A new demand for vegetable peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Korea has increased farmers interest in growing vegetable peanut. Compared to grain peanut production, vegetable peanut production enables the growth period to be shortened by 20 or 30 days and farmers to adopt various cropping systems and to return crop residues in the soil. With the purpose of establishing desirable cropping systems for sustainable vegetable peanut production, three field experiments were conducted from 2000 to 2001 at Milyang, the southeastern part of Korea. Main focuses were given into the effect of cropping systems for vegetable peanut production on each crop's yield and soil sustainability. The cropping systems investigated were single vegetable peanut, peanut-radish-green barley, peanut-barley, and peanut-garlic cropping system, with or without crop residue incorporation in the soil. Among the cropping systems investigated for sustainable vegetable peanut production, peanut-only and peanut-radish-green barley cropping systems showed vulnerable to diseases and lodging while peanut-barley and peanut-garlic cropping systems showed higher stability in response to diseases and lodging, consequently leading to higher yield potential of vegetable peanut production. In the peanut-barley cropping system, both barley and peanut residues returned to the soil played an important role in soil improvement as well as in significantly increased grain yield of peanut and barley. A particular notice was taken to the pronounced increase in Trichoderma population and the amount of nitrogen mineralization induced by the returned barley residue. Soil structure, compactness, pH, and fertility were positively influenced by the returned crop residues, which apparently increased sustainability in vegetable peanut production systems.

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of organic materials commonly used for rice culture on the soil chemical properties and yield and quality of rice. Treatments were applied on the surface layer after rice planting and included: A) Kumsugangsangold, commonly used as a nutrient source for organic rice culture in Chonnam province (compost I), B) Rice bran, containing large quantities of vegetable ingredient (compost II), C) Chamdalkom, manufacturing by-product fish (compost III), and D) Hangawi, mixing anmimal and vegetable ingredients (compost IV). Seasonal N-mineralization rate was faster on the compost I and III with lower C:N ratio than those of the compost II and IV. Soil chemiceal properties were not significantly affected by treatments. Seasonal organic matter was higher on the compost II and IV with high input of the organic materials than those of compost I and III, which would affect the level of biomass C. Higher rice yield treated by compost I was observed in year 1, but no significant difference was observed in years 2 and 3.
The effect of application rate of pig or chicken manure on the seasonal change of tomato(Minicarol) rhizosphere microflora was investigated by field experiment were surface soil(16cm) mixed with manures 1 weeks before transplanting. 1. Rhizobacteria population of control plot decreased 5 weeks after transplanting(WAT) than 1 WAT and 1.5~2 times higher colony counting was found in DNB(Diluted nutrient broth medium) than NB(Nutrient broth medium) at 15 WAT. 2. Rhizobacteria population at 1 WAT inereased in NB medium with the application rate of both manures but decreased in DNB with chicken manure. Colony counting in NB of 60 and 120 mg/ha treatment was 100 times higher than that of the control. However, rhizobacteria in DNB at 15 WAT(harvest stage) was much higher than that of NB. 3. Application rate did not affect fungi population 1 WAT in pig manure but decresed in chicken manure. At 15 WAT fungi population was 2 times higher than 1 WAT with chieken manure and highest in 30 mg/ha but with pig manure decreased with rate than the control. 4. Actinomycetes population at 1WAT was not different among pig manure rates and decreased with chicken manure than control. At 15 WAT population increased in all manure rates. especially in 10 mg/ha pig manure and 30 mg/ha chicken manure 4 times that 1 WAT.
A pot experiment was conducted to find out the effects of lime and phosphate application on the changes of number of soil microorganisms, indigenous Rhizobium japonicum, nodule formation, and ureide-and amide-N in leaf and stem exudate of soybean plant under uncultivated hillside red earth in very low pH value, organic matter, available phosphate, and cation exchange capacity. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The plant height, stem length, root dry weight and nodule weight were significantly increased with the application of lime and phosphate application than that of control plot. 2. The concentration of amide-N in soybean plant at the 45 days after sowing was obtained as high in order of control>lime> lime+phosphate while the concentration was obtained in order of Iime+phosphate>lime> control at flowering stage 3. However, concentration of ureide-N in the soybean leaf at the 45 days after sowing was obtained as high in order of control>lime>lime+hosphate while reversed concentration was obtained in stem. 4. The number of soil microorgan isms were increased with increase of pH value, available phosphate and soil exchangeable cation. 5. Significantly negative high correlation were obtained with the concentration of Al, Fe in soil and the concentration of amide-and ureide-N in soybean plant at flowering stage while positive correlation was obtained with plant growth and the concentration of ureide-N.
To investgate growth effect of tomato by Bacillus sp. WRD-1 isolated from soil, the Bacillus sp. WRD-1 cultures were treated into tomato cultivated soil with different dilutions (1:100, 1:300, and 1:500) and autoclaved Bacillus cultures as control. Growth and yeild of tomato enhanced in treatments of the Bacillus cultures compared to control. The populations of native bacteria and actinomyces were increased twice in field treated with Bacillus sp. WRD-1 cultures, but the number of mold was decreased. Since the Bacillus sp. WRD-1 promoted growth of tomato and affected population dynamics of microorganism in field, this strain is prominent candidate as a microbial biocide to improve soil potential.
This study was carried out to evaluate the possibllity of composting from cow manure using earthworms. In order to rear earthworms safely and control moisture soil was used as conditioner. Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium sp.1 were isolated from soil and two isolates of Bacillus sp. were selected as antagonists from earthworm casts. By rearing earthworm, C/N ratio was reduced by 40.9% and 41.9% after 28 days, reducing sugar was also decreased by 37.1% and 37.5%. On the other hand, reduction of C/N ratio in cow manure alone was 9.67% and reducing sugar was 12.01%, respectively. Bacillus sp. was apparently increased in earthworm casts than in ordinary soil. It seemed that the earthworm casts contained antibiotic subatance.
This experiment was focused on finding out the potential problems in organic farming system, which is recently emphasized on the produce of horticultural crops due to the serious environmental deterioration. Thus, in this study, the effect of the application of organic farming materials in soil on plant growth and components of chinese cabbage and the soil Physicochemistry property were compared with conventional culture. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The effect of soil chemical properties after application of organic farming materials, The amounts of pH and O.,M. in N, P, K treated plot were few of change, To the contray, fermentation compost and microorganisms fermentation compost treated plot were some increase, Amount of P$_2$O$_{5}$ , Ca and increase in comparison with the N, P, K treated plot, Specially chicken manure+ microorganisms fermentation compost treated plot was the highest. 2. Change of soil microbial after application of organic farming materials, The number of bacteria and actinomycetes in N, P, K treated plot were appeared definite direction, to the fermentation compost and microorganisms fermentation compost treated plot showed the increased tendency, specially, chicken manure+ microorganisms fermentation compost treated plot was the highest, 3. The growth characteristic of chinese cabbage after application of organic farming materials was superior in order of chemical fertilizers plot> microorganisms fermentation compost plot> fermentation compost plot. It shows the NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ accumulation in chinese cabbage was higher in the outer leaves than in the inner leavess. It was some lower in the microorganisms fermentation compost plot, it was the highest at chemical fertilizers plot , all inner and outer leaves.
Large patch, caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 IV, is a soil-born disease that is the most important of warm season turfgrass such as zoysia and Bermuda grass. This study was conducted to analysis of the soil microbial community structure on large patch. Center of the large patch (CLC), edge (CLE) and healthy (CLH) part of microbial communities were examined using metagenomics in Phylum level. Distribution trends of the rhizosphere microorganisms were similar to the order Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospira, Cyanobactria and Verrucomicrobia in soil collections. Contrastively Actinobacteria was more 56% abundant in healthy part soil (16%) than in the center (9.28%) or edge (10.84%) parts. Taxonomic distributions were compared among the CLC, CLE and CLH, total 6,948 OTUs were detected in the CLC, 6,505 OTUs for the CLE and 5,537 OTUs were detected in the CLE. Distributions of Actinobacteria OTUs were appeared 615 OTUs in the CLC, 709 OTUs in the CLE and 891 OTUs in the CLH. Among Actinobacteria, 382 OTUs were overlapped in the all soils. Not matched OTUs of CLH (286 OTUs) was detected 23 times higher than CLC (91 OTUs) and CLE (126 OTUs).

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of swine liquid manure(SLM) and phosphorus fertilizer from September, 1998 to July, 1999 on the soil fertility on Italian ryegrass field, Cheju volcanic ash soil. pH(lst investigated), Mg (2nd investigated) and Cu content (2nd investigated) on soil grown by Italian ryegrass were significantly increased by an increase of fertilizer P(P
This study was carried out to investigate the change of rhizosphere microflora in paddy soils of long-term application of same fertilizer by single cropping. Treatments consisted of no fertilizer, NPK, PK, NK, NP and NPK + compost and the same fertilizer has been applied to the soil of each treatment for thirty five years. Any remarkable difference of the microbial population structure was not detected from the rhizosphere of Hwayeongbyeo and that of Hwasambyeo. However, slight difference of dominant microbial species in the rhizosphere was recognized between different fertilization practice. The bacterial population in the rhizosphere was steadily reduced over time after rice plant setting out, while actinomycetal population was increased over time. The increase of actinomycetal population was the highest in the NPK + compost treatment, suggesting the effect of organic matters in the change of actinomycetal population. As for the aerobic culturable bacterial diversity, Bacillus megaterium, B. mycoides, B. licheniformis and B. subtilis were dominants in genus Bacillus, and Streptomyces spororaveus, S. canus, S. tauricus and S. galbus in genus Streptomyces and genus Micromonospora was another dominant in actinomycetes.
