  • The microwave carbonization of rice chaff was performed, and their kinetics were compared to those of conventional thermal carbonization. Thermal carbonization was carried out at $300-600^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The weight loss and C/H mole ratio remarkably increased as increase of temperature, while there was no carbonization by microwave dielectric heating in spite of increasing incident power and irradiation time. However, microwave carbonization was successfully performed by addition of 6 wt% of thermal carbonized rice chaff, it's C/H mole ratio is larger than 3.0, as a catalytic initiator to uncarbonized rice chaff, and the kinetics was depended on the incident power and irradiation time, resulting in the coincide with thermal carbonization to the Arrhenius equation. The activation energy of microwave carbonization was quite low as compared to that of thermal carbonization, while the kinetic constant was large. This is due to the internal volumetric heating characteristics of carbonized rice chaff by microwave. The effect of ash, and C/H mole ratio and amount of carbonized rice chaff were investigated on microwave carbonization.

  • This research was to investigate the adsorption characteristics of charcoals of major Korean wood species (thinned trees) and wood-based materials. As carbonization time and temperature increased, methylene-blue adsorption (MBA) of charcoals of thinned trees and wood-based materials increased. Pinus koraiensis charcoal showed the highest MBA. MBA of softwoods was higher than that of hardwoods. There was a negative correlation between air-dried specific gravity before carbonization and MBA of carbonized thinned trees. The MBA of wood-based materials showed similar value, but wood-based materials in MBA was lower than thinned woods. Surface area and total pore volume of thinned trees and wood-based materials increased as carbonization temperature increased. The species showing highest MBA appeared to have the highest surface area at the carbonization temperature of 600℃ as well. There was a positive correlation between surface area, total pore volume and MBA of charcoals. The charcoal of wood-based materials generally exhibited micro pores.

  • In manufacturing the crack-free carbonized boards using fiberboards, shrinking ratio, weight loss and density variation of carbonized boards at each carbonization temperature were investigated. Fiberboards with thickness of 3, 4.5, 6, and 18 mm were carbonized while pressed with pressure plates at different temperature from $400^{\circ}C$ to $1,000^{\circ}C$ using a ordinary laboratory furnace. Either of crack or twist was not observed in fiberboards by adapting the pressing carbonization method. The ratios of shrinkage of length, width, and thickness were 10~25%, 12~25%, and 28~48%, respectively, and shrinkage ratio of thickness was higher than those of length and width with increasing the carbonization temperature. Weight loss tended to increase with increasing the carbonization temperature, but low correlation between weight loss in thickness of fiberboards and carbonization temperature was observed. Density of 3 mm carbonized hardboard had the highest value and it tended to increase with increasing the carbonization temperature.

  • The influence factors for char yield in the carbonization process of natural cellulose are the carbonization temperature, the heating rate and the atmosphere in the furnace. In general, it is well known that the improvement of char yield is expected under the conditions of the lower carbonization temperature, the slower heating rate and the presence of inert gas in the furnace. In this study, it has been investigated the effect of the heating rate control with sulfuric acid as a dehydrating agent for the improvement of char yield in the carbonization process of natural cellulose. The cellulose treated with sulfuric acid has shown the weak dependency of heating rate in char yield, whereas the untreated cellulose has shown the strong dependency. These findings clearly suggest that it can be useful to control heating rate with appropriate dehydrating agent in the carbonization process to improve the char yield and shortening the carbonization time.

  • This research was performed to evaluate adsorption behavior of woody charcoals obtained from wood powder, fiber and bark of spruce (Abies sibirica Ledeb). The wood materials were carbonized at various temperatures for 1 hour using experimental rotary kiln without any inert gas. The adsorption capacity of iodine and toluene, specific surface area and removal efficiency of acetic acid and ammonia gas of those charcoals were measured. The higher was the temperature for carbonization, the lower yields of charcoals were. Ash content of bark charcoal was higher than that of wood powder charcoal or fiber charcoal. Elemental analysis of woody charcoal revealed that the content of carbon was gradually lincreased as carbonization temperature was higher. When carbonization temperature was higher, adsorption capacity of woody charcoals for iodine was much improved. Wood powder charcoal and fiber charcoal were more effective for iodine adsorption rather than bark charcoal. Capacity of toluene adsorption was the highest in the charcoal of $600^{\circ}C$. Charcoals produced at high temperature efficiently removed acetic acid gas, while charcoals carbonized at low temperature such as $400^{\circ}C$ were proper to remove ammonia gas. This difference may be explained that the acidity of charcoals depends on the carbonization temperature: charcoals of low temperature indicate acidic property, while those of high temperature turned to alkaline.

  • Repeated impregnation and carbonization processes were performed to prepare high-density woodceramics using a sawdust board. The physical properties were investigated to confirm morphological and structural changes of one-time and two-time phenolic resin-treated and carbonized woodceramics. As comparing between one-time and two-time carbonized woodceramics, the weight and the density of the two-time carbonized woodceramics decreased with an increase of the carbonization temperature. When the carbonization temperature was $600^{\circ}C$, the weight increased by 21.7% and density increased by 20.6% from $0.68g/cm^3$ to $0.82g/cm^3$, respectively, as a maximum value.

  • Tar is often produced during the carbonization of cellulose that limits the formation fibrous structure of the carbonized sample. This problem was reduced by applying a high temperature $(up\;to\;800{\circ}C)$ during carbonization process. Alternatively, dry cellulose was immersed in toluene and ultrasonicated prior to carbonization. In both cases, complete fibrous structures were not achieved. The formation of tar was reduced by the heat treatment of cellulose in the presence of HCI vapor before carbonization process. Such treatment before carbonization yielded mostly the fibrous structures of the carbonized sample as evident from SEM analysis. Similar results were found when the cellulose was subjected to a heat treatment in an inert condition followed by the removal of tar by the oxidation process prior to the carbonization.

  • The objective of this research is to analyze a possibility for the utilization of carbonized bark and develop the technique for carbonization of bark for using as the adsorbent, the soil improvement agent, the carrier for microbial activity, health products, and so on. The properties of bark charcoals such as methylenehlue adsorption (MBA), equilibrium moisture content (EMC), far infra rad emissivity, pH, water retention and caloric value were analyzed. The MBA values of bark charcoals carbonized for 8 hr of carbonization time at $800^{\circ}C$ of carbonization temperature for Larix leptolepis, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida were greater than 110 mg/g. The bark charcoals pH values of all three species that were carbonized for 4 hr of carbonization time at $400^{\circ}C$ of carbonization temperature was 6.6 and carbonized for 4 hr at 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ was about 9. Therefore the bark charcoals of those species could be used as charcoals if the carbonization temperature and time were controlled.

  • Pine bark was carbonized by using a small-scale experimental kiln and three different types of large-scale kilns (simple (400-$500^{\circ}C$), improved (600-$700^{\circ}C$) and special kiln (800-$1,000^{\circ}C$). The physical properties and pore structures of the bark charcoals prepared were analyzed. When the bark was carbonized at various temperatures ranging from 500 to $900^{\circ}C$in the presence of nitrogen, carbonization yield decreased rapidly with increasing carbonization temperature and it remained constant from 700 to $900^{\circ}C$. The carbonization yield of the bark was 16 - 18% higher than that of pine wood. The BET specific surface areas and iodine values increased with a decrease in carbonization yield. The BET specific surface areas of the bark charcoals reached about 400 -$500m^2/g$ for carbonization yield of 32-40%. The pine wood charcoal prepared at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 min resulted in a more microporous structure, whereas the bark charcoal prepared at the same condition was more mesoporous. The carbonization yields and physical properties such as iodine values and BET specific surface areas of bark charcoals prepared by using the large-scale kilns were very similar to those of the small-scale kiln. The results indicated that the pine bark could be used as starting material to produce good quality charcoal having a large specific surface area and a high carbonization yield.

  • Experiments on carbonization were conducted using fish offal generated from fish market for the purpose of resource recycling. Elemental composition of fish offal and effect of carbonation temperature on the overall yield were investigated. Carbon and hydrogen contents of fish offal were 51.1% and 7.6%, respectively in view of elemental composition. Particularly, nitrogen and sulfur contents were as high as 9.8% and 1.0%, respectively. These values suggests that odor problem of fish offal can be serious. Comparing elemental composition of fish offal with other waste materials, it is thought that carbon and hydrogen contents are considerably high. These implies that thermal disposal will be the best option for final disposal method of fish offal. As a results of carbonization experiments on Mackerel, Hairtail, Croaker and mixed sample of Mackerel, Hairtail and Croaker, carbonization patterns were quite similar irrespective of fish species. Carbonization yield was varied significantly depending on carbonization temperature at the carbonization time of 5 minutes and 10 minutes. When the carbonization time was maintained longer than 30 minutes, yield variation depending on time variation at each temperature was insignificant. Thus, it can be concluded that effect of carbonization time on overall yield was minor when the carbonization time was maintained longer than 30 minutes. Primary vaporization in carbonization conducted at the temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ was minor. Thus, difference of yield between temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ was appeared greatly. It can be concluded that yield difference depending on carbonization temperature can be neglected if the carbonizing temperature exceed $600^{\circ}C$ and carbonizing time exceed 10 minutes at the same time.
