A certain range of the original ground around the tunnel should be preserved to ensure structural safety of the tunnel when other structures are made around the tunnel, and thus this range is defined as safety zone of the tunnel. The main points to ensure the stability of an existing tunnel when constructing a new tunnel in an inter-crossing area are distance between two tunnels, size of the new tunnel, excavation method for the new tunnel, ground condition around the tunnel, and lining type of the existing tunnel etc. When the new tunnel is excavated above the existing tunnel, the existing tunnel is likely to suffer deformation at a crown zone, damage of arching effect, and live load of the new tunnel etc. On the other hand, when the new tunnel is excavated below the existing tunnel, the existing tunnel is likely to be damaged due to settlement. This study has been made on the behavior of the existing tunnel by means of model test and numerical analysis when the new tunnel is excavated below the existing tunnel. Safety zone of the tunnel was estimated by the results of strength/stress ratio obtained from numerical analysis, and the movement of ground was estimated by the model test. The results of earth pressure, ground displacements, and convergence of the tunnel obtained from model test were compared with those of numerical analysis, and show a similar trend.

In the ease that a new cross tunnel is constructed under the existing tunnel, development of a longitudinal arching would be influenced by the existing tunnel. But it is not enough to investigate. Especially, the influence of the structure loads on the ground surface on the new tunnel, which the under-passes existing tunnel has been rarely studied. This study, therefore, aimed to clarify the effect of the existing tunnel and the structure on the ground surface on the development of a longitudinal ground arching during the excavation of a cross tunnel under the existing tunnel. Two-dimensional model tests were carried out in the test box, whose dimension was 30 cm (wide) ${\times}$ 113 cm (deep) ${\times}$ 87 cm (high). The existing tunnel was made of S21 steel tube in 16 cm diameter and 1 mm thickness. The ground surface load was 4.9 kPa and was loaded on the model structure in the size with 30 cm width ${\times}$ 16 cm height. New tunnel was excavated in 250 mm height by a bench cut method. As results, the longitudinal arching would be developed but it was severely influenced by not only the existing upper tunnel but also the ground surface load. The influence of the ground surface load on the development of longitudinal ground arching around a new tunnel showed the highest value when the tunnel face located direct under the surface load.

The screw conveyor system installed in EPB Shield TBM chamber was manufactured in small scale for pilot test to investigate the tunnel muck hauling system that could control the earth pressure and support face thrust force. In this experimental study, there were three different test conditions that include screw angles, screw pitch, and screw RPM. Through analysis on test results based on the muck hauling amount per unit time from screw conveyor, the optimum conditions of screw conveyor were proposed to be efficiently performed by the muck processing system. Finally, this study provided the meaningful results such as optimum screw angle, screw RPM, and screw pitch for anti-reverse flow of muck hauling.
The Tunnel portal is designed on temporary support system which is composed by 28m height H-Pile method and Ground Anchor method. The tunnel has excavated about 30m from the portal, but some deformation is found on the surface ground just above the tunnel face. It was investigated very carefully to find out the causes of deformation. By the observation and study, two main causes of deformation are found out. The one is earth pressure increase compared with classical earth pressure theory. That was due to the direction of ground rock mass's discontinuities. It causes the increase of earth pressure that are activated by the direction of discontinuity. The other one is that present design method neglect the transferred force by removal of temporary support members and ground anchor within the tunnel contour line as the tunnel excavation proceeds As the result of removals of the member and anchor, some force transferred from removed systems to remaining supporting systems. In designing the portal support systems, lt must be considered the discontiunity of ground mass and the transfered force due to excation.

This paper is aimed to suggest the coefficient of variation of the total load on the segment lining and the coefficient of variation of earth pressure in reliability based design of shield tunnel. For this purpose, the statistical characteristics of weathered soil and weathered rock were calculated by analyzing the site survey data of the domestic urban section. The coefficient of variation could be estimated by applying these values to Terzaghi's theory using MCS technique. As a result, the coefficient of variation of rock load for weathered soil and weathered rock was 0.08~0.14. The coefficient of variation for the total load acting on the tunnel was LC1 = 0.38, LC2 = 0.33, and LC3 = 0.37. The proposed coefficients of variation can be used in the reliability-based design of shield tunnel segments.

Design criteria for limit state design of underground structures have already been published overseas, and research has been conducted to revise the design method in Korea. In order to estimate the probability of failure under seismic load, the probability variable should be considered in the reliability analysis. In this study, the failure probability of the existing shield tunnel segment lining design was calculated by applying the coefficient of variation (COV) for the earth pressure and the seismic load effect in consideration of the statistical characteristics of the domestic ground properties. Based on the results of calculating the reliability index (β) from the calculated probability of failure and analyzing the reliability index according to the change in the load factor and the results of domestic and foreign research, the target reliability index (βT) during earthquakes of shield tunnel segment lining is analyzed to be "2.3", it was proposed as the target reliability index for the design of the limit state under seismic load.

Recently, as the number of high-rise building and earthquake occurrence are increasing, it is more important to consider horizontal load such as wind and seismic loads, earth pressure, for the pile foundation. Also, development of underground space in urban areas is more demanded to meet various problem induced by growing population. Many studies on pile subjected to horizontal load have been conducted by many researchers. However, research regarding interactive behavior on pile subjected to horizontal load with tunnel are rare, so far. In this study, therefore, study on the behaviors of ground and horizontal and vertical loads applied to single pile was carried out using laboratory model test and numerical analysis. The pile axial force and ground deformation were investigated according to offset between pile and tunnel (0.0D, 1.0D, 2.0D: D = tunnel diameter). At the same time, close range photogrammetry was used to measure displacement of underground due to tunnelling during laboratory model test. The results from numerical analysis were compared to that from laboratory model test.

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is one of the useful numerical methods to analyze the behavior of the ground formation by computing the motion and interaction using particles. The DEM has not been applied in civil engineering but also a wide range of industrial fields, such as chemical engineering, pharmacy, material science, food engineering, etc. In this study, to review a performance of the spoke-type earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), the commercial software based on the DEM technology was used. An analysis of the TBM during excavation was conducted according to two pre-defined excavation conditions with the different rotation speed of a cutterhead. During the analysis, the resistant torque at the face of the cutterhead, the compressive force at the cutterhead and shield surface, the muck discharge at the screw auger were measured and compared. Upon the two kinds of excavation conditions, the applicability of the DEM analysis was reviewed as a modelling method for the TBM.

In recent years, the use of underground spaces becomes more frequent and the demands for urban tunnels are rapidly increasing. The urban tunnels constructed in the ground with a shallow and soft cover might be deformed in various forms on the face, which would lead, the tunnels to behavior 3-dimensionally, which may have a great impact on the longitudinal load transfer. The tunnel face might deform in various forms depending on the construction method, overburden and the heterogeneity of the ground. And accordingly, the type and size of the distribution of the load transferred to the ground adjacent to the tunnel face as well as the form of the loosened ground may appear in various ways depending on the deformation form of the tunnel face. Therefore, in this study was conducted model tests by idealizing the deformation behavior of the tunnel face, that were constant deformation, the maximum deformation on the top and the maximum deformation on the bottom. And the test results were analyzed focusing on the deformation of the face and the longitudinal load transfer at the ground above the tunnel. As results, it turned out that the size and the distribution type of the load, which was transferred to the tunnel as well as the earth pressure on the face were affected by the deformation type of the face. The largest load was transferred to the tunnel when the deformation was in a constant form. Less load was transferred when the maximum deformation on the bottom, and the least load was transferred when the maximum deformation on the top. In addition, it turned out that, if the cover became more shallow, a longitudinal load transfer in the tunnel would limited to the region close to the face; however, if the cover became higher than a certain value, the area of the load transfer would become wider.

It is important to design tunnel support system considering the various loads acting on the tunnel because they have a direct impact on the stability of tunnels. In Korea, standardized support patterns are defined based on the rock mass classification system depending on the project, and it is stated that it should be modified appropriately considering the behavior of tunnel during construction. In this study, the tunnel support pattern optimization method is suggested based on the convergence-confinement method, earth pressure, axial force of rock bolt, and moment acting on the shotcrete. The length and spacing of the rock bolts and the thickness of the shotcrete were optimized by using the differential evolution algorithm (DEA) and the results were compared to the standard support pattern III for railway tunnel. Rock bolt length can be reduced and the installation interval can be widened for shallow tunnel. As the depth of tunnel increases, the thickness of shotcrete increases linearly. Therefore, the thickness of shotcrete should be thicker than the standard support pattern as the depth of tunnel increases to secure the stability of tunnel.
