Low temperature diesel combustion was achieved via a combination of late injection timing ($8.5^{\circ}$ CA BTDC to $0.5^{\circ}$ CA BTDC) and heavy exhaust gas recirculation (37% to 48%) with ultra low sulfur Swedish diesel fuel in a 1.7L common rail direct injection diesel engine. When injection timing is retarded at a certain exhaust gas recirculation rate, the particulate matter and nitrogen oxides decease simultaneously, while the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide increase. Hydrocarbon speciation by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector reveals that the ratio of partially burned hydrocarbon, i.e., mainly alkenes increase as the injection timing is retarded and exhaust gas recirculation is increased. The two most abundant hydrocarbon species are ethene which is a representative species of partially burned hydrocarbons, and n-undecane, which is a representative species of unburned hydrocarbons. They may be used as surrogate hydrocarbon species for performing a bench flow reactor test for catalyst development.

Dissolved aliphatic hydrocarbon concentrations in the surface seawater were investigated to describe their distribution and elucidate their sources in the Cheju-Korea Straits region (33$^{\circ}$30‘-34$^{\circ}$N 125$^{\circ}$-128$^{\circ}$E). Seawater sampling was made in spring and autumn in 1998. A large temporal and spatial variability were observed in the dissolved hydrocarbon concentrations in the region. The sources of dissolved hydrocarbons in seawater were elucidated based on the molecular concentrations of n-alkanes and pristane. Dissolved hydrocarbons in the surface water appears to be largely originated from phytoplankton and petroleum in the southern Yellow Sea (125$^{\circ}$), and terrigenous and petrogenic in the Cheju-Korea Straits region in April 1998. In September 1998, dissolved hydrocarbons in the surface waters were largely derived from phytoplanktons and terrestrial material in the Cheju-Korea Soaits region.

AVO analysis was conducted on hydrocarbon-bearing structures by applying the crossplot and offset-coordinate amplitude polynomial techniques. To evaluate the applicability of the AVO analysis, it was conducted on synthetic data that were generated with an anticline model, and field data from the hydrocarbon-bearing Colony Sand bed in Canada. Analysis of synthetic data from the anticline model demonstrates that the crossplot method yields zero-offset reflection amplitude and amplitude variation with negative values for the upper interface of the hydrocarbon-bearing layer. The crossplot values are clustered in the third quadrant. The results of AVO analysis based on the coefficients of the amplitude polynomial are similar to those from the crossplots. These well correlated results of AVO analysis on field and synthetic data suggest that both methods successfully investigate the characteristics of the reflections from the upper interface of a hydrocarbon-bearing layer. Analysis based on the incident-angle equation facilitates the application of various interpretation methods. However, it requires the conversion of seismic data to an incident angle gather. By contrast, analysis using coefficients of the amplitude polynomial is cost-effective because it allows examining amplitude variation with offset without involving the conversion process. However, it warrants further investigation into versatile application. The two different techniques can be complement each other effectively as AVO-analysis tools for the detection of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
Aliphatic cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of different developmental stages of the spot clothing wax cicada, Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) were analyzed using GC and GC-MS. The numbers of carbons in the major CHCs of each developmental stage 32, 33, 28, 38, 37 in the egg, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instar nymphal stages, and adults, respectively. The cuticle of Lycorma delicatula contains mainly methyl-branched 9-methylheptacosane (15.11%) in the egg stage, and a high proportion of n-heptacosane in nymphal stages (15.75, 22.42, 25.04, and 23.11 % in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instars, respectively). In contrast, male and female adults had high proportions of n-nonacosane (13.42 and 16.55%). The chemical constituents of CHCs were classified into five groups (n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes, trimethylalkanes, olefins) and group profiles of each developmental stage were compared. Egg surface was composed mainly monomethylalkanes (45.39%), a saturated hydrocarbon. Nymph CHCs consisted primarily of n-alkanes (37.63 to 46.12%). There was a difference between adult male and female CHCs. However, both contained n-alkanes and monomethylalkanes. CHCs with trimethyl or double bonded structure were rare in all stages.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a kind of toxic environmental pollutants and has been accumulated usually in marine sediments. Due to their potential hazardous to human, removal of PAHs from environments has been great concern. In the present study, the effect of microbial inoculation and the supplementation of mixed form cyclodextrin (M-CD) was assessed in the pre-sterilized or nonsterilized microcosms for optimizing operational conditions for ex situ bioremediation of sediments contaminated by PAHs. Activity of electron transport system (ETSA) was increased by the addition of M-CD regardless of inoculation of microorganisms in microcosms without sterilization. The degradation rate of PAHs in sterilized microcosms was app. 9-20% by the inoculation of single strain and 24-37% by the inoculation of microbial consortium supplemented with 1% M-CD, respectively. The degradation was not observed in microcosms without sterilization under the same conditions. The proportion of inoculated microorganisms also decreased in nonsterilized microcosms. Signals of inoculated bacteria were decreased to detection limit after 2 days in the microcosms without M-CD. In conclusion, microbial inoculation with appropriate carbon sources and removal of natural flora and grazers are required for the efficient ex situ bioremediation of sediments contaminated by PAHs in bioslurry reactor.
Hydrocarbon dew point(HCDP), a property which is the most generally used for describing natural gas condensation, is a very important parameter of natural gas quality specifications. HCDP is strongly influenced by the concentration of the heavier hydrocarbon components, especially $C_6+$, so, along with compliance with gas quality specifications, build up of procedures for obtaining accurate HCDP is essential for gas transmission company, because hydrocarbon condensation present may cause serious operational and safety problems. This study has been carried out in an attempt to measure HCDP accurately by the automatic hydrocarbon dew point meter under the actual field conditions. Measured HCDP also has been compared with calculated HCDP using the composition determined by gas chromatograph and industry accepted equation of state at multiple pressures, along with the cricondentherm. The test results are 1) the automatic hydrocarbon dew point meter was able to measure stable HCDP continuously 2) the automatic hydrocarbon dew point meter has been performed reference measurement by pure propane with a known dew point from literature, and 3) A meaningful differences was observed when comparing the automatic hydrocarbon dew point meter and gas chromatograph results for synthetic standard gas mixtures and real gas mixtures.
Contamination of groundwater by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was investigated for 168 groundwater wells in Ulsan area to study the natural attenuation of organic compounds in the aquifers. As groundwater contamination by VOCs is closely related to land use, 168 groundwater samples were classified into 4 different groups; agricultural, forestry, industrial, and residential & business. From analysis 65 out of 168 groundwater samples contained more than one VOC. Analysis of samples were performed fir 36 halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons and 25 petroleum hydrocarbons set up by NAWQA of US geological survey. Twelve petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in 26 groundwater wells, but their concentrations were less than 1.5 g/L except for MTBE. Twenty three chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, composed of 11 methanes, 6 ethanes and 6 ethenes, were detected in 63 groundwater samples. The range of methanes concentration was $ND\~330\;/gL,\;ethanes\;ND\~84\;gL$, and PCE and their derivatives $ND\~62\;g/L$. As the study area was comprised of the aerobic/denitrification zones and $Fe^{+3}$ redox condition, most of petroleum hydrocarbons were degraded well, while halogenated hydrocarbons were slowly biodegradation.
Sediment samples were collected from the stations 0101-0921 located between N $32^{\circ}$30'~$34^{\circ}$30' and E $123^{\circ}$30'-$128^{\circ}$30' during July 31-August lO. 1988. The distributions of total heterotrophic bacteria, freshwater bacteria and hydrocarbon degrading bacteria were studied. Each bacterial distribution was in the range of $3{\times}10^{5}~9.2{\times}10^{6}CFU/cm^{3}$sediment, $3{\times}10^{3}~2.1{\times}10^{6}CFU/cm^{3}$ sediment and $2{\times}10^{4}~6.2{\times}10^{6}CFU/cm^{3}$ sediment. respectively. The percent of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria against total heterotrophic bacteria was 0.7-73,2 % which was much higher than other marine sediments reported. These values were statistically analyzed with the percent of freshwater bacteria against total heterotrophic bacteria. These two parameters were well correlated with the correlation coefficient r= 0.60058 (n=34) and P=0.OOO2. This means that the distributions of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria and freshwater bacteria in the research area were affected together by the fresh water discharge into the sea environment. Therefore it can be concluded that the distribution of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria in the sediment of South Sea was affected by petroleum hydrocarbon input from terrestrial region through rivers.
