  • This study reduced the number of hair bleachings and used a hair steamer machine to reduce hair damage during hair coloring. In addition, such treatment was given, focusing on the use of hair mist. When the $L^{\ast}a^{\ast}b^{\ast}$ values for bleached hair were measured using a spectrum colorimeter, the mist steamer-based hair revealed higher brightness. Hair damage was low when moisture contents were high after hair drying with the use of the mist steamer machine. The mist treatment-less hair showed more blurred cuticle boundaries than mist-treated hair. In other words, this confirms that cuticles are protected by the use of a mist steamer machine during hair bleaching. It appears that this could minimize hair loss and meet clients' aesthetic needs and satisfaction during color bleaching/coloring.

  • This study attempted to investigate what color would fade more during hair bleaching and examine what should be done to make hair color last longer. For this, hair was colored differently in ash gray with permanent hair dyes and semi-permanent hair dyes each. Hair in multiple levels was created through such bleaching. Color retention was improved in consideration of the degree of color fading in sample hair. In terms of post-bleaching hair coloring, it was more efficient to color hair by eliminating redness without hair damage after shampooing with a permanent hair dye. Therefore, it is anticipated that the study results would be highly useful for beauty salons to find a base level in consideration of bleaching effects and make improve- ments according to hair retention and moisturizing effects.

  • In order to utilize sweet potatoes for the material of Takju, brewing experiments with raw sweet potatoes, sweet potato chips powder and its koji were conducted; and various tests were carried out on effect of the treatments of acid, alkali, polyphenol oxidase inhibitor, oxidizing and reducing agents upon the prevention against coloring of sweet potato chips by steaming, and on peeling effect of sweet potatoes by the alkali and heat treatments. The results obtained were as follows. 1) In the case of brewing with raw sweet potatose, each plot showed low acid and ethanol content, and its finished Takju had an undersirable color and odor. The plots which were mashed after peeling showed higher ethanol contents than the plots mashed without peeling. 2) In the case of brewing with sweet potato chips powder, each plot contained considerably more amount of ethanol than the plots brewed with raw sweet potatoes, white it contained less amount of acid. The ethanol contents of the plots using wheat bran koji were $10.5{\sim}11.4$ per cent 4 days after mashing, and were higher than those of the plots using malts powder. Their finished Takju was inferior in quality because of the lack of acid and being darkened gradually in process of time. 3) The kojies which were made of sweet potato chips powder with Neurospora sitophila or Aspergillus oryzae had good appearance, but the Takju mashes brewed with these contained remarkably less amount of ethanol. 4) Effect of the treatments of acid, alkali, polyphenol oxidase inhibitor and organic solvents such as ether and ethanol upon the prevention against coloring of sweet potato chips was not recognized. Alum and burnt alum were effective a little on the decolorization, and among the oxidizing and reducing agents tested, potassium permanganate was most effective. 5) Darkening of sweet potato chips powder in course of heating after mixing with water was not affected by pectin and amino acids, but by tannin. 6) Sweet potatoes were not peeled easily by friction after soaking in the boiling solution of 3 per cent alkali for 6 minutes and peeled in boiling water for 12 minutes. From the viewpoint of the results above mentioned, it seems to be necessary to study further on the isolation of microorganisms which are able to decompose the coloring substances and yeasts which are adequate for the fermentation of sweet potatoes in order to utilize sweet potatoes for Takju brewing, because brewing with raw sweet potatoes, sweet potato chips powder and its koji was unsuccessful, and effect of the various treatments on the decolorization of sweet potatoes was not recognized.

  • Lead dioxide ($PbO_2$) is an electrode material that is effective for organic pollutant degradation based on hydroxyl radical ($^{\bullet}OH$) attack. Representative parameters for $PbO_2$ electrodeposition are summarized to current, temperature, reaction time, concentration of Pb(II) and electrolyte agent. In this study, $Ti/PbO_2$ electrodes were fabricated by electrodeposition method under controlled reaction time, current density, temperature, concentration of $HNO_3$ electrolyte. Effects of deposition parameters on $^{\bullet}OH$ evolution were investigated in terms of electrochemical bleaching of p-Nitrosodimethylaniline (RNO). As major results, the $^{\bullet}OH$ evolution was promoted at the $PbO_2$ that was deposited in longer reaction time (1-90 min), lower current density ($0.5-50mA/cm^2$), higher temperature ($5-65^{\circ}C$) and lower $HNO_3$ concentration (0.01-1.0 M). Especially, the $PbO_2$ which was deposited in 0.01 M of lowest $HNO_3$ concentration by applying $20mA/cm^2$ for above 10 min was most effective on $^{\bullet}OH$ evolution. The performance gap between $PbO_2$s that was best and worst in $^{\bullet}OH$ evolution was about 41%. Among the properties of $PbO_2$ related on $^{\bullet}OH$ evolution performance, conductivity of $Ti/PbO_2$ significantly influenced on $^{\bullet}OH$ evolution. The increase in conductivity promoted $^{\bullet}OH$ evolution. In addition, the increase in crystal size of $PbO_2$ interfered $^{\bullet}OH$ evolution at surface of some $PbO_2$ deposits.

  • The effective extraction methods and chemical components of crude polysaccharides of ascidian tunics were investigated. Tow extraction conditions, autoclaving or enzyme treatment, were applied. The proximate composition of ascidian tunics was not much different between those dried in raw (containing pigments) and those acetone treated and dried (decolorized), showing $50\%$ of carbohydrate and $40\%$ of protein. It was possible to extract up to $10\%$ of crude polysaccharides from ascidian tunics regardless of the extraction methods, autoclaving or enzyme treatment. In case of the latter the extraction yield by neutrase was higher than that with alkalase (Novo co.) or mixture 2000 (Pacific chemical co.). The most effective enzyme concentration and extraction time appeared to be 24 hrs of extraction with $3\%$ neutrase. On the other hand, in autoclave treatment, 6 hrs extraction showed most desirable extraction yield, about $9.7\%$. The compositions of amino acid of decolorized ascidian tunic (acetone treated group) and the crude polysaccharide from the autoclaving (water solubles) or neutrase treatment (enzyme digestibles) were similar to each other. Histidine was the highest both in the neutrase and autoclave treatment group and the yield were $29.2\%,\;20.4\%$, respectively, followed by aspartic acid and glutamic acid. Among the minerals, the content of Ca was significantly high, followed by Mg and Na.

  • A study on tile processing of liquefied fish protein with a long self life and good solubility has been carried out for the effective utilization of sardine. The whole sadine was chopped, homogenized with same amount of water and then hydrolyzed by the addition of commercial proteolytic enzyme. The hydrolysate was centrifuged and the supernatant was decolorized with active carbon, desodorized by azeotropic distillation with toluene, xylene and cyclohexane. The liquefied sardine protein was then concentrated by rotary vacuum evaporator with the addition of starch. The use of $0.2\%$ commercial proteolytic enzyme to the weight of the whole sardine showed the optimum hydrolysis ratio at $55^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The liquefied sardine protein could be decolorized and also desodorized by the treatment with $15\%$ active carl]on at room temperature for 30 minuted. In the view point of lipid concentration and the solubility of the product, the liquefied sardine protein prepared by enzymic hydrolysis from the sardine protein concentrate was better than that prepared by enzymic hydrolysis from the whole sardine and sardine protein concentrate.

  • Formaldehyde(HCHO) may have a damage effect on Korean traditional textiles, because concentration is high and occurrence frequency is frequent at the exhibition room and storage area. Total 20 specimens were prepared using 4 different materials (silk, cotton, ramie, hemp) after dyeing with 5 colors (undyed, red, yellow, blue, black). The specimens were exposed to HCHO gas in the test chamber. The gas acceleration test was conducted to identify the deterioration of Korean traditional textiles according to HCHO concentration(0.5, 1, 10, 100, 500ppm), to temperature-humidity condition at HCHO 500ppm, and deterioration conditions at HCHO 500ppm. Optical, chemical, and physical evaluation was carried out after the exposure. The results, color difference, grey scale rating, formate($HCO_2{^-}$) of some textiles increased at 500ppm, while pH decreased at 500ppm. Also, color difference, grey scale rating, formate($HCO_2{^-}$) of some textiles increased double damage at high temperatures & humidity, high humidity condition. But, damages of accelerated degradation textiles were slight, because of degradation degree and degradation products. The results suggest that determined the damage to the korean traditional textile, damage level, damage-weighted condition, damage to accelerated degradation textiles. In addition, formaldehyde damaged to yellowing of red textiles, bleaching of accelerated degradation textiles, formic acid damaged to bleaching of total 20 specimens.

  • In this study, outstanding white rot fungi for biodegradation of organosolv lignin were selected on the basis of their ligninolytic enzyme system. Fifteen white rot fungi were evaluated for their ability to decolorize Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) in SSC and MEB medium, respectively. Six white rot fungi (Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, Ceriporia lacerate, Fomitopsis insularis, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Polyporus brumalis, and Stereum hirsutum) decolorized RBBR rapidly in SSC medium within 3 days. The protein contents as well as the activities of manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase for 6 selected fungi were determined on the SSC medium with and without organosolv lignin. Interestingly, extracellular protein concentrations were determined to relative higher for S. hirsutum and P. chrysosporium in the presence of organosolv lignin than others. On the other hands, each fungus showed a different ligninolytic enzyme pattern. Among them, F. insularis resulted the highest ligninolytic enzyme activities on incubation day 6, indicating of 1,545 U/mg of MnP activity and 1,259 U/mg of laccase activity. In conclusion, $STH^*$ and FOI were considered as outstanding fungi for biodegradation of organosolv lignin, because $STH^*$ showed high extracellular protein contents and ligninolytic enzyme activities over all, and ligninolytic enzyme activities of FOI were the highest among white rot fungi used in this study.
