  • Existing cut-and-cover tunnels are designed regardless of cut-slope under the assumption that the overburden weight of backfill soil acts on tunnel arch and the earth pressure at rest acts on tunnel walls. However, actual earth pressures acting on the tunnel lining depend on open-cut size composed of cut-slope and cut-width, and thus the tunnel lining shows a different structural behavior. This study investigated the effect of cut-slope on structural behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel lining as follows; Firstly, a comprehensive numerical analysis method using FLAC2D code was used and verified by field measurements of tunnel profile. Secondly, based on the verified numerical analysis technique, earth pressure acting on the lining, and displacement and sectional force developed on the lining were estimated with various shapes of cut-slopes$30^{\circ}\;, 456{\circ},\; 60^{\circ},\; and\;75^{\circ}%). Numerical analysis results indicate that the steeper cut-slope shows the more displacement and moment of the tunnel lining.

  • Ground characteristics is important in tunnel structure utilizing the strength of underground. In the case of the fault fracture zone such as weak soil conditions exists in the tunnel section and groundwater leaching occurs at the same time, it happens to occur to excessive displacement or collapse of tunnel frequently. Fault fracture zone is an important factor that determines the direction of displacement and the collapse of the tunnel under construction. Behavior of fault fracture zone is determined depending on the size and orientation of the surface portion of the tunnel. If the groundwater occurs in the face of tunnel, groundwater causes displacement and collapse. And the collapse characteristics of tunnel is a major factor in determining that the time-dependent behavior. It is difficult to accurately predict groundwater leaching from the fault fracture zone in the numerical analysis method and analyze the interaction behavior of groundwater and fault fracture zone. Therefore numerical analysis method has limitations the analysis of ground water in the ground which the fault fracture zone and groundwater occurs at the same time. It is required to comprehensively predict the behavior of tunnel and case studies of tunnel construction. Thus, the location of fault fracture zone is an important factor that determines the direction of displacement and the collapse of the tunnel. In this study, behavior characteristics of the tunnel according to the location of the fault fracture was analyzed.

  • Recently, as the number of high-rise building and earthquake occurrence are increasing, it is more important to consider horizontal load such as wind and seismic loads, earth pressure, for the pile foundation. Also, development of underground space in urban areas is more demanded to meet various problem induced by growing population. Many studies on pile subjected to horizontal load have been conducted by many researchers. However, research regarding interactive behavior on pile subjected to horizontal load with tunnel are rare, so far. In this study, therefore, study on the behaviors of ground and horizontal and vertical loads applied to single pile was carried out using laboratory model test and numerical analysis. The pile axial force and ground deformation were investigated according to offset between pile and tunnel (0.0D, 1.0D, 2.0D: D = tunnel diameter). At the same time, close range photogrammetry was used to measure displacement of underground due to tunnelling during laboratory model test. The results from numerical analysis were compared to that from laboratory model test.

  • In the deign of cut and cover tunnel, the structural analysis such as rigid frame analysis has been used for its simplicity and convenience. The structural analysis, however, can not consider the geological and geotechnical factors such as soil arching effect. In this study, the dominant factors influencing the behavior of cut and cover tunnel such as interface element, slope of excavation plane, distance between slope and tunnel lining, and location of slope of covered soil, were investigated by the numerical analysis to develop the analysis technique and design technology. Based on the results, the variation of bending moment, shear stress, axial force and displacements were evaluated and analyzed for each factor.

  • Several attempts to construct multi-purpose tunnel for both road and waterway have been made. The multi-purpose tunnel is mainly used as a road tunnel, however it is transferred to waterway to control flood during rainy season. The planning of the multi-purpose tunnel is recognized as cost-effective way of infrastructure construction. In case of the multi-purpose tunnel constructed beneath groundwater table, seasonal fluctuation of groundwater table and repeated flow in the tunnel may cause long-term deterioration of the tunnel system. In this study, the behavior of multi-purpose tunnel in view of groundwater table or flow in the tunnel is investigated using model test and numerical modeling method. The results have shown that rising of groundwater table caused buoyant force to the tunnel and the fluctuation of rainwater in the tunnel generated loosening of surrounding ground. It is recommended to evaluate the effect of the long-term water pressure variation in the design of a multi-purpose tunnel.

  • In congested urban areas, constructions of tunnel structures have became necessary due to a lack of surface space. The excavation of any tunnel generated the ground disturbances of surrounding ground and displacements is major concern. Therefore, a study of tunnel stability is necessary. In this study, the authors have investigated the stability and failure pattern of tunnel through the model tunnel test. In this study, the close range photogrammetry was used to measure the ground deformation. The measured data was converted to displacement vectors and contours. And then it compared to FE analysis and empirical formula. In addition, this study presented the comparison between steel pipe reinforced model tunnel and unreinforced model tunnel. The ground deformation for both the steel pipe reinforced model tunnel and the unreinforced model tunnel was analysed.

  • To maintain the traffic flow during tunnel expansion, cars must be protected from falling rocks during excavation and to do so, a protector has to be installed inside the tunnel before beginning the excavation. In Korea, tunnel expansion by blasting rather than by mechanical excavation has been widely achieved. For this reason, a series of numerical analysis were performed to analyze the characteristics of impact load according to material behaviour of blasted rock by using Explicit FEA program. From the numerical results, it is found that the impact loads when rock is assumed as an elastic-plastic material appear to be only 7~12% compared with that when it is elastic.

  • In the current work, a series of three-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out to understand the behaviour of a pre-existing single pile to the changes of the tunnel face pressures when a shield TBM tunnel passes underneath the pile. The numerical modelling analysed the results by considering various face pressures (25~100% of the in-situ horizontal stress prior to tunnelling at the tunnel springline). In the numerical modelling, several key issues, such as the pile settlements, the axial pile forces, the shear stresses have been thoroughly analysed for different face pressures. The head settlements of the pile with the maximum face pressure decreased by about 44% compared to corresponding settlement with the minimum face pressure. Furthermore, the maximum axial force of the pile developed with the minimum face pressure. The tunnelling-induced axial pile force at the minimum face pressure was found to be about 21% larger than that with the maximum face pressure. It has been found that the ground settlements and the pile settlements are heavily affected by the face pressures. In addition, the influence of the piles and the ground was analysed by considering characteristics of the soil deformations. Also, the apparent safety factor of the piles are substantially reduced for all the analyses conducted in the current simulation, resulting in severe effects on the adjacent piles. Therefore, the behaviour of the piles, according to change the face pressures, has been extensively examined and analysed by considering the key features in great details.

  • This paper concerns the effect of orientation and geometric characteristics of a fracture zone on the tunnel behavior using a numerical investigation. A parametric study was executed on a number of drill and blast tunnelling cases representing different fracture and tunnelling conditions using two and three dimensional finite element analyses. The variables considered include the strike and dip angle of fracture zone relative to the longitudinal tunnel axis, the width and the clearance of the fracture zone, the tunnel depth, and the initial lateral stress coefficient. The results of the analyses were examined in terms of the tunnel deformation including crown settlement, convergence, and invert heave as well as shotcrete lining stresses. The results indicate that the tunnel deformation as well as the shotcrete lining stress are strongly influenced by the orientation of the fracture zone, and that such a trend becomes more pronounced for tunnels with greater depths.
