The effect of compost to force the cultivation using various soil and vegetation was investigated 5 times in the field for 4 years. Sewage sludge compost was validated to be useful fertilizer for the growth of a plant. and the optimal amendment amounts of compost to soil depended on the kinds of soil and vegetation, and the organic contents of compost. In the case of compost with high organic content. the optimal amended compost weight was 0.12t/are in fertile-dark brown(eutrophic) soil, 0.2t/are in sandy soil(trophic) and 0.4t/are in infertile-dark brown(oligotrophic) soil, respectively. In the case of compost with low organic content. on the other hand, the amentments of compost up to 0.6t/are was allowable without negative effect on the applied vegetation. Consequently, it can be believed that the sewage sludge compost is useful fertilizer, if keep the optimal amendment amounts(0.4t/are. year) to improve soil on cultivation of vegetation.
BACKGROUND: Estimation of soil nitrogen supply is essential to manage nitrogen fertilization in arable land. In Korea, nitrogen fertilization is recommended based on the soil organic matter content because it is difficult to assess nitrogen (N) mineralization of upland soils directly. In this study, the relationship between soil organic matter (SOM) content and N mineralization was investigated to explore the limitation of using SOM in predicting soil N mineralization. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil samples from the 0 to 10 cm depth were collected from 18 individual pepper cultivated fields in Tae-an and Chung-yang provinces before fertilization. N mineralization in the soils was quantified using incubation for 70 days at $30^{\circ}C$. The mineralizable soil N (MSN) was positively correlated with SOM, and the relation equation between MSN and SOM was '$MSN(kg\;10a^{-1})=0.2933{\ast}SOM(g\;kg^{-1})+0.0897$ ($r^2=0.6224$, p<0.001)'. However, the differences of N mineralization among the soils with the similar concentrations of soil organic matter were about 3 to 4.6 times, suggesting that the other soil factors such as total N concentration or EC should affect N mineralization. CONCLUSION: We concluded that SOM alone could not reflect the capacity of soil to supply N that is used for recommendation of N fertilization rate. Therefore, other soil properties should be considered to improve N fertilization management in arable land for sustainable agriculture.
To investigate a fertility status of upland soil, the soil were sampled at 854 sites chosen in consideration of areal distribution percent on the basis of topography and were analyzed on pH, organic mater, available phosphorus ($P_2O_5$), exchangeable potassium and calcium and magnesium. The content of soil chemical properties showed pH 5.6, organic mater $24g\;kg^{-1}$, available $P_2O_5$$577mg\;kg^{-1}$, exchangeable potassium and calcium and magnesium were 0.85, 4.5, $1.4cmol^+kg^{-1}$, respectively. The distribution percent of soil samples within the optimum range for cropping were 13.4% for pH, 46.7% for organic matter. 27.4% for available $P_2O_5$, 10.7, 15.8, 18.3% for exchangeable potassium and calcium and magnesium, respectively. In chronological changes of soil properties, exchangeable calcium and magnesium were ignorable ; pH was slightly decreased ; organic matter was slightly increased ; available $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable potassium were greatly increased.
Forest soil fertility was evaluated through the approach of numerical method. In this study, the soil chemical properties analyzed for 35 different soil series as table 2 were cited in numerical analysis. Minimum contents of essential nutrients in the surface soil for a satisfactory growth of tree in the plantation were evaluated by comparing with Wild's standard as table 1. Demanding level of fertilization were evaluated by using the formula 1 as table 5. Similar relation of soil chemical properties between soil series were calculated through formula 2, and then classified into 5 groups in soil chemical properties. 1. General chemical properties of surface soil in case of 35 soil series. About 40 percent of 35 different soil series are less than 2 percent in organic matter, 10 ppm in available phosphorus, 1.25m.e/l00g in exchangeable calcium and 0.5m.e/l00g in exchangeable magnesium. Generally, shortage of exchangeable potash are not found. CEC less than 10m.e/l00g are in two thirds and strong acid soil less than PH 5.5 are in about four fifths. 2. Soil series requested or not the fertilization are indirectly evaluated from the formula 1 using the relative figure of chemical components of CEC, OM and MgO. Through this analysis, 8 different soil series have very poor quality in soil chemical capacity so that demands highly the fertilization. On the other hand, other 13 different soil series group have not been thought to need the fertilization according to chemical guality. 3. By the results comparing the similarity of chemical properties of forest soil, it is thought to be suitable that the forest soil fertility are divided into 5 groups as follows: 1. Low CEC soil 1-1 Low organic matter soil less than 2 percent 1-2 Medium organic matter soil less than 4 percent 2. High CEC and organic matter soil 2-1 Low magnesium soil 2-2 High magnesium soil 3. High magnesium and calcium soil as lime stone.
A total of 112 soil samples collected from polluted and unpolluted areas in Korea were investigated for physical properities (such as soil moisture, organic matter and soil pH) and biological properties (such as microbial numbers). The results of organic matter and soil pH showed a great variation(p=0.01) in the four areas, whereas soil moisture and organic matter were similar among three plant vegetations. There was a significant relationship(p=0.01 or 0.05) between soil pH and microbial number These results imply some variations in soil environment and may lead to unfavorable changes of plant vegetation in soil. Presumably, the above results appear to be resulted from soil acidification caused by an acidic rain.

The management of soil organic matter(SOM) is a key component of golf course green maintenance. As part of a major project examining the sustainable management of SOM on golf course greens, the SOM status of different age greens maintained in the same root zone composition and management were compared. Then the microbial activity, tiller number, bulk density, water content, pH, EC, and T-N in the soil were measured. In the 0${\sim}$5cm depth SOM accumulation showed no significant difference between greens. Below 5cm SOM showed a strong significance between greens and had a positive(+) correlation with year and negative(-) correlation with depth. when regression equations were used to predict SOM accumulation with year and depth, SOM below 5cm tended to increase with a rate of 0.061% . year$^{-1}$ and decrease with a rate of 0.079% . $cm^{-1}$(R2==0.841). Soil microbial activity was investigated with age and depth by using a dehydrogenase assay. Results showed a sharp drop with depth in all greens. The soil microbial activity below 5cm showed no difference between greens. The accumulated SOM below 5cm may be very resistant to decomposition in the long-term. Five years after establishment, the bulk density did not significantly change. The water content, EC, and T-N had a significant correlation with SOM. The pH decreased with the year, which may influence SOM accumulation. Organic matter accumulation was mainly affected by the pH decrase, low soil microbial activity, and high organic matter resistant to decomposition, but the effects of water content, EC, and T-N were obscure.
The adsorption and leaching of organophosphorus pesticide, EPN (O-ethyl-O-4 -nitrophenyl phenyl phosphonothioate) were investigated in Namwon soil(black volcanic soil), Aewol soil(very dark brown volcanic soil) and Mureung soil(dark brown nonvolcanic soil) in Cheju Island. The residue of EPN was surveyed on coastal environment of Cheju in Aug. 1996. The organic matter of Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil was 19.8, 6.2 and 2.4%, respectively. The cation exchange capacity of Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil was 24.8, 13.0 and 9.5 meq/100 g, respectively. The Freundlich constant, k value, was 89.4, 26.9 and 9.25 for Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil, respectively. The k value of Namwon soil with very high organic matter content and cation exchange capacity was the highest for Aewol soil and Mureung soil. The Freundlich constant, 1/n, show a high correlation with organic matter content, i.e. it is less than unity for organic matter rich soil of Namwon soil and greater than unity for organic matter poor soil of Mureung soil. The leaching of EPN was slower for Namwon soil with high k values, and faster for Mureung soil with low k values. The results of the study was demonstrated the potential of pollution for EPN have little leached into soil environment. EPN was not detected in seawater and sediment in the coastal environment in Cheju Island. EPN used in the farm on tile Cheju island were not residued in the coastal environment.

This study investigated the effects of oil dose and soil texture on the analysis results for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in artificially oil-contaminated soils. The same amount of diesel was mixed with soils having different soil texture, and soil TPH concentrations were then analyzed for comparison. Presence of clay in the soil showed lower soil TPH analysis results than that of sand only. As the clay content was increased in the soil, the lower soil TPH concentration was obtained by incompleteness of solvent extraction. As the organic matter content in soil was increased from 5.2% to 10% (weight basis), a higher concentration of TPH was obtained by TPH analysis. However, at a higher organic content in the soil, 18%, resulted in a lower TPH concentration than those of 5.2% and 10%. Gasoline dose to the soil resulted in a significantly low TPH concentration due to the volatilization of gasoline while soil mixing and analysis. This study results would provide fundamental information either to the expectation of TPH concentration in artificially oil-contaminated soil or to estimation of oil release in the real oil-contaminated site.
In order to determine the effects of bedrock, organic matter, calcium and iron oxide on the soil aggregation, this research has performed with soils from bedrock regions of Limestone, Granite and Granite gneiss. This research was also to estimate how organic matter, calcium and iron oxide influence on soil aggregation under different forest conditions in various bedrock regions. And it also had a purpose to rate physical factors relevant to soil aggregation, their characteristics and aggregate diameter which closely relates to stabilities in the process of soil erosion. The following conclusions have been drawn in response to the overall research objectives. The rates of the soil aggregation on different bedrock regions were 21% in Limestone bedrock, 19.8% in Granite bedrock and 9.9% in Granite gneiss bedrock. A main factor in soil aggregation was the orgainc matter content in soils and the rate of soil aggregation increased in the constant proportion with the organic matter content. The relation could be formulated into Y=4.31X-4.37(Y : aggregation ratio X : organic matter content). The soil aggregation ratio under the deciduous forests eras higher than that under the coniferous forests. It was considered that this resulted from differences in organic matter content. Soil aggregates with larger diameter than 0.5mm were found more in Limestone bedrock than other smaller size soil aggregates of 0.25mm diameter were more distributed in Granite gneiss bedrock. Granite bedrock region had normal distribution in soil aggregate sizes with the highest frequency of 0.5mm diameter. Calcium and iron oxides had only partial influences on the soil aggregation in some specific conditions. But in Limestone bedrock region calcium influenced on the soil aggregation with the organic matter content.
In order to study the effects of some chemical components of surface soils on the paddy yield in clayey Whadong series developed on old alluvium, NPK fertilizer experiments conducted from 1966 to 1969 were reviewed and discussed, and the results may be summarized as follows. 1. The paddy rice production of Whadong series without fertilizers varied from 156kg to 719kg per 10a. 2. The paddy yields in Whadong series were associated mainly with the contents of organic matter and available phosphorus in surface soils, but not with those of exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg and cation exchange capacity. 3. The contents of organic matter in these soils more effected in the paddy yield than those of phosphorus did. 4. In case less than 2.0% or more than 3.0% of organic matter in surface soils the effect of phosphate application was appreciable. The effect, however, was not recognized from 2.0 to 2.9% of organic matter. And the following suggestions were able to make. a. In case of less than 2.0% of organic matter, the effect was considered to be due to deficiency of available phosphorus in the soil. b. In case of more than 3.0% of organic matter, the greater effect was considered to be due to inhibition of P uptake even in higher P contents in soil. c. Consequently, correlation study of P testing in paddy soil should be limited to the soils which contains less than 2% of organic matter. d. If the contents of organic matter in paddy soils were above 3.0%, the effect of P application was considerable and considered to be due to inhibition of nutrient uptake. Accordingly, it is considered that only the increased application of P does not improve the production of paddy in such soils.
