  • The maintenance and management of each tunnel has been individually performed in depending on service, management agency, and tunnel size. The maintenance and management system for the existing tunnel consists of simple tunnel card and the computerization of basic tunnel data, now. There is not the systemic maintenance and management system for tunnel. Therefore, it has been impossible the systemic maintenance and management for tunnel due to loss of data obtained from each step, such as, plan, design, construction, or maintenance, with time. The objective of this study is to build the database system in combing the results of tunnel scanning with all data obtained from plan, design, construction, or maintenance step.

  • Recently, as the construction of new railway and the relocation of existing line increase, tunnel structures grow longer. The railway fire accidents in long tunnel bring large damages of human life and disaster. The interest of safety in long tunnel have a growing and the safety standard of long tunnel is tightening. For that reason, at the planning of long tunnel, the optimum design of safety facility in long tunnel for minimizing the risks and satisfying the safety standard is needed. For the reasonable design of long railway tunnel considering high safety, qualitative estimation for tunnel safety is required. In this study, QRA (Quantitative Risk Assessment) technique is applied to design of long railway tunnel for assuring the safety function and estimating the risk of safety. The case study for safety design in long railway tunnel is tarried out to verifying the QRA technique for two railway tunnels. Thus, the inclined and vertical shaft for escape way and safety facilities in long tunnel are planned, and the risks of tunnel safety for each case are estimated quantitatively.

  • Recently, the proportion of tunnel structures in roads and railways has increased rapidly. Along with this trend, the rate of occurrence of cracks and dropouts in concrete lining of tunnel structures is increasing. Generally, maintenance of such concrete lining is normalized and managed as the core of maintenance work in tunnel maintenance. However, the maintenance of the tunnel pavement is important in securing driver in the tunnel. In the design of tunnels, the underground condition of the tunnel is designed to be in good rock condition, so there have not been many cases of cracks in the tunnel pavement in the past. Recently, the construction of tunnel structures has been rapidly increased, and the length of the tunnels has become longer.Tunnel pavement installed in these ground conditions is increasing the occurrence of cracks in the pavement due to decrease of bearing capacity of the pavement after a long time. In this study, FWD and GPR were conducted to analyze the types of cracks and the reduction of bearing capacity in the tunnel.

  • Two-arch tunnels require minimal spacing between the 2 tunnels and thus occupy small amount of land compared to parallel tunnels. But it is rather expensive. The parallel tunnel is not as expensive, but it requires more land than 2-arch tunnels. This may cause a problem when there is a land shortage. The new design is to connect these two types of tunnels by another pair of parallel tunnels where the separation distance is gradually increasing. The applicability of this new design to the cases where rock condition is not even fair has to be verified since the width of the pillar between the connecting tunnels can be quite narrow. Therefore both two and three dimensional numerical analyses were conducted and pillar stability was examined for rock classes IV and V in two different ways. Results showed that this new design is still effective for poor rock conditions if central pillar is properly reinforced by tension bolts as long as overburden is less than five times of the tunnel diameter.

  • Existing cut-and-cover tunnels are designed regardless of cut-slope under the assumption that the overburden weight of backfill soil acts on tunnel arch and the earth pressure at rest acts on tunnel walls. However, actual earth pressures acting on the tunnel lining depend on open-cut size composed of cut-slope and cut-width, and thus the tunnel lining shows a different structural behavior. This study investigated the effect of cut-slope on structural behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel lining as follows; Firstly, a comprehensive numerical analysis method using FLAC2D code was used and verified by field measurements of tunnel profile. Secondly, based on the verified numerical analysis technique, earth pressure acting on the lining, and displacement and sectional force developed on the lining were estimated with various shapes of cut-slopes$30^{\circ}\;, 456{\circ},\; 60^{\circ},\; and\;75^{\circ}%). Numerical analysis results indicate that the steeper cut-slope shows the more displacement and moment of the tunnel lining.

  • The two dimensional behaviors of the existing upper tunnel and the ground at crossed area due to the excavation of a lower tunnel were studied experimentally, The model tests were conducted by changing the relative location of the existing upper tunnel and the lower tunnel. The results of the study show that a vertical earth pressure outside the loosened area was increased due to longitudinal arching effect same as a single tunnel. In case vertical distance between the upper and lower tunnel is 0.7 H and 1.0 H respectively (H is a height of the lower tunnel), vertical earth pressure increased in the loosened area behind the tunnel face. But when a vertical distance is 1, 3 H, ground behaviors appeared similarly to a single tunnel.

  • This study is focused on finding out the mechanical behavior of pillars and the ground adjacent to the tunnel depending on the central tunnel size and the invert during the construction of 2 arch tunnels in the sandy ground. Model tests were performed in the trap door system, which was composed of 3 separately movable plates. Central pillar was installed on the central movable plate to measure the pillar loads during the excavation of pilot tunnel and the main tunnel. The load-transfer and the loosening load were measured at the bottom plates adjacent to the 2 arch tunnels. The ground settlement and displacement of the tunnel lining were also measured. As results, not only pillar load but also the load transfer mechanism was influenced by the construction sequences, central tunnel size, and the invert.

  • Baehuryeong tunnel connects Chuncheon with Hwacheon in Kangwon, Korea, This tunnel is a single tunnel with 5,057 m long and two bidirectional lanes which will be extended into low lanes in the future. The estimated construction period of Baehuryeong tunnel is approximately 55 months. This tunnel will become the longest bidirectional roadway tunnel in Korea. Compared to a twin tunnel, a bidirectional single tunnel has two major disadvantages with regard to the ventilation system and ease of escape during fire. For these reasons, a service tunnel and the transverse ventilation system are planned first time in Korea. In case of fire, the tunnel ventilation design aims to maintain a smoke free layer for passenger evacuation. The geology of Baehuryeong tunnel site is mainly composed of gneiss and granite. Baehuryeong fault is a mainly large scale fault which stands vertical and parallels with tunnel direction. The influenced zone of this fault is within 70 m. Baehuryeong tunnel was designed that it was separated with the distance of more than 100 m from Baehuryeong fault for its safety.
