  • In order to examine the mesh selectivity and optimum mesh size of trap nets for purple shell, Rapane venosa, the field experiments were carried out during Jun. 27 to 29, 2003 at the coastal area of Mal-Do, Kunsan, Jeonbuk province. The experimental fishing gears were used in two set of trap nets, which one set was consisted of 210 trap nets that were coverd with 35mm, 50mm and 65mm in mesh size. The analysis of mesh selectivity curve was done by Kitahara's method. The results obtained are summerized as follows : 1. The total number of catch by the experimental fishing of trap nets for purple shell was 1,682, and it was consisted of 1,268 purple shells (75.4%), 225 Glossaulax reiniana (13.4%), 113 green lings (6.7%) and 76 other fishes (4.5%). 2. The value of maximum 1/m on the mesh selectivity curve was estimated at 1.79. 3. The value of 1/m on the 50% selection range was estimated at 1.24${\sim}$2.72, and the selection width was 1.48.. 4. The optimum mesh size of trap nets for purple shell based on the catch prohibition shell height(50mm) was estimated 40.3mm, and the 50% selection range of shell height of purple shell was 50.0${\sim}$109.6mm.

  • Utricularia forms small, but complex carnivorous trap along the stem either in water or in soil depending upon species. The shapes and sizes of the traps, appendages, and trichomes are known to differ among aquatic, terrestrial and epiphytic species. In the present study, the morphology and microstructure of the trap in aquatic Utricularia japonica and terrestrial U. livida were examined using light and electron microscopy. The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of trap features between the aquatic and terrestrial species. The trap was found to be comprised of a thin walled bladder with numerous capitate trichomes, two-armed bifid and four-armed quadrifid glands in both species; however, the traps of the two species were different in size, and number and morphology of the trichomes and glands. Aquatic Utricularia was chlorenchymatous with chloroplasts distributed throughout the body, whereas the terrestrial species was translucent without plastids due to an adaptation to underground habitats. Furthermore, the former differed considerably in that the traps developed antenna and appendages around the entrance area. A peculiar trap entrance was also noted in U. livida, which exhibited radiating rows of various trichomes within funnel-shaped tissue. A large number of glandular trichomes covered the entrance area and door surface with four trigger hairs each in the aquatic form but only two in the terrestrial form. The glandular trichomes near the door secreted a large amount of mucilage that temporarily composed the velum in the U. japonica, however, it was not observed in the terrestrial species. All of the aforementioned features were highly related in their structure and function during carnivorous mechanism in Utricularia. The current findings provide important data for further comparison of the different life forms within Utricularia.

  • Difference of the entering and the escaping behaviour of shrimp(Palaemon pacificus) to the model traps were observed in accordance with netting materials, baits, type of traps and slope of flapper, and gathering responses were also investigated on the odour of bait extracts in the aquarium as the preliminary test. In order to investigate the difference in catch according to type and structure of traps those designated from A to E were made of iron frames and nettings. The type A was a conical shape with two entrances at its both sides and the others were square piller shape with one entrance at their upper surface(type B) or two entrance at their both ends(type C, D and E). However th type D and E were connected with flapper and the thye E was made by attaching iron frames of same height under the type D. The traps were prepared 10 each and so a total of 50 traps were used in the experiment at sea. The main species caught was Charybdis japonica, but Astroconger myriaster was also caught fairly. The catches of these species were significant in difference between the types of traps. That is, Charybdis japonica was caught more in type A, C and D than others and less in type B and E, and Astroconger myriaster was caught more in type A and D and less in type B and E. However the catch of Astroconger myriaster in type C, even if less than that in type A showed no significant difference with the other traps. The total catch of Charybdis japonica and Astroconger myriaster was almost same in order with the catch of Charybdis japonica. The type B and E seemed to be difficult in entering of fishes into them. However, the type A and C seemed to be easy not only in entering, but also in escaping. Especially, the type C showed more escaping. On the other hand, the type D seemed to be not so easy in entering of fishes as type A and C, but very difficult in escaping. Consequently, the escaping of fishes from the traps seemed to be more difficult in conical traps than any other traps. The catches might be influenced by the bait with bag compare to without bag and also the immersed time of traps into water for fishing.
