Analysis of Endothermic Regenerative Cooling Technologies by Using Hydrocarbon Aviation Fuels (탄화수소 항공유를 이용한 흡열재생냉각 기술분석)

  • In order to develop active cooling systems for a hypersonic cruise vehicle, a series of studies need to be preceded on regenerative cooling technologies by using endothermic reaction of liquid hydrocarbon aviation fuels. Among them, it is essential to scrutinize fluid flow/heat transfer/endothermic pyrolysis characteristics of supercritical hydrocarbons in a micro-channel, as well as to acquire thermophysical properties of hydrocarbon fuels in a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions. This study, therefore, reviewed those technologies and analyzed major findings in related research areas which have been carried out worldwide for the development of efficient operational regenerative cooling systems of a hypersonic flight vehicle.

Performance Analysis of Refrigeration Cycle of Hydrocarbon Refrigerant using Suction-Line Heat Exchanger (흡입관 열교환기를 이용한 탄화수소계 냉매용 냉동사이클의 성능 분석)

  • This paper considers the influence of suction-line heat exchangers on the efficiency of a refrigeration cycle using hydrocarbon refrigerants such as R290, R600a and R1270. These suction-line heat exchangers can, in some cases, yield improved system performance while in other cases they degrade system performance. A steady state mathematical model is used to analyze the performance characteristics of refrigeration cycle with suction-line heat exchanger. The influence of operating conditions, such as the mass flowrate of hydrocarbon refrigerants, inner diameter tube and length of suction-line heat exchanger, to the performance of the cycle is also analyzed in the paper. Results showed that the mass flowrate of hydrocarbon refrigerants, inner diameter tube and length of suction-line heat exchanger, and effectiveness have an effect on the cooling capacity, compressor work and RCI(Relative Capacity Index) of this system. With a thorough grasp of these effect, it is necessary to design the compression refrigeration cycle of hydrocarbon refrigerants using suction-line heat exchanger.

  • In the regeneratively cooled combustion chambers of liquid rocket engine using hydrocarbon fuels, coking occurs as the wall temperature increases which results in compounds deposition on the wall of cooling channels. This phenomenon reduces cooling capability of the coolant which finally causes damage to the combustor by overheating of the chamber wall. In this paper, experiment results using an electrical heating equipment to simulate the regeneratively cooled channel are introduced and based on the results the compatibility of copper alloy with hydrocarbon fuel Jet A-1 is investigated.

  • An experimental study of the combustion characteristics according to the equivalence ratio of hydrocarbon fuel/air premixture excited by ultrasonic standing wave are presented. The image of the propagating flame was acquired using a high-speed camera, and the combustion characteristics of each fuel were closely observed through image processing. it was conformed that ultrasonic standing wave has been found to stimulate the combustion reaction in the stoichiometric ratio.

  • The application of hydrocarbon refrigerant mixtures in a hermetic reciprocating compressor for dehumidifier is investigated. The selected refrigerants are R12, R134a, HC-Blend (R290/R600a), CX(R152a/R600a) and OS-l2a. Both theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed for the selected refrigerants. The test results of hydrocarbon refrigerants have been compared to traditional refrigerant(R12) and R134a. The results show that hydrocarbon refrigerant mixtures(HC-Blend, CX and OS-l2a) are very good alternatives in the refrigeration system for R12 and R134a.

Condensation Heat Transfer Characteristics of Hydrocarbon Refrigerants in Horizontal Tubes of 7.73 mm and 5.80 mm (7.73 mm와 5.80 mm 수평관내 탄화수소 냉매의 응축 열전달 특성)

  • 본 논문은 내경 7.73 mm와 5.80mm의 수평관내 프레온계 냉매 R-22와 탄화수소계 냉매 R-290과 600a의 응축 열전달 계수의 실험적 결과를 나타내었다. 실험장치는 압축기, 응축기, 팽창밸브, 증발기 등으로 구성된다. 응축 실험은 질량유속 $35.5{\sim}210.4\;kg/m^2s$이고, 응축온도 40$^{\circ}C$인 조건에서 수행하였다. 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 탄화수소계 냉매 R-290과 R-600a의 평균 열전달 계수는 프레온계 냉매 R-22보다 높게 나타났으며, R-600a의 평균 열전달 계수가 모든 관경에 대해 가장 높게 나타났다. 실험결과와 종래의 상관식을 비교한 결과, 모든 관경과 냉매에 대해 Haraguchi 등의 상관식이 가장 좋은 일치를 보였다. 그 중에서 Cavallini-Zecchin의 상관식은 7.73 mm 관경의 실험데이터와, Dobson 등의 상관식은 내경 5.80 mm 관경의 데이터와 좋은 일치를 보였다.

  • Cloud-point and bubble-point curves for poly(ethylene-co-13.8 mol% octene) ($PEO_{13.8}$) and Poly(ethylene-co-15.3 mol% octene) ($PEO_{15.3}$) were determined up to $150^{\circ}C$ and 450 bar in hydrocarbons which have different molecular size and structure. Whereas ($PEO_{15.3}$+ n-pentane) system has cloud-point and bubble-point type transitions, ($PEO_{15.3}$+ n-propane) and ($PEO_{15.3}$+ n-butane) systems do only cloud-point type transition. In cyclo-pentane, -hexane, -heptane, and -octane, $PEO_{15.3}$ has a bubble-point transition. ($PEO_{13.8}$+ n-butane) mixture has a critical mixture concentration at 5 wt% PEO. (PEO + hydrocarbon) mixtures exhibit LCST type behavior. Solubility of PEO increases with hydrocarbon size due to increasing dispersion interaction which is favorable to dissolve PEO.

  • The application of hydrocarbon refrigerants in a hermetic reciprocating compressor for refrigerator is investigated. The selected refrigerants are isobutane(R600a), propane(R290), R12, binary mixture of R600a/R290, and OS-21CII. Both theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed for the selected refrigerants. The test results of hydrocarbon refrigerants have been compared to the traditional refrigerant(R12). The results show that hydrocarbon refrigerants(HC-Blend, OS-21C II) are very good alternatives in the refrigeration system for R12.

  • The strengthened regulations for atmospheric emissions from ships have caused a necessity of new, alternative power system in ships for the low pollutant emissions and the high energy efficiency. Recently, new kinds of propulsion power system such as fuel cell system, which use hydrogen as an energy source, have been sincerely considered. Fuel conversion system to hydrogen is an essential part for fuel cell ship. We have investigated thermodynamically the steam reforming characteristics of hydrocarbons and alcohols for the fuel conversion systems.
