  • Devolatilization is an important mechanism in the gasification and pyrolysis of woody biomass, and has to be accordingly considered in designing a gasifier. In order to describe the devolatilization process of wood particle, there have been proposed a number of empirical correlations based on experimental data. However, the correlations are limited to apply for various reaction conditions due to the complex nature of wood devolatilization. In this study, a simple model was developed for predicting the devolatilization of a wood particle in a fluidized bed reactor. The model considered the drying, shrinkage and heat generation of intra-particle for a spherical biomass. The influence of various parameters such as size, initial moisture content, heat transfer coefficient, kinetic model and temperature, was investigated. The devolatilization time linearly increased with increasing initial moisture content and size of a wood particle, whereas decreases with reaction temperature. There is no significant change of results when the external heat transfer coefficient is over 300 $W/m^2K$, and smaller particles are more sensitive to the outer heat transfer coefficient. Predicted results from the model show a similar tendency with the experimental data from literatures within a deviation of 10%.

  • The laminar combustion characteristics of interacting coal particles in a convective flow are numerically investigated at particle arrangement and size difference. The numerical simulations, which use the two-step global reaction model to account for the surrounding gas effect, show the detailed interaction among the inter-space particles, undergoing devolatilization and subsequent char burning. Several parametric studies, which include the effect of the gas temperature (1700 K), high pressure(10 atm) and variation in geometrical arrangement of the particle diameter on the volatile release rate and the char combustion rate, have been carried out. The comparison indicates that the shift to the multiple particle arrangement resulted in the substantial change of the combustion characteristics and that the volatile release rate of the interacting coal particles exhibits a strong dependency on the particle spacing and size difference.

  • The burning characteristics of interacting coal particles in a convective flow are numerically investigated at various Reynolds numbers. The transient combustion of 2-dimensionally arranged particles, both the fixed particle distances of 5 radii to 20 radii horizontally and 4 radii to 24 radii vertically, is studied. The results obtained from the present numerical analysis indicate that the transient flame configuration and retardation of particle temperature augmentation with the horizontal or vertical particle spacing substantially influence devolatilization process and carbon conversion ratio of interacting particles. Volatile release and carbon conversion ratio of the second particle with decreasing horizontal and vertical particle spacing decrease gradually, whereas those of the first particle with decreasing vertical particle spacing increase due to flow acceleration. When the vertical particle spacing is smaller than $6R_0$, volatile release and carbon conversion ratio of the second particle decrease due to reduction of flame penetration depth and interference of oxygen diffusion by the first particle.

  • Biomass gasification is a promising technology in terms of clean energy and flexible options for end use such as heat, steam, electricity, gaseous or liquid fuels. In a gasification process, reduction of tar is very important because it can cause any mechanical problems and small tar implies high energy efficiency. However, generation and conversion mechanisms of tar have not been fully understood due to its complex nature. In this study, characteristics of tar generated from different gasification stages were investigated. Korean pine woodchip was used as feedstock and tar was sampled in a separate way during devolatilization and char gasification stage, investigated. As a result. more various kinds of hydro carbon compounds were identified in the devolatilization stage than char gasification stage because primary tar compounds are released mostly from pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose. When the reaction temperature increased up to $900^{\circ}C$, tar composition becomes simplified into about 10 aromatic compounds mostly with 1-4 rings without substitution up to phenanthrene. The sampled tar in the char gasification stage mostly contains 5-7 simple aromatic compounds.

  • Torrefaction is one of the methods to increase combustion calorific value and hydrophobicity of biomass. In this study, the effects of torrefaction on devolatilization, char reactivity and biomass structure were analyzed. Empty fruit bunch (EFB) and Kenaf biomass were used as fuels to be torrefied in the N2 environment at 200, 250 and $290^{\circ}C$. Devolatilization and char kinetics were analyzed by using TGA and biomass structure was investigated through petrography image. The reactivity showed different trends depending on the torrefaction temperature and biomass structure. The herbaceous biomass, Kenaf, was shown as high reactivity and thin wall structure. On the contrary, the woody biomass, EFB, had relatively low reactivity and thick wall structure.

  • The effect of physical properties of coal fuels and carbon particle on performance of DCFC (Direct Carbon Fuel Cell) was investigated. Shenhua and Adaro were selected as coal fuel and carbon particle was used for comparing with coal. The Ultimate, proximate, SEM, XRD, and BET analysis of samples were conducted. The component of char was more important than that of raw coal because the operating temperature of reactor is higher than devolatilization region of coal. The surface area and volume of pores affected significantly the performance of the system than content of fixed carbon or char rates. The performance of DCFC with carbon particle was in proportional to working temperature.

  • The objective of this research is to predict the TG curve of blends of bituminous coal and sub-bituminous coal during devolatilization. TSL (Thermal Shock Large) TGA was used for Experiments, and Coats-redfern method was used for reaction order calculation. Based on reaction order, sum method was verified to be suitable for a single coal, then, prediction and comparison of TG curve of coal blends was conducted using both of WSM (Weight Sum Method) and MWSM (Modified Weight Sum Method), where the latter was developed in this research. The presented experiment results and WSM & MWSM were showed to be reasonable using linear least square method. MWSM performed more accurately than WSM for the case that TG curve had different slopes and the case that sharp weight loss happened due to release of volatile matter. The results showed that it's possible to predict the thermal behavior of coal blends during devolatilization based on the thermal behavior of single coals.

  • This study was performed by using an LFR (laminar flow reactor), which can be used to carry out different types of research on coal. In this study, an LFR was used to analyze coal flames, tar and soot yields, and structures of chars for two coals depending on their volatile content. The results show that the volatile content and oxygen concentration have a significant effect on the length and width of the soot cloud and that the length and width of the cloud under combustion conditions are less than those under a pyrolysis atmosphere. At sampling heights until 50 mm, the tar and soot yields of Berau (sub-bituminous) coal, which contains a large amount of volatile matter, are less than those of Glencore A.P. (bituminous) coal because tar is oxidized by the intrinsic oxygen component of coal and by radicals such as OH-. On the other hand, at sampling heights above 50 mm, the tar and soot yields of Berau coal are higher than those of Glencore A.P. coal by reacted residual volatile matter, tar and light gas in char and flame. With above results, it is confirmed that the volatile matter content and the intrinsic oxygen component in a coal are significant parameters for length and width of the soot cloud and yields of the soot. In addition, the B.E.T. results and the images of samples (SEM) obtained from the particle separation system of the sampling probe support the above results pertaining to the yields; the results also confirm the pore development on the char surface caused by devolatilization.
