Theoretical statistics is a calculus based course. However, there are limitations to learn theoretical statistics when students do not know enough calculus techniques. Mathematical softwares (computer algebra systems) that enable calculus manipulations help students understand statistical concepts, by avoiding the difficulties of calculus. In this paper, we introduce mathematical software such as Maxima and Wolfram Alpha. To foster statistical concepts in theoretical statistics education, we present three examples that consist of mathematical derivations using wxMaxima and statistical simulations using R.

통계학의 방법론과 이론을 교수 및 연구해온지도 벌써 오랜세월이 지났지만, 한국통계학이 이론적(수리적)인 연구가 정착되지 못한 이유는 여러가지가 있겠지만, 발표자가 지적하였듯이 수리통계 학자들의 궁핍 등의 이유를 들 수 있겠다. 60년대 몇몇 대학만이 통계학과를 운영해 오고 있었으나, 70년대 들어와서 전국 각대학(교)에 통계학과의 설치인가를 받아 활발히 통계학과의 기초를 닦고 있는 현시점에서 앞으로 이론 통계학 분야의 중요성과 필요성을 발표자가 피력함으로써 이론 통계학의 중요성을 재인식시키는데 큰 도움을 줄 것이다. 통계적 이론의 바탕이 발전되어야, 이를 기반을 둔 통계적 방법 및 응용 또한 발전이 따르기 마련이기 때문이다. 추상적인 이론이라 하여, 그것을 우리는 배격할 필요는 없다. 아무리 추상적인 이론이라 할지라도 그 바탕은 간단한 문제에서 출발하고, 그 추상적인 결과 역시 여러 분야에 응용되고 있지 않는가\ulcorner 예를 들면, 수학에 있어서 위상수학은 추상적인 분야라는 사실은 너무나 잘 알고 있다. 이것 또한 수직선을 기초로 두고 생각을 했고, 그 결과 추상적 이론이 수없이 전개되어 오고 있다. 이 추상적인 이론이라 할지라도 물리학, 공학 및 경제학 등에 응용되고 있음은 어느 누구도 부인할 수 없을 것이다. 그러므로 통계학에서 이론 통계분야의 중요성과 필요성을 지적한 점은 그 의의가 크다 하겠다. 이 중요성과 필요성을 재인식함으로써 우리나라의 이론 통계학분야의 사고를 더욱 발전시켜 기초과학으로써의 기반을 튼튼하게 해야할 것이다.

This study suggests some ideas for improvement of mixing classification and illogical subdivisions arrangement of Statistics in Social Science and Mathematical Statistics in Natural Science on KDC. We investigate the characteristics, educational system, and curriculum of Statistics in Korea. Besides, we compare and analyze classification systems such as KDC, DDC, LCC, NDC and Research Fields Code by National Research Foundation of Korea. As a result, Statistics in Social Science is relocated and integrated with the subfield of Natural Science according to the academic background. Existing social statistics topics are subdivided into statistical research methods complementing social science research methods. The heading 'Probabilities, Statistical mathematics' in Natural Science is changed to 'Statistics', and the subdivisions are expanded and revised.

최근에 들어서 개인용컴퓨터가 대중화되고 통계처리를 위한 컴퓨터 소프트웨어들을 쉽게 이용할 수 있게 됨에 따라 치의학연구에 있어서도 컴퓨터를 이용한 자료의 통계적 분석이 증가되고 있으며 그 방법도 갈수록 복잡하고 다양해지고 있다. 따라서 오늘날 급속히 발전하는 새로운 치의학지식의 습득을 위하여 치의학잡지에서 증가되고 있는 통계적 분석방법을 이해하고 평가할 수 있는 통계학지식이 요구된다. 이에 저자는 1975년,1980년 그리고 1986년에 발행된 5종류의 치의학잡지에서 보고된 논문에서 통계학방법의 종류와 빈도 그리고 통계학방법의 경향을 조사하여 치의학분야의 통계학교육에 필요한 통계학방법을 제시하고자 하였다.

진보된 수리적 통계이론의 발전과 이의 실용을 위한 통계적 처리방법의 개발이 신속히 이루어지고 있는 것이 현대통계학의 추세이다. 이에 부합되는 통계학 교육을 위하여는 우리의 통계학 교육의 현황을 분석하여 이를 토대로 체계적인 교육을 추구하여야 할 것이다. 국내대학에 통계학과가 설립된 이래 교수의 부족, 통계학에 대한 인식의 부족 등에도 불구하고 통계학 교육은 꾸준한 발전을 계속하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 대다수의 통계학과가 설립된지 오래지 않아 교육과정에 대한 검토와 연구가 부족했던 것이 사실이다. 한편, 국내 통계학과들은 경상계 대학과 자연계 대학에 소속된 학과들로 대별될 수 있다. 이러한 점과 함께 교수의 부족, 교육시설의 빈곤으로 인하여 전체적으로 교육과정의 공통성이 결여되어 있으며 실용적인 면의 교육에 소홀한 경향이 있다. 따라서 통계학 교육의 체계적인 확립과 발전을 위하여 교육과정의 모형이 절실히 요구된다고 할 수 있다. 본 보고서에서는 (1) 대학원 통계학 교육의 예비단계로서의 학부교육과 (2) 사회에서 요구하는 통계전문가의 양성을 위한 교육으로 구분하여 각 경우에 적합한 교육과정의 모형을 제안함으로써 각 대학에서의 교육과정 편성에 도움을 주고자 한다.

Four statistics books, one translated by statisticians and three by non-statisticians, are reviewed. They are reviewed in terms of indices and bibliographies, statistical theory and terms, and the history of statistics. In addition, book review articles appeared in daily newspapers are considered. Unfortunately, we can find many(some of them trivial, and some others serious) problems in the translations. Many problems could have been got around if the books had been translated by statisticians. So, conclusion suggested in this article is very simple: Translation of statistics books, especially books for the laymen, is a job that Korean statisticians should not shift to others.
