In this paper, we suggest a new technique which employ the pipelined architecture for the implementation of the SAP adaptive filter using variable step size. According as SAP adaptive filter is sufficiently decomposed, a simplified SAP adaptive filter can be derived, and the weights of adaptive sub-filters can be updated by a simple formular without a matrix inversion. The convergence speed and the steady state error of the simplified SAP adaptive filter are improved by using variable step size. For practical implementation, the simplified SAP adaptive sub-filters are transformed by the pipeline technique.
In virtual endoscopy, it is important to produce high quality perspective images in real-time. However, it is more significant to devise a navigation method that can make a virtual camera move through in human cavities such as colon and bronchus without collision and let the user control the camera intuitively. We propose an efficient navigation method, which generates 2D depth map during rendering the current frame, then determines position and direction of camera using the depth information. It offers collision-free navigation and allows us to control the camera as we want. Also it does not require preprocessing step and additional data structures.

A numerical analysis has been conducted on the interaction of the thermal radiation and natural convection in a rectangular enclosure filled with a gray fluid. P-1 approximation is adopted for the radiative transfer and its application limit is examined. Considered are the Stark number effect, the optical thickness effect and the wall emissivity effect on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. As the Stark number increase or the optical thickness decreases, the boundary layer thickness and the flow velocity increase. Transition to turbulence is retarded with the increase of the radiation effect. When the optical thickness is one, the radiation effect is negligible for the Stark numbers larger than 10.

Gas-particle two phase flow and heat transfer in a cavity receiving thermal radiation through selectively transparent walls have been analyzed by a finite difference method. Particles injected from the upper hole of the cavity are accelerated downward by gravity and exit through the lower hole while they absorb, emit and scatter the incident thermal radiation. Gas phase is heated through convection heat transfer from particles, and consequently buoyancy induced flow field is formed. Two-equation model with two-way coupling is adopted and interaction terms are treated as sources by PSI-Cell method. For the particulate phase, Lagrangian method is employed to describe velocities and temperatures of particles. As thermal radiation is incident upon horizontally, radiative heat transfer in the vertical direction is assumed negligible and two-flux model is used for the solution of radiative heat flus. Gas phase velocity and temperature distributions, and particle trajectories, velocities and temperatures are presented. The effects of particle inlet condition, particle size, injection velocity and particle mass rate are mainly investigated.

In this paper, we estimate area-averaged solution of peening residual stress using a 3-D multi-impact symmetry-cell FE model. The symmetry-cell model includes factors reflecting peening phenomena and plastic shot. Area-averaged solution is much closer to XRD experimental solution than 4-node-averaged solution in plastic shot FE model. We then obtain FE Almen saturation curve corresponding to experimental Almen curve based on area-averaged solution. Using the curve, we obtain FE area-averaged solution in major peening materials, and compare the FE solution with experimental solution. In peening materials, surface, maximum compressive residual stress and deformation depth reach experimental solutions. Thus, FE Almen curve is useful for estimation of residual stress solution and could improve the efficiency of peening process. Consequently, it is confirmed that concept of area-averaged solution is the realistic analytical method for evaluation of peening residual stress.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to analyze the mechanical and leaf speed accuracy of the dynamic multileaf collimator (DMLC) and determine the appropriate period of quality assurance (QA). Materials and Methods : The quality assurance of the DMLC equipped with Millennium 120 leaves has been performed total 92 times from January 2012 to June 2014. The the accuracy of leaf position and isocenter coincidence for MLC were checked using the graph paper and Gafchromic EBT film, respectively. The stability of leaf speed was verified using a test file requiring the leaves to reach maximum leaf speed during the gantry rotation. At the end of every leaf speed QA, dynamic dynalog files created by MLC controller were analyzed using dynalog file viewer software. This file concludes the information about the planned versus actual position for all leaves and provides error RMS (root-mean square) for individual leaf deviations and error histogram for all leaf deviations. In this study, the data obtained from the leaf speed QA were used to screen the performance degradation of leaf speed and determine the need for motor replacement. Results : The leaf position accuracy and isocenteric coincidence of MLC was observed within a tolerance range recommanded from TG-142 reports. Total number of motor replacement were 56 motors over whole QA period. For all motors replaced from QA, gradually increased patterns of error RMS values were much more than suddenly increased patterns of error RMS values. Average error RMS values of gradually and suddenly increased patterns were 0.298 cm and 0.273 cm, respectively. However, The average error RMS values were within 0.35 cm recommended by the vendor, motors were replaced according to the criteria of no counts with misplacement > 1 cm. On average, motor replacement for gradually increased patterns of error RMS values 22 days. 28 motors were replaced regardless of the leaf speed QA. Conclusion : This study performed the periodic MLC QA for analyzing the mechanical and leaf speed accuracy of the dynamic multileaf collimator (DMLC). The leaf position accuracy and isocenteric coincidence showed whthin of MLC evaluation is observed within the tolerance value recommanded by TG-142 report. Based on the result obtained from leaf speed QA, we have concluded that QA protocol of leaf speed for DMLC was performed at least bimonthly in order to screen the performance of leaf speed. The periodic QA protocol can help to ensure for delivering accurate IMRT treatment to patients maintaining the performance of leaf speed.

Purpose: The maximum likelihood-expectation maximization (ML-EM) is the statistical reconstruction algorithm derived from probabilistic model of the emission and detection processes. Although the ML-EM has many advantages in accuracy and utility, the use of the ML-EM is limited due to the computational burden of iterating processing on a CPU (central processing unit). In this study, we developed a parallel computing technique on GPU (graphic processing unit) for ML-EM algorithm. Materials and Methods: Using Geforce 9800 GTX+ graphic card and CUDA (compute unified device architecture) the projection and backprojection in ML-EM algorithm were parallelized by NVIDIA's technology. The time delay on computations for projection, errors between measured and estimated data and backprojection in an iteration were measured. Total time included the latency in data transmission between RAM and GPU memory. Results: The total computation time of the CPU- and GPU-based ML-EM with 32 iterations were 3.83 and 0.26 see, respectively. In this case, the computing speed was improved about 15 times on GPU. When the number of iterations increased into 1024, the CPU- and GPU-based computing took totally 18 min and 8 see, respectively. The improvement was about 135 times and was caused by delay on CPU-based computing after certain iterations. On the other hand, the GPU-based computation provided very small variation on time delay per iteration due to use of shared memory. Conclusion: The GPU-based parallel computation for ML-EM improved significantly the computing speed and stability. The developed GPU-based ML-EM algorithm could be easily modified for some other imaging geometries.

In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for real-time lane detecting against luminance variation using morphological image processing and edge-based region segmentation. In order to apply the most appropriate threshold value, the adaptive threshold was used in every frame, and perspective transform was applied to correct image distortion. After that, we designated ROI for detecting the only lane and established standard to limit region of ROI. We compared performance about the accuracy and speed when we used morphological method and do not used. Experimental result showed that the proposed algorithm improved the accuracy to 98.8% of detection rate and speed of 36.72ms per frame with the morphological method.

In the HCI, hand gesture recognition is attracting attention as a method for interaction and information exchange between users and devices along with the development of IT devices. In hand gesture recognition through image processing, palm region detection is a key process contributing to improvement of processing speed and recognition rate. In this paper, we propose a new method for image segmentation between the hand and wrist for palm area detection. The anatomical characteristics of the hand are used to calculate the distance between the iliac bones of the thumb and little finger, which have the widest width, by the horizontal projection histogram of the hand image, and then the palm area is detected by drawing a circle having the width as the diameter. In order to verify the superiority of this method, multiple stage template matching is used to compare and evaluate recognition performance against the four conventional methods for 10 hand gestures. Note that the literatures to offer palm area detection performance evaluation are few although there are many studies on hand gesture recognition.
This paper proposes a method to insert virtual objects into a real video stream based on feature tracking and camera pose estimation from a set of single-camera video frames. To insert or modify 3D shapes to target video frames, the transformation from the 3D objects to the projection of the objects onto the video frames should be revealed. It is shown that, without a camera calibration process, the 3D reconstruction is possible using multiple images from a single camera under the fixed internal camera parameters. The proposed approach is based on the simplification of the camera matrix of intrinsic parameters and the use of projective geometry. The method is particularly useful for augmented reality applications to insert or modify models to a real video stream. The proposed method is based on a linear parameter estimation approach for the auto-calibration step and it enhances the stability and reduces the execution time. Several experimental results are presented on real-world video streams, demonstrating the usefulness of our method for the augmented reality applications.
