Retention of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of polymer composites at cryogenic temperature application is very important. In this work, single carbon tiber reinforced epoxy compositc was used to evaluate IFSS and apparent modulus under room and cryogenic temperatures. The property change of carbon and selected epoxy for particularly cryogenic temperature application were tested in tension and compression. Tensile strength and elongation of carbon fiber decreased at cryogenic temperature, whereas tensile modulus was almost same. On the other hand, epoxy matrix showed the increased tensile strength but decreased elongation. It can be due to maximum thermal contraction existing free volume in cryogenic temperature. IFSS increased up to $-10^{\circ}C$ and then decreased steadily. However, IFSS at cryogenic temperature was still similar to that at room temperature. This result is very useful to cryogenic application since selected epoxy toughness and interfacial adhesion can keep at such low temperature.

Carbon fiber-reinforced composites have excellent mechanical properties. However, the fracture toughness is a disadvantage due to brittle failure mode. The fracture toughness can be enhanced using hybridization with large-elongation fibers. In this study, polyamide (aramid) fibers are hybridized with carbon fiber with various stacking sequences. As a result, the Izod impact strength was enhanced by 63% with 25% aramid fiber hybridization. It is also shown that there is an optimal point in laminated composite hybridization, [CF/CAF2/CF]s stacking sequence.

In this paper, thermal conductivities of carbon-phenolic 8-harness satin weave composite, ACP302, were measured and predicted. In the analysis, the satin weave unit cell was identified and modeled discretely by 3-dimensional finite elements, considering the interlaced fiber tow architecture microscopically. At the unit cell boundary, the corresponding periodic boundary conditions were applied. The results were analyzed to investigate the effect of microstructural parameters such as stacking phase shifts, waviness ratio, and fiber volume fraction. The conductivities were also obtained by experiments and compared with the numerical results.
The fracture energy of glass fiber/carbon fiber/epoxy resin hybrid composite system was investigated in the aspect of fracture mechanism. Epoxy resin matrix was DGEBA-MDA-SN-HQ system. On the interface of glass fiber and matrix, post debone friction energy provided a major contribution to the fracture energy, and debonding energy and pull-out energy were of the similar value. In the case of fracture on the interface of carbon fiber and matrix, pull-out energy was the major contributor.
Due to the high specific strength and stiffness of the composite materials, the composite materials have been extensively used in various industries. In particular, carbon fiber reinforced composites are widely used in many mechanical structures. In addition, since carbon fiber reinforced composites have anisotropic properties, to understand the fatigue behavior of composites with different fiber orientation is very important for the efficient structural design. Therefore, in this paper, the effect fiber orientation on the fatigue life of composite materials was experimentally evaluated. For this purpose, tensile and fatigue tests were performed on the off-axis specimens (0°, 10°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°) of the composite materials. As a result of the fatigue tests, the fatigue strength of the composites decreased significantly as the fatigue strength slightly deviated from 0 degrees. On the other hand, the more deviated, the less decreased. This is because the role of supporting the load of fibers decreased as the stacking angle increased. In addition, the fatigue behavior was analyzed by introducing a fatigue strength ratio (Ψ) that eliminates the fiber orientation dependence of the off-axis fatigue behaviors on the unidirectional composites. The off-axis fatigue S-N lines can be reduced to a single line regardless of the fiber orientation by using the fatigue strength ratio (Ψ). Using the fatigue Ψ-N line, it is possible to extract back to any off-axis fatigue S-N lines of the composites with different fiber orientations.
In this work, the anodic oxidation of carbon fibers was carried out to enhance the mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced epoxy matrix composites. The surface characteristics of the carbon fibers were studied by FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied with interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$), and critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$). The anodic oxidation led to a significant change in the surface characteristics of the carbon fibers. The anodic oxidation of carbon fiber improved the mechanical interfacial properties, such as ILSS, $K_{IC}$, and $G_{IC}$ of the composites. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites anodized at 20% sulfuric/nitric (3/1) were the highest values among the anodized carbon fibers. These results were attributed to the increase of the degree of adhesion at interfaces between the carbon fibers and the matrix resins in the composite systems.

This study has a different direction from the existing technology of applying recycled carbon fiber obtained by recycling waste CFRP to CFRP again. A study was conducted to utilize recycled carbon fiber as a raw material for manufacturing a carbon/carbon (C/C) composite material comprising carbon as a matrix. First, it was attempted to recycle a commonly used epoxy resin composite material through a thermal decomposition process. By applying the newly proposed oxidation-inert atmosphere conversion technology to the pyrolysis process, the residual carbon rate of 1~2% was improved to 19%. Through this, the possibility of manufacturing C/C composite materials utilizing epoxy resin was confirmed. However, in the case of carbon obtained by the oxidation-inert atmosphere controlled pyrolysis process, the degree of oxygen bonding is high, so further improvement studies are needed. In addition, short-fiber C/C composite material specimens were prepared through the crushing and disintegrating processes after thermal decomposition of waste CFRP, and the optimum process conditions were derived through the evaluation of mechanical properties.

In this work, the mechanical and electrical properties, and thermal stability of vapor-grown carbon nanofibers/polyimide (VGCNFs/PI) composite film synthesized by in-situ polymerization were investigated in terms of tensile properties, volume resistivity and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. From the results, the addition of VGCNFs with a certain amount into polyimide led to obvious improvement in tensile strength. The volume resistivity of the films was decreased with increasing the VGCNFs content and the electrical percolation threshold appeared between 1 and 3 wt% of VGCNFs content, which was probably caused by the formation of interconnective structures among the VGCNFs in a composite system. The thermal stability of the film was higher than that of pure PI one. This result indicated that the crosslinking of VGCNFs/PI Composites was enhanced by well-distribution of YGCNFs in PI resin, resulting in the increase of the thermal stability of the resulting composites.

This paper presents an experimental study on the enhancement of electromagnetic shielding (EMI) properties of glass fiber, carbon fiber, and glass-carbon fiber composites by adding layers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In the case of glass-fiber composites, spraying 0.1~0.2 g of MWCNT over a fiber area of $200mm{\times}200mm$ (1.8~3.6 ${\mu}m$ in thickness) resulted in significant improvement in EMI shielding effectiveness (SE). Also, when applying multiple MWCNT layers, it was more effective to place the layers concentrated near the center of the composite rather than spreading them out. On the contrary, inherently conductive carbon fiber and glass-carbon fiber composites did not show appreciable improvement with the addition of MWCNT layers. In order to maximize the effectiveness of carbon nanomaterials as EMI shielding fillers, it is imperative to understand the effect of these materials on various EMI shielding mechanisms and their interactions.
Optimal dispersion and fabrication conditions of carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded in phenolic resin were determined by electrical resistance measurement; and interfacial property was investigated between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites by electro-micromechanical techniques. Wettability of carbon fiber was improved significantly after plasma treatment. Surface energies of carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites were measured using Wilhelmy plate technique. Since surface activation of carbon fiber, the advancing contact angle decreased from $65^{\circ}$ to $28^{\circ}$ after plasma treatment. It was consistent with static contact angle results of carbon fiber. Work of adhesion between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites was higher than that without modification. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and apparent modulus also increased with plasma treatment of carbon fiber.
