pressure, earth pressure, and moisture content, considering rainfall duration and permeability. As a result of the experiment, under the persistent precipitation of 50mm/h, pore-water pressure of weathered granite soil started increasing from the upper position of the slope, and then the pressure increased in middle and bottom portion of it in timely manner. In case of the pore-water pressure of the standard soil, the pressure increased from the middle and bottom portion, and the cause of the different order is suspected to be the difference in permeability between the standard soil and the weathered granite soil. As an outcome, though the result may vary by each foundation, there exists a danger of slope failure not only when the cumulative rainfall is more than 120 mm but also when the saturation level amounts to 60~75%.
