  • In urban areas, it is very often to excavate ground adjacent to existing structures for the construction of new buildings. Deformation and vibration induced by such construction activities may cause damages to the existing structures and petitions from citizens. To secure safety of the existing structures, particularly of tunnels, establishment of general guidelines on vibration have been crucial concerns, although some institutions have their own guidelines which are not generally accepted. This study aims establishing guidelines for tunnel safety due to blast-induced vibration. Numerical methods are adopted for this study. Blast load equation proposed by International Society of Explosive Engineers (2000) is used to decide detonation pressure. Analysis models were obtained from the construction cases of Seoul Metros. By performing dynamic numerical analysis, vibration velocity of an existing tunnel is evaluated. The numerical results are verified by comparing with the field measurement data obtained in excavation sites adjacent to an existing tunnel. Based on the results vibration safety zone is proposed. Influence circle for vibration velocity is drawn and the area not exceeding the allowable vibration velocity is established.

  • In this study, it was analyzed how the pore pressure behind a subsea tunnel influences on the stability of the tunnel. The tunnel is located in the soft rock layer, and a soft sandy layer and weathered soil layer are located on the top of it. Coupled numerical analyses are performed for both drained and undrained condition with varying coefficients of lateral earth pressure. In the case of undrained conditions, the stability of the tunnel was analyzed with different thicknesses of shotcrete. On the other hand, a sensitivity analysis was performed with different hydraulic conductivities and porosities of the shotcrete for the drained conditions. The stability of a subsea tunnel was evaluated in terms of safety factor suggested by You et al.(2000, 2001, 2005) based on the shear strength reduction technique. In this paper, the safety factor of a tunnel was calculated under steady state flow condition during hydro-mechanical coupled analysis. As a result, it was found that the stability of a subsea tunnel could be rather increased by allowing a proper amount of groundwater inflow into a subsea tunnel.

  • In the construction of the road tunnel in mine area, old mine gangways can cause the instability of the tunnel. In this case study, the field investigation is carried out to figure out the location of old gangways adjacent to the tunnel, and their influence on the tunnel stability is estimated according to the location pattern and rock condition by FLAC analysis. The grouting reinforcement of tunnel crown region and old gangway is suggested and its role on assurance of the tunnel stability is also verified. It can be said from this study that the effect of the old gangway on the stability of tunnel varies with the dimension of gangway, distance from the tunnel, rock condition and groundwater, and therefore these paramerter should be compositively considered in the assessment of the tunnel stability.

  • In this paper, the modeling procedure of random field with an elasto-plastic finite element algorithm and probability of failure on closely-spaced tunnel were investigated. Local average subdivision (LAS) method which can generate discrete random variables fast and accurately as well as change the resolution in certain region was used. And correlated value allocating and weighted average method were suggested to implement geometrical characteristics of tunnel. After the probability of failure on the test problem was thoroughly investigated using random finite element method, the results were compared with the deterministic strength reduction factor method and single random variable method. Of particular importance in this work, is the conclusion that the probability of failure determined by simplified probabilistic analysis, in which spatial variability is ignored by assuming perfect correlation, can be estimated from the safety factor determined by strength reduction factor method. Also, single random variable method can lead to unconservative estimates of the probability of failure.

  • Limit analysis of upper and lower bound solutions has been well developed to provide the stability numbers for shallow tunnels in cohesive soil ($c_u$ material), cohesive-frictional soil (c'-$\phi$' material) and cohesionless soil ($\phi$'material). However, an extension of these methods to relatively deep circular tunnels in the cohesionless soil has been explored rarely to date. For this reason, the closed-form analytical solutions including lower bound solution based on the stress discontinuity concept and upper bound solution based on the kinematically admissible failure mechanism were proposed for assessing tunnel collapse load in this study. Consequently, the tunnel collapse load from those solutions was compared with both the finite element analysis and the previous analytical bound solutions and shown to be in good agreement with the FE results, in particular with the FE soil elements located on the horizontal tunnel axis.

  • In recent years, the needs for double deck-tunnels have increased in large cities due to the increase in traffic volume and high land compensation costs. In Korea, a network type tunnel which is smaller than general road tunnels and crosses another tunnel underground is planned. In the shield tunnel joints between the existing shield tunnel and the box-type enlargement section, a partial steel-concrete joint is proposed where the bending moment is large instead of the existing full-section steel joint. In order to analysis the enlargement section of the shield tunnel diverged section to reflect the three-dimensional effect, the two-dimensional analysis model is considered to consider the column effect and the stiffness effect of the longitudinal member. A two-dimensional analysis method is proposed to reflect the stiffness of the longitudinal member and the column effect of the longitudinal point by considering the rigidity of the longitudinal member as the elastic spring point of the connecting part in the lateral model. As a result of the analysis of the model using the longitudinal member, it was considered that the structural safety of the partial steel-concrete joint can be secured by reducing the bending moment of the joint and the box member by introducing the longitudinal member having the stiffness equal to or greater than a certain value.

  • This study is focused on the analysis of tunnel behavior to estimate the stability on tunnel design. An estimation method was proposed as a hybrid consideration, which contains the displacement analysis by 3D numerical simulation, the maximum displacement obtained after field measurement, and an assessment of tunnel stability using a deformation analysis proposed by Sakurai(1988, 1997). The points of case study by Sakurai(1988, 1997) were replotted considering his analysis. From the new analysis of the tunnel case study, the trend line for analyzed points is analogized, which curve is divided into stable, unstable and failure zone. To evaluate the estimation method, a special shape of railway tunnel was selected, which are the Inchon international airport rail way connected to subway line 9 in Gimpo, Korea. The point s of upper and below track on the Inchon international airport rail way were satisfied to the stability of tunnel after reinforcing. Also the points shows the higher apparent Young's modulus, which resulted from improvement on shear strength by the micro silica grouting and the supporting of umbrella method. Therefore, if new analysis used, proper tunnel reinforcing method could be selected according to tunnel strain and geological property.

  • Recently, in urban areas there is a tendency to construct more complex network-type tunnels including entrance and exit ramps. At the same time, various one-dimensional programs based on the network theory have been proposed for tunnel ventilation analysis. This paper aims at developing a program that can analyze the ventilation flow rate and pollutants concentration in complex network-type tunnels based on the none hardy-cross method. The flow analysis in the branch was carried out on the basis of the Gradient method, while for the concentration analysis a new logic has been developed to calculate the inflow and outflow concentration automatically in a complex network-type structure. Additionally, in the tunnel segments showing low flow rate, proper grid interval sizes were proposed to reduce numerical error. To verify the applicability of the program, flow rates predicted in the straight tunnels were compared with the classical velocity-diagram method by Stokic and the TVSDM program. The results showed that the errors were within 1%. In addition, the program was applied to the recent ventilation system adopted in the complex network-type urban tunnels.

  • The use of tunnels in major transportation schemes has increased considerably during the last decade especially in urban area. The state of stress and the displacements in a zone around a tunnel will be modified by the construction of a tunnel. Therefore, it is necessary to study the influence factors for the nearby tunnels. This paper describes the design concept and analysis method on the closely spaced tunnels. The main purpose of the present paper is to study the influence of tunnel construction on the behaviour induced in the liners of nearby tunnels. The effects of tunnel proximity and alignment, liner stiffness and settlements are also reviewed in this paper. The paper then introduces the design and analysis methods for the closely spaced tunnels which is very useful in practice.
