  • The objective of this research was to investigate the in vivo effects of treatment with mulberry extract complex (MEC) on cartilage degeneration and pain severity in an experimental model of rat degenerative arthritis. Monosodium iodoacetate ($2mg/50{\mu}L$) was injected into right knee joints of rats, followed by administration of MEC for 8 weeks at 400 mg/kg or 800 mg/kg of body weight. The experimental data show that treatment with MEC inhibited degradation of glycosaminoglycan and collagen in cartilage. On the other hand, concentrations of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein, C-terminal telopeptide-2, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-9, and MMP-13 in serum decreased in comparison with the control. The MEC at all dose levels could inhibit formation of xylene-induced ear edema. In this study, MEC demonstrated significant anti-arthritis activity, which is required for improvement of degenerative arthritis. Based on these results, MEC may be employed for the development of new health foods to ease symptoms of degenerative arthritis.

  • Many number of elderly people suffer from osteoarthritis, a degenerative arthritis. Korea is entering an aged society with a rapid increase in the elderly population. This increase in the elderly population has led to an increase in elderly osteoarthritis patients. Therefore, many elderly people are greatly hampered by the quality of life due to osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study is to clarify the risk factors of osteoarthritis and to investigate the relationship between negative emotional states and osteoarthritis. The results proved that demographic risk factors, anthropometric and biochemical factors, and health behaviors influence osteoarthritis. In addition, it was confirmed that negative emotions perceived by the elderly, such as depression and stress, should be regarded as main factors of osteoarthritis.

  • To observe the morphological changes and the expression of tenascin in synovium of human knee joint, between normal condition and degenerative arthritis, were processed by immunoelectron microscopic method. The results were summarized as follows. 1. In degenerative arthritis, the hyperplasia of synovial membrane was characterized by the increase of cell number in secretory synovial cells. 2. In normal condition, there was no marking of the immuno-gold for tenascin in synovial membrane. 3. In degenerative arthritis, the immuno-gold for tenascin were observed in endoplasmic reticulum of secretory synovial cells and extracellular matrix of synovial layer. On the basis of above findings, the hyperplasia of synovial membrane and the pathologic processes may be concerned with the increase of number of secretory synovial cells and of expression of tenascin, in degenerative arthritis.

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether Mulligan manual therapy and Physical therapy have effectiveness on the pain and muscle assessment questionnaire in female elders with osteoarthritis of the knee. Thirty subjects were participated in this study. And they were all randomly divided into Mulligan manual therapy and Physical therapy group. To evaluate the effects of Mulligan manual therapy and Physical therapy, subjects were evaluated by using visual analogue scale and muscle assessment questionnaire. The assessment parameters were evaluated before, after 2 weeks, and after 4 weeks treatments. And we received a consent form from Mulligan manual therapy subjects. The results of repeated measures analysis of variance showed that pain, strength, endurance, coordination/balance were significantly improved after than before therapy in Mulligan manual therapy group. So we conclude that Mulligan manual therapy has effectiveness on the pain and muscle assessment questionnaire in female elders with osteoarthritis of the knee.

  • This research is performed for the elderly patients who have knee osteoarthritis joint and who are applied to complex exercise program to know that how the complex exercise affects on pain and muscle activation. This research is tested 23 elderly patients who have knee osteoarthritis in hospital B. It divided into exercise group(n=2) and control group(n=1), by doing general physical therapy for each case three times a week, 40 minutes, among 10 weeks and measured before and after VAS and muscle activation. For the case exercise group, supplementally, applied to complex exercise program three times a week, 40 minutes, among 10 weeks and also measured before and after VAS and muscle activation. After the test is performed in 10 weeks, the results of this test are as follows. First, both exercise group and control group, they have more in pain after experiment rather than before, respectively(p<0.05). but There was no significant statistical difference between two groups(p>0.05). Second, exercise group have in muscle activation after experiment rather than before(p<0.05). and There was significant statistical difference between two groups(p<0.05). The test is implied that if the people who has knee osteoarthritis wants to get more good effects with complex exercise, they should get more opportunities to complex exercise. as well as fitness, resistance exercise and grafted to the easily create an exciting program to improve the quality of life of seniors in the program will be studied in future study.
