  • This study was conducted to evaluate the degradation, adsorption and desorption and leaching of acetamiprid in soils. The half-life of acetamiprid in field condition was $1.7{\sim}3.3$ days in Bokhyun soil and, in case of laboratory condition, 15.5 days. Adsorption of acetamiprid was equilibrated in 12 hours incubation. In adsorption experiment using modified soils, such as oxidized soil, oxidized soil added humic acid, fulvic acid, kaolinite or montmorillinite, adsorption rate of acetamiprid was the highest in the oxidized soil added fulvic acid. The desorption rate was the lowest in the oxidized soil added fulvic acid. The adsorption and desorption results should be suggested that acetamiprid could be strongly adsorbed with soil humic materials, especially fulvic acid. When the mobility of acetamiprid in soil was calculated according to GUS (Groundwater Ubiquity Score) equation, it was prove to non-leacher, and it was confirmed in the leaching experiment with soil column. Most of acetamiprid was remained in the upper 30 cm of the soil column after eluting with water and it was not even detected in leachate.

  • The mechanisms and metabolic products involved in the degradation of an organophosphate insecticide, diazinon, were studied in submerged paddy soil under the laboratory condition at $30^{\circ}C$. Diazinon abatement in non-sterilized soil was more rapid than indicating microbial participation in diazinon in soil. One-half of the original applications was lost in 2 days and less than 5% remained after 7 days. During the same period, dizinon applications increased tha microbial populations in accordance with the monooxygenase and esterase activities in soil. These results suggest that the microbiological factors develop in soil following diazinon application. The esterase and monooxygenase-catalyzing degradation products of diazinon were isolated and tentatively identified by mass spectrometryas 2-isopropyle-6-methyl-4-hydroxy pyrimidine, diazoxon, hydroxydiazinon, and sulfotep.

  • Three aminothio derivatives of carbofuran including carbosulfan, furathiocarb and benfuracarb were subjected to the degradation study in soils to investigate how fast and efficiently carbofuran would be evolved from them. Carbofuran was rapidly released from the derivatives in soils as the carbamoyl nitrogen-sulfur bond cleaved. Their degradation rates in soils, with half-lives of $23{\sim}68$ hours, were largely affected by structures of aminothio moieties and soil moisture conditions. Conversion rates into carbofuran ranged from 64 to 84% in soils on the basis of parent compounds 5 days after treatment. Application of aminothio derivatives led to less drastic increase in the carbofuran level in soils than when carbofuran was applied as such, and hence this might result in lower side effects in situ.

  • The herbicide molinate has been detected with high frequency in the main river during the growing season in Korea. To elucidate the exposure of molinate in agricultural environment, the persistence and the degradation characteristics of molinate were investigated in paddy ecosystems. The half-lives of molinate were 4.1 days with soil aquatic system, and 4.2 days in only aquatic system. Initial dissipation rate of molinate in water was greater with soil aquatic system than that of only aquatic system. Photolysis of molinate was occurred about 31.0% of molinate treated in pure water, when irradiated at 5,530 $J/cm^2$ by the xenon lamp, but its hydrolysis was stable. For the accelerated photolysis of molinate in aqueous solution, several photosensitizers were screened, showing that the hydroperoxide($H_2O_2$) and acetone were prominent among the chemical tested. When hydroperoxide and zinkoxide(ZnO) were used as photosensitizer, their photolysis were accelerated greater than 98% and 58% in aqueous solution, respectively. Elution rate of molinate as granular formulations in aqueous system was more than 90% in 30 hour at $35^{\circ}C$. Molinate concentration pattern in paddy water was rapidly decrease from treatment till 7 days in paddy rice field and its half-lives were 3.7 days($Y=1.9258{\times}e^{-0.1865X}$(r=-0.9402)).

  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants, found in the many environments. PCBs exerts various toxicological effects, including endocrine-disrupting activity. Most researches with these toxicants performed with soil matrix with mixtures of congeners, namely Aroclor, while the biological activities have been tested with animals. However, studies with pure congeners are limited. In this study, 5 congeners were synthesized and their fates (bioaccumulation, degradation, kinetics) were studied in carrot-soil system. The soil half-lives of biphenyl, PCB-1, PCB-3, PCB-77, and PCB-126 were 20.2, 16.0, 11.6, 46.5, 198.0 days, respectively. In general, the longer half-lives were observed with the higher hydrophoicity of PCBs. Times, required for maxium accumulation of PCBs in carrot (Tmax) were 10-20 days for most congeners and the concentrations were 0.4-2.6 mg/kg. The concentrations of PCBs in carrot were kept as constant after Tmax, except PCB-126. The concentration ratio between carrot and soil after 90 days of treatment were 1.7, 8.1, 1.9, 1.8, and 5.9 for biphenyl, PCB-1, PCB-3, PCB-77, and PCB-126. Because of the increase of biomass, the total residual amount of PCBs in carrots however, increased till the end of experiment. The portions of PCB-126 in carrot were 1.1% of the soil residues at 90 days after planting.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of initial concentration and moisture content on removal of phenol in soil. Texture of soil used was sandy loam. Air was supplied at the rate of $31{\ell}/m^3$(soil)/min. Initial phenol concentrations of contaminated-soils were about 700mg/kg and 1,200mg/kg(as dry weight basis), respectively. Low phenol concentration (about 700mg/kg) was degraded more rapidly than high concentration (about 1,200mg/kg). After phenol concentration of 1,200mg/kg was decreased to about 700mg/kg, its degradation was similar to the case of initial phenol concentration of about 700mg/kg. Phenol degradationrate rate of 15% soil moisture content was higher than that of 20%.

  • In this study, a simple, effective, and sensitive method has been developed for the quantitative residue analysis of cyhalofop-butyl and its metabolite cyhalofop acid in water and soil when kept under laboratory conditions. The content of cyholofop-butyl and cyhalofop acid in water and soil was analyzed by first purifying the compounds through liquid-liquid extraction and partitioning followed by Silica gel (adsorption) chromatography. Upon the completion of the purification step the residual levels were monitored through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a UV absorbance detector. The recoveries of cyhalofop-butyl from three replicates spiked at two different concentrations ranged from 82.5 to 100.0% and from 66.7 to 97.9% in water and soil, respectively. The limit of detection and minimum detection level of cyhalofop-butyl in water and soil was 0.02 ppm and 10 ng, respectively. The recoveries of cyhalofop acid ranged from 80.7 to 104.8% in water and from 76.9 to 98.1 % in soil. The limit of detection of cyhalofop acid was 0.005 ppm in water and 0.01 ppm in soil, while the minimum detection level was 2 ng both in water and soil. The half-live of cyhalofop-butyl was 4.14 and 6.6 days in water and soil, respectively. The method was successfully applied to evaluate cyhalofop-butyl residues in water and soil applied aj. 30% emulsion, oil in water (EW) product.

  • The ozone kinetics including ozone auto-decomposition. effect of pH, and solubility were investigated. Diesel decomposition process including TCE & PCE decomposition. effect of hydroxyl radical scavenger, effect of pH, and ozone/$H_2O$$_2$by ozonation process were also examined using deionized water, simulated groundwater. and actual groundwater. Reactions with deionized water and groundwater both stowed the second-order reaction rates, and the reaction rate was much higher in groundwater (half-life of 14.7 min) than in deionized water (hal(half-life of 37.5 min). The reaction rate was accelerated at high pH values in both waters. The use of ozone showed high oxidation rates of TCE. PCE and diesel. Though hydroxyl radical scavengers existing in groundwater were inhibitors for treating diesel, high pH condition and addition of hydrogen peroxide could accelerate to degrade diesel in groundwater, indicating ozone oxidation process could be applied to treating diesel contaminated-groundwater.

  • A study has been conducted to investigate the behavior of carbofuran in a miniature paddy agrosystem simulated for paddy field. Carbofuran applied onto the paddy water was rapidly absorbed and translocated into rice plants. Carbofuran concentration in rice plant reached its maximum level between 1 to 3 days after treatment and gradually decreased thereafter. Half life of carbofuran concentration in paddy water was 4 days in both application rates of 0.12 and 0.24Kg a.i./10a. Carbofuran residue in paddy soil was gradually dissipated with the half life of 8 and 12 days in 0.12 and 0.24㎏ a.i./l0a respectively. Range of carbofuran residue in brown rice and rice straw harvested from the paddy agrosystem was 0.01∼0.02 ppm and 0.37∼0.57 ppm irrespective of the two application rates respectively.
