The purpose of this study was to determine proper method for alternative row culture of two varieties to increase seed yield in soybean. The test varieties 'Hwangkeumkong' and 'Taekwangkong' which were planted monoculture of each variety, seeding after mixing same number of seeds of two varieties, 1-row alternation, 2row alternation, 2-row 'Hwangkeumkong' and 1-row 'Taekwangkong' and 1-row 'Hwangkeumkong' and 2row 'Taekwangkong'. Alternative planting of 1-row 'Hwangkeumkong' and 1-row 'Taekwangkong' resulted the highest canopy height and reduced lodging most effectively. The terminal and the 9th leaves of 'Taekwangkong' in alternative variety planting showed the higher photosynthetic ability than pure stand of that. Alternative planting of two varieties in every other row increased yield by $17\%$ in 'Hwangkeumkong' and by $8\%$ in 'Taekwangkong'.
A new soybean cultivar for soy-paste, 'Daeyang', was developed from the cross among 'Jangyeobkong', 'Hwaeomputkong' and 'Suwon192' by the soybean breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2007. A promising line, SS97214-80-1, was selected and named this line 'Milyang163'. It was prominent and had good result from regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) for three years from 2005 to 2007 and released as the name of 'Daeyang'. It has a determinate growth habit, purple flower, grey pubescence, yellow seed coat, yellow hilum, large spherical seed (25.2 g per 100 seeds). 'Daeyang' is resistant to soybean mosaic virus and moderately resistant to bacterial pustule, the major soybean disease in Korea. The average yield of 'Daeyang' was 2.58 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials (RYT) carried out for three years from 2005 to 2007 which was 3 percent higher than the check variety, 'Taekwang'.
'Nampung', a new soybean cultivar for soy-paste, was developed from the cross between Suwon190 and 'Pokwangkong' by soybean breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2007. A promising line, SS97215-S-S-20, was selected and designated as the name of Milyang162. It was prominent and had good result from regional adaptation yield trials(RYT) for three years from 2005 to 2007 and was released as the name of 'Nampung'. It has a determinate growth habit, white flower, brown pubescence, yellow seed coat, light brown hilum, medium spherical seed (19.9 grams per 100 seeds). 'Nampung' is resistant to soybean mosaic virus and bacterial pustule, the major soybean disease in Korea. It is possible to harvest of 'Nampung' using combine because of it's lodging tolerance, few branches, and high position of pod attachment. The average yield of 'Nampung' is 2.97 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials (RYT) carried out for three years from 2005 to 2007 which is 21 percent higher than the check variety, 'Taekwang'.
In order to evaluate suitability by processing for non-GM soybean cultivars such as Gaechuck#2, Jinyangkong and CJ#1 lacking lipoxygenase (LOX) and kunitz trypsin inhibitor (KTI) protein, physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity of Kanjang made from above soybean were compared to Kanjang made from a conventional cultivar (Taekwangkong). Proximate compositions of soybeans were similar for the 4 kinds cultivars. Total phenol and flavonoid contents were significantly higher in cultivars lacking LOX and KTI protein than the Taekwangkong. In Kanjang, contents of total and reducing sugar were higher in Taekwangkong Kanjang than Kanjang from made cultivars lacking LOX and KTI protein. Contents of total and amino type nitrogen were the highest in the Jinyangkong Kanjang. Mineral contents were higher in the Jinyangkong and CJ#1 Kanjangs, amino acid contents were higher in the Kanjang made from 3 cultivars lacking LOX and KTI protein than the Taekwangkong. Taste of the Jinyangkong Kanjang with higher sweety and savory was also found to be superior to that of others in overall acceptability evaluation. Total phenol and flavonoid contents in Kanjang were significantly higher in the Kanjang made from cultivars lacking LOX and KTI protein than the Taekwangkong. Radical scavenging activity of Kanjang was increased in the total phenol contents dependent on. Reducing power by ferric-reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) was significantly higher the Kanjang made from Gaechuck#2 and CJ#1 than the Taekwangkong. $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity was higher in Taekwangkong Kanjang than the other cultivars, but its activity was similar to Jinyangkong Kanjang. Therefore, higher nutritional composition, total phenol and flavonoids contents and antioxidant activity in the Kanjang made from soybean cultivars lacking LOX and KTI protein might be provide better benefit for manufacture of another their products.
The quality characteristics of three non-genetically modified (GM) LRS soybean cultivars free of LOX 1, 2 and 3, such as Jinyang, Hayoung and Daebok, were compared to the characteristics of Taekwang, a soybean with LOX 1, 2 and 3 and general contents of raffinose and stachyose. Taekwang was used as a control soybean. The weights of 100 for Taekwang and Hayoung soybeans were significantly higher than those of the other samples. The crude-protein contents of the Jinyang and Hayoung soybeans were significantly higher than the crude-protein content of the Taekwang soybeans. Similar tofu yields were observed in the Taekwang, Hayoung and Daebok soybeans. The highest tofu yield was observed in the Hayoung soybeans. The isoflavone contents of the soybeans and tofu were 1.4-1.6 times and 1.8-3.4 times higher than the contents of the control soybeans, respectively. The total phenol contents of the Hayoung and Daebok soybeans were significantly higher than the contents of the control soybeans. Additionally, the total phenol and flavonoid contents were significantly higher in the tofu made from the LRS cultivars than in the tofu made from the control cultivar. The antioxidant activities of the Taekwang soybeans were higher than the antioxidant activities of the LRS-cultivar soybeans. However, the antioxidant activities of tofu made from the LRS cultivars were significantly higher than the antioxidant activities of tofu made from the control cultivar. The results suggested that the soybeans of the LRS cultivars were suitable for tofu products. The Hayoung cultivar may be the most suitable due to its higher crude protein and isoflavone contents and its significant antioxidant activity.
A new soybean cultivar 'Daewang' was released by Agricultural Research & Extension Services, Gangwon Province in 2008. The Goals of breeding the variety was for large seed size, high yield, lodging tolerance and resistance to diseases such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and bacterial pustule. 'Daewang' was derived from the cross of GWS91, which has yellow seed coat, large seed size and late maturity, and 'Seokryang-putkong', which has large seed size and early maturity. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection were carried out from 2002 to 2007. It has a determinate growth habit with purple flower, yellow seed coat, yellow hilum and large seed weight (33.6 g per 100 seeds). The maturity date of 'Daewang' is 16 days later than the 'Taekwang'. It has a high content of total isoflavone ($1,851{\mu}g/g$). The average yield of 'Daewang' was 2.68 MT/ha in the regional yield trials (RYT) carried out in four locations in Gangwon province from 2004 to 2007 which was 4 percent higher than the check cultivar 'Taekwang'.
Three Korean soybean varieties, Dawon, Taekwang, and Myeongiju-namul were investigated for changes in isoflavone and oligosaccharides contents, and dry weight during germination. Soybeans were soaked for 10 hr in water, followed by 8 days germination at $20^{\circ}C$ under dark condition, Highest isoflavone content measured was Myeongju-namul (1.228 mg/g), followed by Taekwang (0.671 mg/g) and Dawon (0.661 mg/g). Total isoflavone content generally increased during initial germination and decreased thereafter. Maximal increase in isoflavone was 20-50%, particularly in aglycone type such as daidzein and genistein. Raffinose and stachyose contents decreased rapidly during germination, while that of sucrose showed relatively slow decrease. Dry weights of soybeans steadly decreased.
The emission of methane and nitrous oxide was measured from fields of upland rice and soybean. Rice cultivar, Daejinbyeo, was seeded in a row of 30 cm space in upland soil on April 28, 2001. The fields were irrigated with sprinkler irrigation or natural precipitation. Three soybean cultivars Jangyeobkong, Taekwangkong and Hwangkeumkong, were sown with seeding space of $60{\times}15cm$ on June 16, 2001. Gas samples were collected twice a week during the growth period, and methane and nitrous oxide were analyzed. Methane emission from upland rice field of sprinkler irrigation was $3.5kg\;CH_4\;ha^{-1}$. However, negative emission of methane, $-1.7kg\;CH_4\;ha^{-1}$, was observed in upland rice field of natural precipitation. Total nitrous oxide emission from upland rice field of sprinkler irrigation was $50.8kg\;N_2O\;ha^{-1}$, while the emission in the field of natural precipitation was $8.3kg\;N_2O\;ha^{-1}$. Global warming potentials (GWP) in the upland rice fields of sprinkler irrigation and natural precipitation were 15,822 and $2,216kg\;CO_2\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Methane emissions from fields of soybean cultivars Jangyeobkong, Taekwangkong and Hwangkeumkong were -14.7, -4.3 and $4.8kg\;CH_4\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Total nitrous oxide emissions from fields of soybean cultivars Jangyeobkong, Taekwangkong and Hwangkeumkong were 4.7, 4.6 and $3.0kg\;N_2O\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Total GWPs for soybean cultivars Jangyeobkong, Taekwangkong and Hwangkeumkong were 1152, 1323 and $1027kg\;CO_2\;ha^{-1}$, respectively.
Nymphal development, adult longevity, and oviposition of six different species of stink bugs were compared on seeds of a soybean cultivar, Taekwangkong, and two mung bean cultivars, Kyungseonnogdu and Jangannogdu in the insect rearing room ($28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, 16L:8D). Nymphs of six species of stink bugs normally developed on Taekwangkong seed. While nymphs of Riptortus clavatus, Halyomorpha halys, and Dolycoris baccarum developed on seeds of Kyungseonnogdu and Jangannogdu normally, all nymphs of Plautia stali, Piezodorus hybneri and Nezara antennata died after 4th instars on Kyungseonnogdu and after 3rd instars on Jangannogdu. Each instar period tended to be increased as nymphal stages were progressed. Nymphal period was shortest on Taekwangkong seed, followed by Kyungseonnogdu and Jangannogdu, irrelevant to stink bugs species. Emergence rate, adult longevity, and preoviposition period of 6 stink bugs were different depending on the reared seeds. Of 6 different species examined, Riptortus clavatus, Halyomorpha halys, and Dolycoris baccarum which fed on Jangannodu did not emerge, Plautia stali, Piezodorus hybneri, and Nezara antennata which fed on Jangannodu did not oviposit.
Lower field germination was observed in lipoxygenase- lacking soybean genotypes. This study was performed to understand seed-related traits after accelerated aging in response to planting date of soybeans. Two soybean cultivars, Jinpumkong (null lipoxygenase-2,3) and Jinpumkong 2 (lacking lipoxygenase-1, 2, 3) were evaluated for germination, and were compared with the cultivar, Taekwangkong containing lipoxygenase-1,2,3 isozymes. Greater seed coat cracking was shown in Jinpumkong and Jinpumkong 2 than Taekwangkong. Regardless of soybean genotypes, earlier planting resulted in greater seed coat cracking. After accelerated aging, seed fracturability and hardness of Jinpumkong and Jinpumkong 2 were lower than those of Taekwangkong. There was significant difference in germination percentage among soybean genotypes in response to planting date. Seeds obtained from late planting showed better germination ability. Accelerated aging resulted in lower germination percentages of Jinpumkong and Jinpumkong 2 than that of Taekwangkong, and showed higher electric conductivity in Jinpumkong and Jinpumkong 2 than Taekwangkong. After accelerated aging at 4$0^{\circ}C$ for thirty five days, germination percentages of Jinpumkong and Jinpumkong 2 were lower than that of Taekwangkong. Electric conductivity was increased continually as accelerated aging time became longer, and Jinpumkong and Jinpumkong 2 showed higher electric conductivity than Taekwangkong. Even though there were significant genotype differences in seed traits, further studies are needed to determine whether seed lipoxygenase ability is associated with germination ability.
