This is the survey on the actual condition about the managing of headings in library cataloging. KCR4, the standard rules for the library cataloging in Korea, has no rules for the main entry headings and uniform headings. But the cataloging records are not standardized because a lot of libraries in Korea use the main entry headings and uniform headings yet. A structural revision of KORMARC is required in order that all library follow the rules on the KCR's main entry headings. And the rules for uniform heading used until KCR4's policy about the heading is decided according to international trends are needed.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a rational guidelines of authority record for heading controls. It analyzes the headings of AACR2R and KCR2. To efficient retrieval, It suggests distinction of different persons and different corporate bodies of the same name and subject list. It also investigates the problem sand suggests the possible improvements for control of headings. The rules for heading control retains the frame from headings of cataloging rules. The guideline for heading controls will be integrated in the rules for headings.

Locating function of a particular item is more of added entry than a main entry heading. This function was expanded especially in the machine readable cataloging by introducing the control number and standard bibliographic number. Assembling function of the main entry heading is on a level with that of cross reference and notes, added entries, uniform headings. Links among all variant forms of a heading in hypercatalog will be made for collocating of all publications of a given author. The link of bibliographic records in this catalog can be freed from the dependence on standardized heading form. The function of the catalog is not affected even though by abandoning the concept of main entry heading. Further efforts should be made to raise users' finding opportunities through expansion of acces points and linking devices among related records.

This study analyzed guidelines and instructions for access points representing works and expressions in RDA. The preferred title for the work is used as the basis for constructing an authorized access point to represent a work or expression. If applicable, the authorized access point is constructed by combining the preferred title for the work to the authorized access point for the identity with principal responsibility for the work. The variant titles for the work are used as the basis for constructing variant access points to represent a work or expression. If the authorized access point is constructed by combining the preferred title for the work to the authorized access point for the identity responsible for the work, the variant access points are constructed by combining the variant titles for the work to the authorized access point, and by using only the preferred title for the work. Besides, RDA provides instructions to construct the controlled access points for special works like musical works, laws, religious works and others, but the general principles for these works are same as the above instructions. The authorized access points for works and expressions in RDA are almost same as the main entry headings in AACR2.

In this paper we outline the evolving process of the cataloguing rules in Korea focused on the standardization. We analyzed the new and updated rules under the KCR4( Korean Cataloguing Rules, 4th edition) in terms of usability of the catalogue. Our findings can be summarized as follows: 1) Since there are the rules of the unlimited number of the statement of responsibility, the access point is expanded and may bring the high searchability as a result, 2) Since the rules of the general material designations are added, the catalogue users may easily identify the material, 3) Since the rules of the material specific details area are added, the catalogue users may easily understand the characteristics and other features of a publication, 4) The KCR4 seems a kind of the integrated cataloguing rules for diverse types of materials including the monographs, 5) Since the rules of choice and forms of the access point treated in the authority control, there seem some Problems in usability of the catalogue, 6) The concept of the uniform heading is eliminated which seems considered only for the convenience of the cataloguers not for usability of the catalogue.

This paper studied on problems and improvement method of description and headings in ${\ulcorner}Korean\;MARC\;on\;Disc\lrcorner$. By Korean MARC on Disc, it seems a great mistake that in abridged and full information, give the volumes next to statement of title and author. and even input copies of them respectively in case of multi-volume books. Also, frequently the essential abridged catalog information of a homonymic authors more than 10 which are written to Chinese are enumerated under one author name in Korean, using together with only one list. It is, therefore, effective and reasonable that Korean author headings be written to Korean language at first and be followed by Chinese, and then the subject of an author and the year of birth and death of author be indecated. For that, We should make out a conventional and reasonable subject heading list in advance to maintain the unity of subject, and build a exact authority database of Korean author name according to it.
