In Gomso Bay, on the west coast of Korea, the surface sediments sampled in 1991 and 2006 were analysed to identify the long-term variations of tidal flat sediments. Silt and clay contents have decreased in the bay-mouth tidal flats whereas sand and clay contents have decreased on the inner-bay and bay-head tidal flats over the last 15 year period. In particular, the clay contents of the tidal flats in 2006 were relatively low when compared to those of both tidal flats adjacent to other semi-enclosed bays and those of the tidal flats in 1991. The variations of textural compositions in the tidal flat sediments have led to changes of the sedimentary facies. It indicates that the changes must have been made by the changes of hydrodynamic conditions impacted by human activities, such as the construction of sea-walls, land reclamation, structures of farms constructed compactly near the low water line, and the Saemangeum dyke constructed in the northern part of the area where this research was conducted.

A study on the concentrations of total suspended matters (TSM) and their distribution pattern was conducted off the west coast of Tae-An Peninsula during the spring season. Especially non-destructive and fine-tuned analysis for the size-distribution of suspended matters was made using SPECTREX instrument. Water masses were characterized by the typical tidal front, with vertically homogenous coastal waters and the strong thermoclines on the offshore area. Concentrations of suspended matters were generally less than 10 mg/l, but the concentrations increased up to 25 mg/l at the bottom waters and mid-depth waters. Mean particle size of the suspended matters were generally 5-6$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 8-10$\mu\textrm{m}$ for the fine-grained suspended matters and the coarse-grained suspended matters, respectively. They are considered to be composed dominantly of detrital materials. On the coastal area, landward side of tidal front, bottom sediments can be easily resuspended by the strong tidal currents, and therefore, deposition of suspended materials are thought to be rather limited. On the offshore area, however, suspended sediments mostly supplied from the northern part of the present study area near Kyunggi Bay are thought to be transported southward and/or southwestward along the mid- depth layer of strong thermocline.

The first objective of this study was to investigate water pollution status of Meejae Reservoir, Kunsan, irregularly receiving river water for agricultural and recreational purposes. The second objective of the study was to compare nutrient pollution loads of three nutrient sources: sediment leaching, non-point sources and the receiving water. Water analysis results showed that eutrophication was a concern especially in summer and the calculated TSI (secchi depth), TSI (chlorophyll-a), and TSI (TP) were 53.6, 57.7 and 56.7, respectively. Although there was no significant difference in seasonal mean values of sediment T-N, sediment T-P and sediment organic content, mean differences were found for sampling points. However, T-N and T-P sediment release flux showed seasonal mean differences, while showing no mean difference for sampling points. Water T-N data proportionally correlated with sediment T-N and sediment organic content data, while no statistical correlation was found for water T-P data. Comparison of nutrient loads calculated from three sources showed that the highest T-N load was occurred from the receiving (pumped) water while T-P loads of the receiving water and sediment release flux were similar. The first solution would be considered for the receiving water to improve the water quality of Meejae Reservoir. Reduction of nutrient flux from the sediment would be then tried as the second alternative solution.
Mineral and geochemical analysis were conducted on two sections (~3.5 m) of red-brown claysilt sediments covering the gneiss and granite weathering zones in Suwon-si for establishing Quaternary paleoenvironmental changes in Korea. The sections were divided into four sedimentary layers (Unit 1-4) by vertical changes in mineral composition and chemical composition. The lowermost unit 1 was a sandy sediment with a high K-feldspar content with a significant contribution of weathered bedrock. Unit 2 was a transition layer showing intermediate characteristics. Unit 3 was a reddish brown clay-silt sediment, with a total clay content of 58% on average, and the main clay minerals were illite-smectite mixed layer minerals and hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite/smectite. Unit 3 contained almost no plagioclase, while the content of kaolin minerals derived by the plagioclase weathering was higher than in the other layers. Unit 4 had similar mineral composition and chemical properties to Unit 3, but had a higher content of plagioclase and chlorite and lower content of kaolin minerals. The chemical compositions of the sections were compared with those in other regions of Korea, suggesting the eolian origin of Units 3 and 4. The paleoenvironmental change in the sedimentary section of this region was interpreted as follows. Weathered products of gneiss and granite, which are bedrocks of this region, were eroded and deposited as sandy sediments in the periphery to form the lower layers (Unit 1, 2), followed by the deposition of the claysilty rich eolian sediments (Unit 3) during the glacial. Unit 3 was chemically weathered during the warm humid climate during the last interglacial, developing a reddish brown color. After that, a eolian sediment layer (Unit 4) was deposited during the last glacial.

This study reports depth-dependent elemental distribution and mineral abundance of the oceanic sediment sample (WP21GPC04) near the Mariana Trench collected during the WP21 expedition in 2021. The elemental distribution determined by μ-XRF shows no significant differences with varying depth, with an average SiO2 53.91 wt%, FeO 4.48 wt%, Al2O3 16.56 wt%, MgO 2.56 wt%, CaO 4.79 wt%, Na2O 3.52 wt%, K2O 5.48 wt%, similar to the average chemical composition of global subducting sediments (GLOSS). The mineral abundances analyzed using synchrotron XRD, however, vary with depth. While quartz, mica, and plagioclase were identified at all depths, chlorite was found at shallow depths, and zeolite group minerals, phillipsite and heulandite, showed a gradual change in phase fraction with depth. This suggests a change in sedimentation and alteration environments in the region, or the potential for coexistence emerges due to similar sediment stability. Overall, this study will provide a basis for the future investigations on the evolution of sedimentary environment near the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean and the phase distribution and the behavior of subducting oceanic sediments, which will affect the lithological and geochemical characteristics of the Mariana susduction system.
We introduce a new acoustic parameter for the classification of seafloor sediments from chirp sonar acoustic profiling data. The acoustic parameter is defined as a derivative of the unwrapped phase of the Fourier transform of acoustic profiling data. Consequently, it represents the characteristics of attenuation by dissipative dispersion in sediments. And we estimated acoustic properties by geoacoustic modeling using Chirp data obtained from the different sedimentary facies. Our classification results, when compared with the results of analysis of sampled sediments, show that the acoustic parameter discriminates sedimentary facies and bottom hardness. Thus the method in this paper is expected to be an effective means of geoacoustic modeling of the seafloor.
Mineral quantification was performed on sediments of the Ulleung basin by X-ray powder diffraction and the computer software based on Rietveld quantification method. The sediments are dominated by amorphous opal-A with quartz, feldspars, micas, clays, calcite, and pyrite. The opal-A shows iterative variation in abundance with increasing burial depth. In addition, the relative abundance of opal-A is coincident with abundance of organic carbon contents, indicating that the Ulleung sediment consists mostly of amorphous silica derived from organism in the pelagic environment. Upward increase in the abundance of opal-A is markedly shown in the cores located in the slope region. On the other hand, there is a distinct tendency that the abundance of calcite is inversely proportional to that of opal-A. This indicates that the abundance of opal-A increases during the rise of sea level. Also, the fall of sea level lowers the abundance of opal-A.
Drilled sediment core was acquired from Jinheung catchment which was located at Jeollabuk-do Jeongeup city. Elements concentration variation were studied by neutron activation analysis using sediment core by divided 1 cm depth interval. The concentration of major element such as Na, K were increased but Fe was decrease with depth. Minimum elements concentration and particle size were observed at 17 cm depth. This depth was considered 1969 year which was great dry year recorded from the rain fall data and the sedimentation rate was calculated $0.197g{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}year^{-1}$.
Laboratory investigations of physical (density and porosity), acoustic (velocity and velocity anisotropy), and electrical (resistivity and resistivity anisotropy) properties in deep-sea carbonate sequences at DSDPsites 288 and 289 in the western equatorial Pacific were made and correlated as a function of diagenesis. Profile of resistivity shows almost a mirror image of velocity indicating that electrical resistivity can be a useful variable to determine the diagenetic stage. Some fluctuations in acoustic and electrical properties near the zones of cherty and siliceous limestones for both sites imply significant changes in pore geometry due to interbedded silica. The significantly reduced pore throat size by the presence of silica which provides excess calcium carbonate to adjacent pore spaces is partly responsible for several jumps in acoustic and electrical properties of the zones. These observed geophysical data are interpreted as the result of silica diagenesis influencing carbonate diagenesis.
