  • To investigate the forest structure and to suggest the basic data of forest in the Baekcheon Valley, fifty plots were set up and surveyed According to the analysis of classification by TWINSPAN. the community was divided by five groups of Quercus mongolica-Pinus densiflora(I), P. densiflora-Q. mongolica(II), Acer pseudosieboldianum-Q. mongolica(III). Betula schmidtii-A. pseudosieboldianum(IV), and Cornus controversa community(V). The structure of communities was investigated using importance value by layers The survey results were summarized as follows: 1) the results of annual ring analysis revealed that the age of Pinus densiflora forest was about 50~75 years old and Q. mongolica forest was about 40 years. 2) number of the average species was 11 1$\pm$2.2 and number of average individual was 74.6$\pm$28 1 per a plot(100$m^2$). From the above results including DBH distribution analysis it was anticipated that the deciduous broad leaf tree like C. controversa and B. schmidtii will be climax species instead of Q. mongolica. and P. densiflora.

  • According to the data analysis of the regional fracture systems in southern Korea, the fracture orientations show three dominant sets : NNE, NW and WNW. A NNE set is the most abundant and includes most of the largest fractures. The highest fracture density is shown in the Taebaegsan mineralized area corresponding to Ogchon nonmetamorphic belt and the lowest one in the southwestern area of southern Korea. In addition, the density is higher in nonmetamorphic sedimentary rocks such as Choseon Supergroup. Pyeongan Supergroup, Daedong Supergroup and Kyeongsang Supergroup than in Precambrian basements and Jurassic granites. The regional fractures in southern Korea can be classified into four orders designated $F_1,{\;}F_2,{\;}F_3{\;}and{\;}F_4${\;}and{\;}F_4$ on the basis of their trace length. It is quite significant that fractures of each order are self-similar with respect to orientation and the combined fracture length distribution indicates a power-law distribution with an exponent of -2.04. As fractures were analyzed based on the tectonic provinces, Gyeonggj Massif and Kyeongsang Basin have all orders of fractures from $F_1$ to $F_4$. Most of the large scale faults may be ascribed to the products of slip accumulation through multiple deformation. Others besides $F_1$ fractures are thought to be evenly distributed through the whole area of southern Korea.

  • Zoning of the agroclimatic regions was attempted based on the distribution of drought index, effective temperature, meteorological factors and their standard deviation and a climatic productivity derived from yield response of rice to temperature and sunshine hours. The meteorological data obtained from synoptic weather stations under the Central Meteorology Office and simple weather observatories under the Rural Development Administration at 155 locations throughout the country were computerized in the PDP11/70, RDA Computer Center, to analyze the climatic similarities among the locations, except the Jeju Island. The nineteen different agroclimatic regions were classified, ego the Taebaeg Mountainous Region. the Charyung Southern Plain Region, etc., and the climatic characteristics of the regions were identified.

  • Yeongweol sericite deposit of Gangwon Province is regarded as one of the sericite deposits derived from granitic rocks due to post-magmatic alkali metasomatism, and the other sericite deposit of the same origin is the Daehyun mine of Gyungbug Province. Sericite ores were originated from leucocratic granitic stocks of Cambrian-Triassic age which intruded the pegmatitic migmatite of the unknown age and granite of the Pre-cambrian age, respectivcly. Jangsan quartzite of the lowermost formations of the Paleozoic era, which played as the capping rock protected from the leakage of the hydrothermal solution. It is well known that those sericite deposits arc formed during formation of the geosyncline, and they are also situated in the margins of the Hambaeg Syncline. Leucocratic granites commonly contain pegmatites with tourmaline crystals, and are rich in potassium feldspars, and sodium plagioclase as well. Sericitized ores are mainly found as we go up to the higher elevations or to the margins of the stocks. And some of the Highest grade sericite ores show the monominerallic character composed of nearly pure sericite probably doc to the ultra greisenization. Chemical analysis shows higher $Na_{2}O$ and $K_{2}O$ contents $(2.00\sim7.03wt%)$ as the sericitizations arc preceded and they represent obvious greisenization. But low CaO contents $(0.05\sim4.51wt%)$ indicate that albitizations are so weak. Pyrophyllite of the Youngweol area is often accompanied by the sericite, indicating rather stronger thermal effect than the Daehyun mine. It is known that there are several Sn deposits originated from greisenization in the Taebaegsan region. And greisens are inclined to contain W, Mo and several REE's such as Be, Nb and Li, and so Taebaegsan region interbedded with lots of carbonate formations are still worthwhile to survey for those metallic deposits.

  • Pyeongan Supergroup (PS) in the Taebaeksan basin preserves key geological evidences to understand the tectonometamorphic evolution of the Songrim orogeny that affected the formation of the Korean Peninsula during the late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic. The aims of this paper therefore are to investigate the characteristics of the Songrim orogeny based on the previous results of metamorphism and deformations of the PS, and then to review geological significance and research necessity of the PS. Age distributions and Th/U ratio of detrital zircon in the PS indicate that sedimentary environment of the Taebaeksan basin during the late Paleozoic was arc-related foreland basin and retro-arc foreland basin at the active continental margin. In addition, the main magmatic activities occurred in the early Pennsylvanian and Middle Permian, thus sedimentation and magmatic activities occurred simultaneously. The PS was affected by lower temperature-medium pressure (M1) and medium temperature and pressure (M2) regional metamorphism during the Songrim orogeny. During M1, slate and phyllite containing chloritoid, andalusite, kyanite porphyroblasts intensively deformed by E-W bulk crustal shortening combined with folding and shearing. And garnet and staurolite porphyroblasts were formed during the N-S bulk crustal shortening accompained by M2. Such regional metamorphism of the PS is interpreted to occur in an area where high strain zone is localized during ca. 220-270 Ma. In order to elucidate the evolution of the Taebaeksan basin and tectonic features of the Songrim orogeny, it is expected that the study will be carried out such as the regional distribution of metamorphic zones developed in the PS, characteristics and timing of deformations, and late Paleozoic paleo-geography of the Taebaeksan basin.

  • In mineral exploration, there are many data sets which need to be created, processed and analyzed in order to discover a favorable mineralized zone. Recently, with Geographic Information System (GIS), such exploration data sets have been able to be systematically stored and effectively processed using computer technologies. In this study, most exploration data sets were first digitized and then rasterized. Furthermore, they were integrated together by using fuzzy set theory to provide a possibility map toward a target hypothesis. Our target hypothesis is "there is a skarn magnetite deposit in this study" and all fuzzy membership functions were made with respect to the target hypothesis. Test area is extended from 37:00N/l28:30E to 37:20N/I28:45E, approximately 20 km by 40 km. This area is a part of Taebaeksan mineralized areas, where the Sinyemi mine, a skarn magnetite deposit, is located. In final resultant map, high potential or possibility area coincides with the location of the Shinyemi mine. In this regard, we conclude the fuzzy set theory can be effectively applied to this study and provides an excellent example to define potential area for further mineral exploration.

  • Distribution status and economic analysis of packed radish in Korean markets(Chunbuk and Kangwon in producing area and Taebaek, Kyunggi, and Cheongyang for comparing tile quality) from November, 1999 to April, 2000 was surveyed. Distribution method and marketing of radish was different by producing areas and shipping methods. Quality of radish in the areas had a great difference, and especially standard deviation of volume of radish of Taebaek was highest. The packaging of radish was almost not, and in case of pack, corrugated paperboard was used as packaging material of outer packages. Non-packed radish in economic analysis was more economic than packed radish.

  • The situation and the problems of the management of public forest owend by Kangweon provincial and Taebaek municipal govenments were investigated throughout literature and field survey. The results were as follows; 1. Kangweon provincial forest is 25,896ha and Taebaek municipal forest is 550ha, which consists of Kangweon provincial forest, 470ha and municipal forest, 80ha. Taebaek city is responsible for the management of the province-owned forest in its administrative district in addition to its own forest. 2. Except San 1-2Changjookdong (443ha) which is leased by Dai Han Coal. Coporation for mining coal, the remaining forest (107ha) consists of 32 scattered, small-area forest lands. 3. Due to small area and dispersal of municipal forest, the management base for forest production is not sound and the management at present is nearly absent. Based on these actual conditions, the following suggestions are provided for the rationalization for the municipal forest management. First, scattered, small-scale forests should be gathered to prepare a management complex. Second, the sustaining production of timber should be attained through the estblishment of systematic management plan. Third, the reasonable system for forest land utiliztion shoule be established in consideration of the recreational use of public forest.

  • On the basin of RAPD analysis, genetic diversity and structure of the natural populations of Abies holophylla was estimated by AMOVA procedure. The average value of percent of polymorphic markers was 71.9%. Most variation existed among individuals within population(80.2%). Genetic differentiation among populations(${\Phi}_{ST}$) was 0.198. When the populations were grouped as two region(i.e., Taebaek and Sobaek Mountain Regions), 8.5% of the total genetic variation was explained as regional differences. The heterogeneity of molecular variance among populations was investigated with Bartlett's test, which revealed that populations of Mt. Taebaek and Mt. Gariwang were more heterogeneous. Generally, the populations of Taebaek Mountain Reion were more heterogeneous than those of Sobaek Mountain Reion. Finally, the applicability of AMOVA to the populations frenetic study was discussed in comparison with other measures of genetic differentiation which were widely used.
