  • In this paper, we have studied the complex permittivities and their influence on the design of microwave absorbers of E-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminates containing three different types of carbon-based nano conductive fillers such as carbon black (CB), carbon nano fiber (CNF) and multi-wall nano tube (MWNT). The measurements were performed fur permittivities at the frequency band of 0.5 GHz$\sim$18.0 GHz using a vector network analyzer with a 7 mm coaxial air line. The experimental results show that the complex permittivities of the composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the conductive fillers. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permittivities of the composites were proportional to the filler concentrations. But, depending on the types of fillers and frequency band, the increasing rates of the real and imaginary parts with respect to the filler concentrations were all different. These different rates can have an effect on the thickness in designing the single layer microwave absorbers. The effect of the different rates at 10 GHz was examined by using Cole-Cole plot; the plot is composed of a single layer absorber solution line and measured permittivities from these three types of composites. Single layer absorbers of 3 different thicknesses using carbon nano materials were fabricated and the -10 dB band of absorbing performances were all about 3 GHz.

  • In this study, we employ the full atomistic molecular dynamics simulation and finite element homogenization method to predict the thermo-mechanical properties of nanocomposites including carbon nanotube bundle. As the number of carbon nanotubes within the single bundle increases, the effective in-plane Young's modulus and in-plane shear modulus decrease, and in-plane thermal expansion coefficient increases, despite the same volume fraction of carbon nanotubes. To investigate the thickness of interphase zone, we employ the radial density distribution. It is investigated that the interphase thickness is almost independent on the number of carbon nanotubes within the single bundle. It is assumed that the matrix and interphase are isotropic materials. According to the predicted thermo-mechanical properties of interphase zone, the Young's modulus and shear modulus of interphase zone clearly decrease, and the thermal expansion coefficient increases. Based on the thermo-mechanical interphase behavior, we developed the multiscale homogenization model to predict the thermo-mechanical properties of PLA nanocomposites that include the carbon nanotube bundle.

  • The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system has many potential uses as an environmentally friendly power source. Carbon fiber composite bipolar plates are highly corrosion resistant and have high specific strength and stiffness in acidic environments, however, the relatively low electrical conductivity is a major issue which reduces the efficiency of PEMFC. In this study, electrically conductive particles (graphite powder and carbon black) are applied to carbon-epoxy composite prepregs to reduce the electrical resistance of the bipolar plates. The electrical resistance and mechanical properties are measured using conventional test methods, and a unit cell performance evaluation of developed carbon composite bipolar plates is performed to compare with the conventional bipolar plate.

  • Carbon fiber/aluminum (CF/Al) composites were successfully fabricated without pressure casting using wettability modification of carbon fiber. The wettability of liquid aluminum on carbon fibers was enhanced through electroless plating of copper on carbon fibers. Liquid aluminum was well infiltrated into carbon fiber bundles with Cu coating layer due to low wetting angle, and a lot of pores that existed in CF/Al composite without Cu coating on CF were greatly removed. However, a few tiny pores existed in carbon fiber bundles, which is due to not bad wettability between CF and Al but shrinkage cavity that was generated during cooling of CF/Al composite. The tiny pores could be effectively removed by a subsequent rolling.
