Infra-red earth sensors(IRES) are accommodated in a geostationary multi-functional satellite, which includes optical payloads for observing the earth, to provide pointing reference for the payloads. Even the slight pointing difference between the IRES and the payloads is so critical from the geostationary orbit that can degrade their imaging performance. Therefore, a dedicated support structure is required to guarantee the stability during the flight operation. This paper shows the design justification for the IRES support structure employed in the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite(COMS). It intends to give an overall design presentation and to justify that this design is compatible with all the requirements in terms of stiffness and strength as well as the stability.

Various perturbations by the sun, the moon and the earth itself cause a continuous change in nominal position of a geostationary satellite. In order to maintain the satellite within a required window, north-south station keeping for controlling inclination and right ascension of ascending node, and east-west station keeping for controlling eccentricity and longitude are required. In this paper, station keeping maneuver simulation for Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) was performed using COMS Flight Dynamics Software(FDS) and the results were analyzed. COMS performs weekly based east-west/north-south station keeping to maintain satellite within ${\pm}0.05^{\circ}$ at the nominal longitude of $128.2^{\circ}E$. In addition, COMS performs wheel off-loading maneuver twice a day to eliminate attitude error caused by one-solar wing in the south panel of the satellite. In this paper, station keeping maneuver considering wheel off-loading maneuver was performed and the results showed that COMS can be maintained well within ${\pm}0.05^{\circ}$ window using COMS FDS.

The launch of the COMS by using Ariane-5 launch vehicle is introduced. First, the COMS is introduced briefly, and then, the Ariane-5 launch vehicle is introduced including detail description of the improvement of Vulcain-1 engine of Ariane-5G to Vulcain-2 engine of Ariane-5ECA for 20% increase of thrust. Then, the launch process of the COMS is introduced. The COMS will be launched from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. After the final check at PPF the COMS is transferred to HPF in the same building for fueling, and it is integrated to the launch vehicle adaptor at HPF, too. Then, this assembly is transferred to Final Assembly Building. After the satellites to be launched together are integrated to the launch vehicle on the launch table in the Final Assembly Building, the launch table loaded with the launch vehicle is moved to the launch pad for launch. The events during the launch vehicle flight is also introduced.

The first geostationary satellite made by Korea, COMS, has the three different payload ; Meteorological sensor, Oceanographic sensor and Ka-band communication payload. There are Meteorological & Ocean Data Communication Subsystem(MODCS) and Telemetry, Command and Ranging Subsystem(TC&R) as other RF radiation sources. MODCS transmits and receives Meteo and Ocean measurement data from/to earth using L-band and TC&R using S-band. The Ka-band communication payload will provide high-speed multimedia services and communication services for natural disaster such as prediction, prevention, and recovery services in the government communications network.Ka-band beacon is for the earth antenna pointing and the experiment of rain fading. This paper gives the analysis results about the mutual radiation effect on Ka-band communication payload, Ka-band beacon, MODCS and TC&R. Up/Down link power and coupling factor including the geometrical position and distance of antenna, filter rejection and degradation factor due to the different polarization are considered. The results show MODCS and TC&R are compatible for Ka-band communication payload and Ka-band beacon does not interfere with MODCS and TC&R normal operation.
COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication, ocean and meteorological observations. It will be launched by ARIANE 5. Ka-band components are installed on South panel, where single solar array wing is mounted. Radiators, embedded heat pipes, external heat pipe, insulation blankets and heaters are utilized for the thermal control of the satellite. The Ka-band payload section is divided several areas based on unit operating temperature in order to optimize radiator area and maximize heat rejection capability. Other equipment for sensors and bus are installed on North panel. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. During the transfer orbit operation, satellite will be under severe thermal environments due to low dissipation of components, satellite attitudes and LAE(Liquid Apogee Engine) firing. This paper presents temperature and heater power prediction and validation of thermal control design during transfer orbit operation.
The COMS(Communication, Ocean & Meteorological Satellite)is the geostationary satellite which will be performing three main objectives such as meteorological service, ocean monitoring and Ka-band satellite communications. This paper presents the analysis of the electromagnetic radiated compatibility between COMS satellite and the ARIANE 5 launch vehicle. As a conclusion, a good level of confidence can be given at present time to demonstrate the compatibility between the spacecraft and the launcher, and vice versa. No threat has been identified regarding the other units powered during launch mode.

This paper describes operation plans for satellite communications system (SATCOM) which is consisted of Ka band communication payload, geostationary satellite control system and communication test earth station system for the communication, ocean and meteorological satellite system (COMS). Also this paper describes the communication service and mission plans by each system of the SATCOM, and configurations and functions of the system interface between each system. Especially this paper proposes operational items, functions and their configuration diagrams, touches their operational plans. This paper describes function definitions, configuration diagram and operation plans of the PCS )Payload Control System) for monitor and control of the communication payload and communication service network of the SATCOM.
The first geostationary satellite in Korea, COMS (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite), has been operating properly since its successful completion of the IOT (In Orbit Test). COMS MI (Meteorological Imager) acquires Earth observation images from visible and infrared channels. This paper describes a method to compute the degradation of the COMS visible detectors and the result of the degradation during the two years of the operation. The visible channel detectors' performance was determined based on the comparison between the instrument-based measurements and ROLO model-based values. The degradation rate of the visible channel detectors of COMS MI showed a normal condition.
In this paper, the preliminary EMC analysis process between the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) launch vehicles in the frequency range [1MHz-47MHz] is described. The launch vehicle Radiated Emission (RE) specifications have been compared to COMS satellite Radiated Susceptibility (RS) limits. The COMS RS limits are the RS qualification levels of COMS units during launch. The negative margins appear between land launch or soyuz launch vehicle RE and COMS RS. Then, if the land launch or soyuz is chosen by the customer, The tests should be performed at satellite level in order to demonstrate the compatibility with respect to launch vehicles specifications.

This paper presents the results of Ka band qualification model multiplexers for COMS Payload to be launched in 2008. These are the input and output multiplexers of the satellite transponder to use available frequency resources effectively and the diplexer of the satellite antenna to use the same reflector for both transmitting and receiving frequency bands, respectively. The input multiplexer with four frequency channels has four(4) independent channel filters which consist of an 8-pole elliptic band-pass filter for high frequency selectivity and a 2-pole equalizer for group delay equalization. For low insertion loss, mass and volume reduction, manifold type os employed for output multiplexer. E-plane T-junction is used for either splitting or combining a frequency band into two sub-bands. Asymmetric inductive irises are used to tune the receiving filter easily. The electrical performance and environmental test such as vibration test, mechanical shock test, thermal vacuum test and EMC test are performed and the results of all qualification model multiplexers are compliant to the requirement of each multiplexer. Followed by this qualification, the flight model equipment will be developed.
