  • The present study aims at investigating the effect of the fluid-structure interaction on the aerodynamic performances in the turbo blower. The design specifications of the reference model driven by 400kW power were given as 7.43kg/s of mass flow rate, 1.66 of pressure ratio with 12000rpm of impeller rotating speed. Numerical simulation has been performed on the three cases based on the tip clearance between the impeller blade and the shroud. The CFX-turbo for flow fields and ANSYS-mechanical for structure domain were applied to solve the present FSI problems inside the turbo blower. Through the numerical results, the performances corrected by the FSI effects were proposed for the more reliable predictions.

  • An analytical procedure on the base of the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the flexibility effect of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. The coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are then extensively investigated through the numerical simulation of simplified models, with varying the shaft rotational speed and the prewist and stagger angles of the blade. It is found that the Coriolis and inertia forces and the inertia torque, which are induced by the one nodal diameter modes of the bladed disk and vary depending upon the stagger and prewist angles, lead to the coupled motions of the shaft and the bladed disk.

  • Hydrodynamic performance test of a turbopump for a liquid rocket engine is carried out. The turbopump is composed of an oxidizer pump, a fuel pump and a turbine, and the two pumps are driven by the turbine. In the test, water is used for the pumps as working media and air is used for the turbine. Performance parameters of pumps and a turbine are drawn, and a power balance between the pumps and the turbine are calculated. The calculation shows a good power balance, which implies that the pump component tests, the turbine component test and the assembly test are reliably performed. At the starting period of the test, pressure rise-flow rate curve of a pump gradually approaches the ideal curve which could be obtained by very slow starting.

  • Thermal deformation of cast iron exhaust manifold for turbo diesel engine is investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). The FE model included the temperature dependent material properties as well as the interactions between exhaust manifold, cylinder head and fasteners. It also considers the sliding behavior of the flanges of exhaust manifold on cylinder head when either expansion or contraction of the exhaust manifold exceeds the fastener pretension. The result of analysis revealed that remarkable thermal deformation along the longitudinal direction. Compressive plastic deformation at high temperature remained tensile stress in manifold and resulted in longitudinal contraction at ambient temperature. The amount of contraction at each fastener position was predicted and compared with experimental results. Analysis results revealed that the model predicted deformation qualitatively, but more elaborated cyclic hardening behavior would be necessary to predict the deformation quantitatively.

  • An experimental study on pumping characteristics of various turbo-type drag pumps is purformed. The inlet pressures are measured for various outlet pressures of the test pump. The maximum compression ratios for nitrogen are 100,000(Disk-type drag pump+ turbo molecular pump), 10000(Helical-type drag pump+turbo molecular pump), 850 (Helical-type drag pump), 100(disk-type drag pump).

  • Stall inception means the phenomena of rotating stall initiation. The initiation mechanism of rotating stall, the existence of stall precursor, the behavior of stall precursor, stall warning scheme and control scheme are the main interests in stall inception research. Compared to the studies on rotating stall which has long history, the stall inception has been studied for about recent 20 years. After the first discovery of stall precursor in about 20 years ago, many studies were reported on stall inception phenomena. The inception pattern of "mode" and "spike" were found, and some of its characteristics are known. And now the stall inception has become one of the fascinating fields in turbomachinery. This paper reviews the results and analysis methods on stall inception studies.

  • To perform a cryogenic development test for Tribo-elements in a turbopump, a cryogenic bearing and seal test facility (BSTF) is designed and currently under construction in KARI. The working fluid is liquid nitrogen operating at a temperature $-197^{\circ}C$. The maximum operating pressure and volume flow rate of BSTF are 100 bar and 10 liters per second, respectively. The development tests of floating ring seals, inter-propellant seals (IPS) and cryogenic ball bearings in a turbopump will be performed using the BSTF. This paper briefly described design requirements and procedures of BSTF.

  • A cryogenic test facility has been developed to perform inducer and pump tests using liquid nitrogen. Performance tests of a turbopump in the maximum 50ton-thrust class can be performed with cryogenic fluid in the facility which operates at a temperature around $-196^{\circ}C$ with the rotational speed up to 30,000rpm. To verify the reliability of the cryogenic pump test facility, hydraulic performance tests of an inducer were accomplished, and their results were compared with the result from a water test The results confirm the reliability of the cryogenic test facility, and it is expected to contribute for on-going development of a turbopump for liquid rocket engines.

  • The magnitude of the axial force acting on turbopump bearings has a great influence on the operational reliability and service life of a turbopump. In the turbopump under current investigation the cavity vanes are introduced to the pump shroud casing to control the axial thrust of the turbopump. To investigate the effect of the cavity vanes, 3D computational flow analyses for a propellant pump stage including an inducer, impeller, volute and secondary flow passages are performed with and without the vanes. The results show that the cavity vanes are very effective in reducing the magnitude of axial thrust without notable changes on the overall performance of the turbopump.

  • Computational and experimental studies on the forward-sweep inducer for the rocket-engine turbopump are presented in comparison with the conventional backward-sweep inducer. It is shown that back flows at the inlet decreases for forward-sweep inducers. And the low pressure region at the back flow are also decreased, which is assumed to promote the suction performance of the inducers. The backward-sweep inducer shows almost the same suction performance as that of the backward-sweep inducers although it has small inlet tip diameter and shorter length. And the efficiency of the forward-type inducer shows better results than the backward-sweep inducer due to the small size of backflows.
