Elemental analysis, SEM-EDX, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and IR analysis were adopted to examine the quality of charred woods excavated from the underground of the Daewoongjeon Hall of Youngguksa Temple, Youngdong-gun, Chungbuk, Korea. A large amount of calcium was detected in SEM-EDX analysis. The analyses of chemical elements suggested that completely charred wood was carbonized at about $500^{\circ}C$. The XRD results indicated the destruction of cellulose crystalline region. The IR analysis exhibited that thermal degradation of wood component was different depending upon the carbonization temperature. It can be suggested from the results that PEG with different molecular weights should be used for the conservation of excavated charred woods.
The purpose of this study was to analyze AMS radiocarbon dating, using wiggle match, of a charcoal column excavated from a fired dwelling site (ra-#8) at the Pungnaptoseong earthen wall made in Baekje era. The result of wiggle matching for 6 decadal single-ring samples of the charcoal produced ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) as A.D. 190~280. It indicated that the dwelling site (ra-#8) belonged to the early and middle of the 3rd century. Radiocarbon dating results confirmed the date speculated by archaeologists according to dwelling structure and pottery style.
The purpose of this study is to provide an inquiry into paleovegetation (paleoenvironment), eruption age and inferred emplacement temperature of pyroclastic deposit using charcoal occurred in the Quaternary Nari Caldera, Ulleung Island. In order to obtain the data, we carried out species identification and tree-ring analysis, radiocarbon dating for the charcoal. This sample was collected from pumiceous deposit in lowermost member(Member N-5) of the Nari Tephra Formation, which corresponds to the wood branch that has well preserved the tree-ring structure. Speciation and outermost tree-ring of wood reveal Picea spp. and $263+{\alpha}$ years. The calibrated ages from the center(pith) to the outermost tree-ring are $20,260{\pm}230$, $19,995{\pm}245$, and $19,975{\pm}265cal\;BP$, respectively, which are accordant with the tree-ring position. The youngest age, <19,710 cal BP would have implications for the eruptive age of Member N-5. Our results indicate that Picea spp. is the paleovegetation representing that Nari Caldera was under cold and wet climate conditions during the late Pleistocene. Based on the silky luster, brittleness, color, and streak of charcoal, etc., the lowest emplacement temperatures of pyroclastic flow are interpreted to have been at least as high as $350{\sim}500^{\circ}C$.
The mode of occurrence of petrified woods from the Tertiary strata of Pohang Basin in Kyeongsangbug-do suggests that the petrified woods are all allochthonous fossils. Petrified woods as well as various types of wood fossils such as carbonized woods and charcoal woods were found. However, some lignified organic remains are rarely found in the bark part of petrified woods. X-ray diffraction analysis showed three types of minerals including Opal-CT, Opal-C, and quartz+cristobalite. The presence of these minerals indicates that silicification occurred under the low temperature. The tuffs are considered to be main source of supply of silica. Analysis of the kind of composing minerals and the condition of tissue preservation can predict that silicification is mainly occurred by replacement.
Pine bark was carbonized by using a small-scale experimental kiln and three different types of large-scale kilns (simple (400-$500^{\circ}C$), improved (600-$700^{\circ}C$) and special kiln (800-$1,000^{\circ}C$). The physical properties and pore structures of the bark charcoals prepared were analyzed. When the bark was carbonized at various temperatures ranging from 500 to $900^{\circ}C$in the presence of nitrogen, carbonization yield decreased rapidly with increasing carbonization temperature and it remained constant from 700 to $900^{\circ}C$. The carbonization yield of the bark was 16 - 18% higher than that of pine wood. The BET specific surface areas and iodine values increased with a decrease in carbonization yield. The BET specific surface areas of the bark charcoals reached about 400 -$500m^2/g$ for carbonization yield of 32-40%. The pine wood charcoal prepared at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 min resulted in a more microporous structure, whereas the bark charcoal prepared at the same condition was more mesoporous. The carbonization yields and physical properties such as iodine values and BET specific surface areas of bark charcoals prepared by using the large-scale kilns were very similar to those of the small-scale kiln. The results indicated that the pine bark could be used as starting material to produce good quality charcoal having a large specific surface area and a high carbonization yield.
This study evaluated fuel properties of composite materials which were prepared by mixing a waste activated carbon from the used purifier filter with torrefied wood powder. Wood species of the raw material of torrefied wood powder are oak wood (Quercus serrata Thunb. ex Murray) and pine wood (Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc). And the treatment conditions used for this study were 300 s, 450 s, and 600 s at $200^{\circ}C$ for the wood roaster. Also, the mixing ratios are 5 : 95, 10 : 90, 15 : 85, 20 : 80, 40 : 60, 60 : 40 and 80 : 20 (waste activated carbon : torrefied wood powder). The fuel properties such as highly heating value (HHV), elementary analysis and ash content were evaluated. The results obtained are followings; 1. Despite the same treatment condition of wood roasting, pine wood has higher carbon contents than oak wood. Therefore, pine wood indicated the optimum carbonization at low temperature and short treatment times. 2. The gross calorific value and ash content increased as the mixing ratio of waste activated carbon increased. 3. Mixtures of the waste activated carbon and torrefied wood powder showed greater gross calorific value than those of the mixtures of waste activated carbon and the untreated wood powder. Also, the pine wood resulted in higher heating value that thaose of the oak wood. 4. When composite fuels that were composed waste activate carbon and wood powder are used, higher temperature conditions are required because the combustion is incomplete at $800^{\circ}C$ and 4 hours. 5. The increasing rate of the gross calorific value of mixtures of waste activated carbon and untreated wood powder is higher than does the mixtures of waste activated carbon and torrefied wood powder. Also, this phenomenon is more obvious for pine woods. Therefore, an optimal mixing ratio of waste activated carbon was determined to be between 5% and 10% (wt%). Also, this condition satisfied the requirement of the No.1 grade of wood pellet.
In this study, we have measured the charring rate of solid sawn timber as a preceding step for develop performance based fire safety design method of wood framed building structures. The follows are the summary of fire test results carried out with $400{\times}400$ mm cross-section Douglas-fir in varied of thickness and grain directions. I) When the timber thickness increase under same dimension, the charring rate decreases gradually. It is seemed the charring layer up on a thickness roles as a insulation, gives combustion delaying time to specimen. 2) The charring rates measured at different depths (10, 20, 30, 40 mm) in timber which varying thickness (20, 40, 80, 120 mm) when exposed maximum 1 hour standard fire increase by 30 mm depth, but decrease at 40 mm. It is seemed the minimum charr layer should be 30 mm for having role of insulation. 3) The charring rate of cross section surface (direction of perpendicular to grain) was more high than that of grain direction. It can be explained by the cracks and gaps from greater charr contraction made more heat flux incident into timber.

It is widely known that the level of fire resistance of wooden structure is determined by a charring rate or charring depth, and these are adopted for fire design. In this study, specimens of domestic larch column with a lamination wooden type were prepared and the fire resistance properties such as the charring depth, load ratio and the specific charring rate suggested by EN Code investigated. Test results showed that as expected, the weakest part was the corner of the column, so that the charring depth of the corner was deeper than the other parts of the column. For the load ratio less than 0.9, it had little effect on the charring depth.
This study was designed to analyze the economic efficiency that is needed to develop and make practical application of a mobile carbonization apparatus, which are able to make wood charcoals and pyroligneous liquid at the logging field with debris. B/C ratio was employed to make an economic analysis, and sensitivity analysis with respect to change in price and interest rates also was made. Cylindrical type is the proper type for the mobile carbonization apparatus, when important factors such as handling capacity, a carbonization time, quality of products and assembling ability were considered. It weighs 400 kg, and a three-step fold-up equipment. The size of 2 (diameter) by 2.4 m (height) carbonization equipment required 1,500 kg wood debris per batch. A forty-eight to fifty-two carbonization time produced 300 kg of wood charcoal and $45{\ell}$ of pyroligneous liquid. The average life span of the apparatus was 5 years. If the private enterprise operated 100 batch, 80 batch, and 70 batch with one apparatus, the B/C ratio of them was greater than 1, indicating that the production is economically feasible. The period to achieve a break-even point required to be 4 years in case of 100 and 80 batches to 5 years in case of 70 batch. But the private enterprises should operate at least two apparatus for the profits. Also, if the production was to be profitable, the prices of wood charcoals and pyroligneous liquid should be at least 750 won per kg and 700 won per liter.
