  • This paper presents a preliminary study of a convergent divergent nozzle in an afterburning turbofan engine of a supersonic aircraft engine. In order to design a convergent divergent nozzle, cycle model of a low bypass afterburning turbofan engine of which thrust class is 29,000 lbf at a sea level static condition is established. The cycle analysis at the design point is conducted by Gasturb 12 software and one dimensional gas properties at a downstream direction of the turbine are obtained. The dimension and configuration of an model turbofan engine are derived from take-off operation with wet reheat condition. The off-design cycle calculation is conducted at the all flight envelope on the maximum flight Mach number of 2.0 and maximum flight altitude of 15,000 m.

  • The gas turbine engine performance relies greatly on its component performance characteristics. Generally, engine manufacturers do not provide engine purchasers the component performance characteristics which can be obtained by lots of experimental tests at various operating conditions and big amount of expenses. In previous works the component maps have mostly been generated by scaling from a similar component map. However this scaling method has large error at off design points, specially in high altitude operation. Therefore this work proposes an inverse modeling method that can generate components maps of PT6A-67A turboprop engine using performance data provided by the engine manufacturer. In addition, evaluation can be made through comparison between performance analysis results using the performance simulation program including the generated compressor map and performance data.

  • CFD analyses of the three-dimensional turbulent flow in the impeller and diffuser of an axial flow pump including suction and discharge parts are presented and compared with experimental data. The purpose of the current study is to validate the CFD method for the performance analysis of the main coolant pump for SMART and to investigate the effect of suction and discharge shapes on the pump performance. To generate a performance curve, not only the design point but also the off-design points were computed. The results were compared with available experimental data in terms of head generated. At the design point, the analysis accurately predicts the experimental head value. In the range of the higher flow rates, the results are also in very good agreement with the experimental data, in magnitude but also in terms of slope of variation. For lower flow rates, the results shows that the analysis considering the suction and discharge well describe the typical S-shape performance curve of the axial pump.

  • The gas turbine engine performance is greatly relied on its component performance characteristics. Generally, acquisition of component maps is not easy for engine purchasers because it is an expensive intellectual property of gas turbine engine supplier. In the previous work, the maps were inversely generated from engine performance deck data, but this method is limited to obtain the realistic maps due to calculated performance deck data. Therefore this work proposes newly to generate more realistic compressor map from experimental performance test data. And then a realistic compressor map can be generated form those processed data using the proposed extended scaling method at each rotational speed. Evaluation can be made through comparison between performance analysis results using the performance simulation program including the generated compressor map and on-condition monitoring performance data.

  • The primary function of centrifugal compressor volute is to flow from the impeller and diffuser to the pipe system. The strength of the scroll vortex and flow pattern in the volute vary with the operating point. This is largely caused by the interaction between the impeller and the volute flow fields. The recirculation flow around the tongue and the scroll vortex can be used to understand the characteristics of the volute flow at off-design points. The present study aims to find the characteristics of a flow pattern in the diffuser and volute of a centrifugal compressor from the rectangular cross section of the volute. Measurements are carried out using PIV. The results obtained in this study show that the separation region around the tongue is reduced and that the recirculation flow increases as the flow coefficient decreases.

  • Test results of combustion chamber to verify the operation and the combustion performance at low pressure, design and off-design conditions for 30ton-class liquid rocket engine were described. The combustion chamber has nominal chamber pressure of 60 bar, propellant mass flow rate of 89 kg/s, and nozzle expansion of 12. Effects of chamber pressure on combustion characteristic velocity are largely affected by mixture ratio. The specific impulse of combustion chamber is proportional to the chamber pressure regardless of the mixture ratios. The present results can be used as the base to predict the combustion performance of large sized chamber at high pressure while demonstrating the possibility of low pressure firing test of large sized chamber.

  • A thermodynamic simulation method is developed for the process design and the performance evaluation of the gas turbine in IGCC power plant. The present study adopts four clean coal gases derived from four different coal gasification and gas clean-up processes as IGCC gas turbine fuel, and considers the integration design condition of the gas turbine with ASU(Air Separation Unit). In addition, the present simulation method includes compressor performance map and expander choking models for considering the off-design effects due to coal gas firing and ASU integration. The present prediction results show that the efficiency and the net power of the IGCC gas turbines are seperior to those of the natural gas fired one but they are decreased with the air extraction from gas turbine to ASU. The operation point of the IGCC gas turbine compressor is shifted to the higher pressure ratio condition far from the design point by reducing the air extraction ratio. The exhaust gas of the IGCC gas turbine has more abundant wast heat for the heat recovery steam generator than that of the natural gas fired gas turbine.

  • The present study has been carried out to develop a computational procedure for the analysis of the off-design performance in centrifugal compressors with vaneless diffusers by integrating empirical loss models and analytical equations. Losses in centrifugal compressors stem from a number of sources and their exact calculation is not yet possible. This study investigates several modeling schemes and shows that a fairly good prediction can be achieved by a proper selection of the most important flow parameters resulting form a meanline one-dimensional analysis. The performance maps for compressors are calculated and compared with measured performance maps. The off-design performance characteristics in terms of the pressure ratio vs. mass flow produced have generally correct forms. However, no universal means have been found to predict accurately the onset of surge. The prediction method developed through this study can serve as a tool to ensure good matching between parts and it can assist the understanding of the operational characteristics of general purpose centrifugal compressors.

  • This simulation method is developed by using GateCycle code for the performance evaluation of the gas turbine in IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) power plant that uses clean coal gas fuel derived from coal gasification and gas clean-up processes and it is integrated with ASU(Air Separation Unit). In the present simulation method, thermodynamic calculation procedure is incorporated with compressor performance map and expander choking models for considering the off-design effects due to coal gas firing and ASU integration. With the clean coal gases produced through commercially available chemical processes, their compatibility as IGCC gas turbine fuel is investigated in the aspects the overall performance of the gas turbine system. The predictions by the present method show that the reduction of the air extraction from gas turbine to ASU results in a remarkable increase in the efficiency and net power of gas turbines, but it is accompanied with a shift of compressor operation point toward to surge limit. In addition, the present analysis results reveal the influence of compressor performance characteristics of gas turbine have to be carefully examined in designing the ASU integration process and evaluating the overall performance parameters of the gas turbine in IGCC Power plant.

  • off-design conditions, supersonic air inlets often encounter the problem of aerodynamic instability, called inlet buzz, which causes the significant degradation of the engine performance. An experimental and numerical study was conducted to investigate the phenomenon of supersonic inlet buzz on a generic, axisymmetric, external-compression inlet with a single-surface center-body. It is understood the mechanism of buzz onset as proving that the origin of buzz is the flow choking induced by separation at the intake throat. Also it is observed the intermittent and continuous buzz mode as area ratio varies and understood the transition process through this study. The buzz frequency become to be higher as decreasing the area ratio, but for each area ratio, the frequency of pressure oscillation is the same at all points of intake.
