In this paper, with water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture which utilizes solar energy as mid temperature range evaporator heat source, a thermodynamic analysis was performed to provide design data for a double-effect absorption heating system. A comparative study of the water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture against the water-LiBr pair was conducted by a computer simulation. The computer simulation is based on mass, material and heat balance equations for each part of the system. Coefficients of performance and flow ratios for effects of different operating temperatures are investigated. It is found that the heating COP is higher for the water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture than for the water-LiBr pair, and FR is lower for the former.
This paper reports the performance of solar domestic hot water systems manufactured with heat pipes. A series of tests were conducted on a number of systems to elicit the most suitable configuration of the system for possible commercialization in Korea. The heat pipe is made with a copper tube and the respective length of the evaporator, adiabatic, and condenser sections are 1700mm, 100mm and 200mm. The evaportor section is finned with a copper plate to increase solar input for its proper operation as a heat pipe. Results show quite an interesting performance data stemming from the difference in working fluids, presence of wick, and other various design parameters associated with the collection and utilization of solar energy.

In this study, the optimal design of heat exchangers, including the evaporator and condenser of a solar-heating ocean thermal energy conversion (SH-OTEC), is investigated. The power output of the SH-OTEC is assumed to be 100 kW, and the SH-OTEC uses the working fluid of R134a and high-performance commercial tubes. The surface heat transfer area and the pressure drop were strongly dependent on the number of tubes, as well as the number of tube passes. To solve the reciprocal tendency between the heat transfer area and pressure drop with respect to the number of tubes, as well as the number of tube passes, a genetic algorithm (GA) with two objective functions of the heat transfer area (the capital cost) and operating cost (pressure drop) was used. Optimal results delineated the feasible regions of heat transfer area and operating cost with respect to the pertinent number of tubes and tube passes. Pareto fronts of the evaporator and condenser obtained from multi-objective GA provides designers or investors with a wide range of optimal solutions so that they can select projects suitable for their financial resources. In addition, the surface heat transfer area of the condenser took up a much higher percentage of the total heat transfer area of the SH-OTEC than that of the evaporator.
A prototype of the desiccant cooling system with a regenerative evaporative cooler was built and tested for the performance evaluation. The regenerative evaporative cooler is to cool a stream of air using evaporative cooling effect without an inc6rease in the humidity ratio. It is comprised of multiple pairs of dry and wet channels and the evaporation water is supplied only to the wet channels. By redirecting a portion of the air flown out of the dry channel into the wet channel, the air can be cooled down to a temperature lower than its inlet wet-bulb temperature at the outlet end of the dry channels. Incorporating a regenerative evaporative cooler eliminates the need for deep dehumidification in the desiccant rotor that is necessary to achieve low air temperature in the system with a direct evaporative cooler. Subsequently, the regenerative evaporative cooler enables the use of low temperature heat source to regenerate the dehumidifier permitting the desiccant cooling system more beneficial compared with other thermal driven air conditioners. At the ARI condition with the regeneration temperature of $60^{\circ}C$, the prototype showed the cooling capacity of 4.4 kW and COP of 0.75.

In this study, a solar thermal system is designed to provide hot water and electricity for improvement of solar thermal energy availability in an apartment complex. The electricity is generated with Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by the solar thermal energy. R134a, R141b and R245fa are selected for operating fluid of the solar thermal ORC system. ORC with R245fa shows the best performance based on the variation of pressure. The irreversibility of component showed that the technology advance of the evaporator ensures a performance improvement. The sensitivity study results indicate that the turbine performance is most effective way to improve the performance of ORC system. An economic analysis showed that approximately 50% more income could be achieved by a solar thermal ORC system with a hot water supply.
The evaporative desalination system using solar thermal energy would be the efficient and attractive method to get fresh water from brine due to low carbon dioxide generation. In this research the solar desalination system as a heating source of refrigerant R123 in the evaporator was considered. The circulation of refrigerant in the evaporator can reduce the energy consumption of the system, because of using the latent heat of the refrigerant 123 instead of the sensible heat of present hot water. The system was comprised of the single-stage fresh water production unit on the capacity of 1ton/day with shell and tube type evaporator, heaters instead of solar collector to supply the proper heat to refrigerant, and refrigerant and brine circulation systems. Various operating flowrate and temperature ranges were varied in the experiments to get the optimum design data. The results showed that the optimum flow rate of brine feed rate to evaporator was 1.2Liter/min, and the yield of fresh water was increased as higher temperature of feed brine. It was confirmed that the circulation flowrate of heating source of refrigerant was decrease of one fifth of the present warm water system, and very efficient system for solar desalination.

A seawater distiller, in which the waste heat from a portable electric generator was used, with a multiple-effect diffusion still was designed. The waste gas from small generators commonly used in islands has not yet been used because it has less thermal energy; however, this waste gas can be used as a heat source for small-capacity distillers and as an additional heat source for solar stills. The proposed distiller comprises a series of closely spaced parallel partitions that are placed in contact with saline-soaked wicks. In the distiller, evaporation and condensation processes are repeated to recycle the thermal energy for increasing the distillate productivity. Experimental results show that the proposed distiller with only one-effect still can produce at least 6.7 kg/day of distilled water; the proposed distiller with a ten-effect still is expected to produce 43 kg/day of distilled water. This amount of distillate is approximately four times the maximum daily productivity of the solar stills, as determined in outdoor experiments.
The goal of this paper is to measure and compare the performance of solar heat pump for refrigerants. To accomplish the goal, solar heat pump with aluminum roll bond type evaporator and indoor heat exchanged(condenser) was built. The test results showed that the COP and heating capacity of HFC-32/125/134a(23/25/52 wt%, $CH_2F_2/CF_3CHF_2/CF_3CH_2F$) were higher than those of HCFC-22$(CHClF_2)$. A study proved that best conditions to use heating system that is about $40m^2$ and $80m^2$. The COP range of the whole system was from 4 to 6 according to the solar collector's area variation. Hydrochlo-rofluorocarbon HCFC-22$(CHClF_2)$ is included in the compound to be controlled. HFC-32/125/134a(23/25/52 wt%, $CH_2F_2/CF_3CHF_2/CF_3CH_2F$) is the most suitable replacement HCFC-22$(CHClF_2)$ in solar heat pump application. The solar heat pump system was designed to show the best efficiency that the room temperature make $18\sim20^{\circ}C$ and $23\sim25^{\circ}C$ in Seoul during the fall season.
In this study, we have carried out development and performance evaluation of optimized MEMS(Multi-Effect-Multi-Stage) fresh water generator with $7m^2/day$ for solar thermal desalination system. The developed MEMS was composed of high temperature part and low temperature part. This arrangement has the advantage of increasing the availability of solar thermal energy. The MEMS consists of 2 steam generators, 5 evaporators, and 1 condenser. Tubes of heat exchanger used for steam generators, evaporators and condenser were manufactured by corrugated tubes. The performance of the MEMS was tested through in-door experiments, using an electric heater as heat source. The experimental conditions for each parameters were $20^{\circ}C$ for sea water inlet temperature to condenser, $8.16m^2$ /hour sea water inlet volume flow rate, $70^{\circ}C$ for hot water inlet temperature to generator of high temperature part, 3.6 4.8, 6.0 $m^2/hour$ for hot water inlet volume flow rate. As a result, The developed MEMS was required about 85 kW heating source to produce $7m^2/day$ of fresh water. It was analyzed that the performance ratio of MEMS was about 2.6.
