Computational Simulation of Hydrocarbon Adsorption in a Packed Column (탄화수소 흡착 컬럼의 전산모사 특성)

  • Computational simulations of adsorption columns were carried out to investigate the removal characteristics of VOCs from a laundry shop. n-Decane was selected as the representative component among the VOCs emitted, and the activity of the adsorbents, such as activated carbon, was evaluated using commercial CFD code. The mathematical framework was composed of continuity and Navier-stokes equations, and the simulation was performed using the Matlab program. The adsorption isotherms of LDF, Freundlich, and Langmuir were evaluated, and the adsorption amount of the adsorption isotherms with the adsorption parameter was compared. The simulation was carried out using a particle porosity, dispersion coefficient, particle density, bed diameter, and bed length of 0.79, 42.4 ㎠/min, 485 g/L, 2.0 cm, and 2.5 cm, respectively. The effect of the gas velocity, dispersion coefficient, and voidage on the adsorption amount was compared in the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The simulation was carried out in the velocity range of 50 to 200 cm/min, dispersion coefficient range of 100 to 400 ㎠/min, and particle porosity range of 0.66 to 0.79. The simulation results of activated carbon with benzene coincided with the Langmuir isotherm. Three types of adsorption isotherm were compared under similar conditions, and the simulation results showed the efficient adsorption condition for hydrocarbons.

  • Exhaust emissions from vehicles are the main source of air pollution. Many researchers are trying to find the way of reducing vehicle emissions, especially in the cold transient period of the FTP-75 test. In this study, UEGI (Unburned Exhaust Gas Ignition) technology, warming up the close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) by igniting the unburned exhaust mixture using two glow plugs installed in the upstream of the catalyst, was developed. It was applied to an exhaust system with a hydrocarbon adsorber to ensure an effective reduction of HC emission during the cold start period. Results showed that the CCC reaches the light-off temperature (LOT) in a shorter time compared with the baseline exhaust system, and HC and CO emissions are reduced significantly during the cold start.

  • 포항가속기의 초고진공 세정기술은 초고진공 영역에서의 기체방출을 최소화하기 위한 것으로 발생한 오염원을 추적하여 큰 오염원 부터 시작하여 단계적으로 진행해 미세한 오염원 을 제거해 나가는 방법을 적용하고 있다. 이러한 극청정한 진공표면을 얻기 위해서는 표면과 오염물질 사이의 결합에너지를 극복해야 한다. 오염물 제거 방법으로는 물리.전기.화학적인 방법을 모두 적용하며 그리스 및 절삭유를 비롯해 흡착된 탄화수소와 불순물 성분 또는 산소나 황과 같은 반응성 원소와의 화합물 등을 효과적으로 제거한다. 또한, 세정 과정 에서 생성될 수 있는 수소, 불규칙한 산화물, 질화물, 염화물, 그리고 탄수화물을 최소화하여 초고진공 영역에 도달할 수 있는 방법을 제공한다. 본 논문에서는 포항가속기 연구소의 초고진공 환경을 확보하기 위한 화학세정 설비 및 응용기술, 주요 진공 구성재료의 표면 분석 결과를 소개하고자 한다.

Removal of Harmful Gas with Wood or Bark Charcoal (목질 및 수피탄화물에 의한 기상 유해가스 흡착제거)

  • To estimate removal ability of harmful gas by charcoal, we carbonized Red oak (Quercus mongolica Fischer) wood and Larch (Larix leptoepis) bark at $300^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. Gas removal ratios was increased with carbonization temperature but there is no difference between wood and bark charcoal. In the case of bad smell and VOC gas, woody charcoal including bark charcoal carbonized at $300^{\circ}C$ showed low removal ratio, less than 50%, whereas woody charcoals which was carbonized at more than $600^{\circ}C$ reached almost 100% removal ratio to bad smell gas such as trimethylamine, methymercaptan, hydrogen sulfide, and to VOC such as benzene, toluene, xylene in $5{\ell}$ tedler bag with each gas of 100 ppm. It was thought that because charcoals carbonized at high temperature, for example, $600^{\circ}C$ or $900^{\circ}C$ have enough specific surface area to adsorb gas of 100 ppm. Moreover these charcoals rapidly removed almost gas in 10 minutes. However, acetylene, $SO_2$ and $NO_2$, charcoals which was carbonized more than $600^{\circ}C$ and which showed high removal ratio had low gas removal ratio of 40% at even 4 hours adsorption. It was concluded that adsorptive ability of woody charcoal was mainly influenced with carbonizing temperature, so that different charcoals carbonized at different temperature brings different gas removal ratio because these charcoals have not only different physical factor such as specific surface area but different chemical characteristic such as functional group, expected.

  • UEGI (Unburned Exhaust Gas Ignition) is an alternative method for fast light-off of a catalyst. It ignites the unburned exhaust mixture using two glow plugs installed in the upstream of the close-coupled catalysts. In addition, a hydrocarbon adsorber was applied to the UEGI, for more effective reduction of HC emission. Engine bench tests show that the CCC reaches the light-off temperature laster than the baseline exhaust system and HC and CO emissions are reduced significantly during the cold start. From the vehicle test, it was observed that a few amount of HC emission was reduced even the catalysts were aged. It is expected to develop a solution kit applicable to a new vehicle or used one, to meet the emission regulation

  • 최근 크로메이트 피막의 대체로서 실란 커플링제를 사용한 화성처리가 주목되고 있다. 실란 커플링제는 $R^{\prime}-(CH_2)_n-Si(OR)_3$로 나타내며 OR은 가수분해 가능한 메톡시기, 에톡시기 등의 알콕시기이다. OR기는 가수분해하여 반응성이 높은 시라놀기(-SiOH)를 생성하여 금속표면에 흡착하기 쉽다. 이후, 건조할 때 탈수 축합하여 공유결합이 가능하다. R'는 탄화수소에 한정되지 않고 성질이 다른 원소의 관능기를 나타내며 아미노(amino)기, 글리시딜(glycidyl)기, 멜캅토(melcapto)기, 비닐(vinyl)기를 들 수 있다. 실란 커플링제 가운데 아미노기를 갖는 실란 커플링제는 아연도금 강판을 포함한 다양한 금속의 내식성을 향상시킬 수 있는 화합물의 하나이다. 본 연구에서는 아미노기를 함유한 실란 커플링제에 인산 수용액을 도포하여 수세하지 않고 건조하여 피막을 형성시켰다. 또 부식거동 조사를 목적으로 아미노기를 함유한 실란 커플링제를 사용하여 초산첨가의 경우와 비교하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 대기 중의 오존농도 증기에 크게 기여하는 오존전구물질인 탄화수소계 휘발성유기화합물 중 가장 휘발성이 큰 $C_2$-C$_3$계열의 오존전구물질을 분석하기 위하여 흡착농축 분석법을 이용한 효율적인 분석법을 확립하고자 하였다. $C_2$계열의 탄화수소류의 경우 휘발성이 매우 커서 일반적으로 -3$0^{\circ}C$의 저온에서 강한 흡착제를 이용하여 재농축하는 과정을 거쳐서 분석하는 방법을 사용하고 있다. 그러나, 공기 중 상대습도가 높을 경우 수분에 의한 흡착제의 응결현상으로 인해 농축트랩이 막히는 등의 여러 가지 문제점을 유발할 수 있으므로 철저히 수분을 제거하여야 하는 것으로 알려져 있다.   • 최근 자동차 대체 연료로 가솔린에 10% 무수에탄올이 혼합된 Gasohol 사용에 관한 관심이 고조되고 있으며, 이는 Gasohol이 자동차 배기 가스중의 일산화탄소 및 탄화수소 함유량을 감소시켜 대기 오염을 줄일 수 있기 때문이다. Gasohol에 사용되는 무수에탄올의 농도는 99.5% 이상이어야 하며, 이러한 고순도의 에탄올을 제조하기 위해서는 물과 에탄올의 공비 혼합물(95.6% 에탄올)로부터 공비증류, 분자체 흡착, 투과증발과 같은 분리 조작을 이용하여 물을 제거하는 공정이 필요하다. 현재 에탄올 탈수에는 공비증류가 많이 사용되고 있으나 공비증류는 에너지 사용량이 많을 뿐더러 유독한 Entrainer를 첨가하기 때문에 투과증발과 같은 저 에너지 소비형, 환경친화적인 공정으로의 전환이 이루어지고 있다. 에탄올 탈수용 투과증발 플랜트는 전세계 20여개가 가동되고 있으며, 상업화된 플랜트의 대부분은 독일의 Deutsche Carbone사가 제조한 PVA/PAN 투과증발 복합막을 사용하고 있다. 투과증발 시스템은 물에 대한 친화도가 높은 투과증발막 및 모듈, 기타 분리 구동력을 높여주기 위한 Heater, 진공펌프, 냉각기, 열 교환기 등의 주변 설비로 구성되며, 투과증발 시스템 개발을 위해서는 우수한 막/모듈 제조와 아울러 최적 공정 설계 기술 개발이 필수적이라 하겠다.

  • The study was carried out to investigate adsorption characteristic on hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S) and methylmercaptan (CH$_3$SH) odor gas using the char made by a thermal decomposition of sewage sludge. The fixed bed adsorption experiments of the optimum L/D ratio could be 1.0, and adsorption capacity and break point increased with the increase of temperature. A simultaneous adsorption characteristic of H$_2$S and CH$_3$SH increased in breakthrough time and adsorption capacity more than single adsorption experiment, and CH$_3$SH had higher effective diffusivities than H$_2$S in same condition. The adsorption capacity of CH$_3$SH increased with fast velocity. When it was compared the produced absorbent with commercial activated carbon, As to adsorbent amount, it was H$_2$S 77% and CH$_3$SH 80% of commercial activated carbon.

Development of standard gas mixtures of hydrocarbons in methane contained in aluminum cylinders (알루미늄 실린더에서 혼합 탄화수소(C6-C10) 표준가스 개발)

  • As the demand for natural gas increases with industrial development, the supply of natural gas is expected to become unstable with a shortage of imported natural gas. It is hence necessary to meet this demand by introducing and developing various types of natural gas, such as pipeline natural gas (PNG) and substituted natural gas (SNG), in addition to liquefied natural gas (LNG). The components included in PNG as well as their concentrations must be measured accurately, and a standard gas should be developed to accurately measure hydrocarbons ($C_6-C_{10}$), which are trace components included in natural gas. The components in the primary standard gas mixtures (PSMs) developed in the present study were hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, and decane with concentrations of $10-30{\mu}mol/mol$ with methane as the balance gas. Standard hydrocarbon ($C_6-C_{10}$) gas mixtures were prepared in aluminum cylinders by a gravimetric method with traceability following ISO 6142 with raw material gases, for which the purity of each component was analyzed completely. The prepared standard gas mixtures were analyzed by to evaluate the preparation consistency between the standard gas mixtures, the adsorbability of the cylinders, the variation of the stability, and the uncertainty. The results showed that aluminum cylinders have little adsorptive loss on their internal surfaces with excellent long-term stability. The developed standard gas mixture, containing hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, and decane with concentrations of $10-30{\mu}mol/mol$, showed an uncertainty in a range of 0.79 % - 1.63 %.
