  • In this study, a usefulness of the iterative solution procedures is reviewed for the elasto-plastic large deflection analysis of imperfect plates by finite element method. Three typical solution techniques such as simple incremental(SI) method, Newton-Raphson(NR) method and modified Newton-Raphson (mNR) method are compared. It is concluded that for thin plates which are given rise to the large deflection, iteration for the convergence of the unbalance force should be performed and in this case mNR method is more useful than NR method since the computing time of the former becomes to be a half of the latter, in which the accuracy of the result remains same. For thick plates or thin plates with large initial deflection, however, the use of SI method is quite better since the unbalance force may be negligible.

  • The plate bucking is very important design criteria when the ship is composed of high tensile steel plates. The structures under the action of excessive exhibit local failure associated with bucking until they reach the ultimate limit state as a whole. Precise assessment of the behaviour of plate above primary buckling load is important. In this connection, series of elastic plastic large deflection analyses are performed on rectangular plates with aspect ratio 1.4 applying the finite element method. In this paper, the buckling/plastic collapse behavior of ship plates with secondary buckling is investigated. It has found that the other deflection componentes also increase with the increase of compressive load above the primary buckling load.

  • The ship plating is generally subjected to combined in-plane load and lateral pressure loads. In-plane loads include axial load and edge shear, which are mainly induced by overall hull girder bending and torsion of the vessel. Lateral pressure is due to water pressure and cargo. These load components are not always applied simultaneously, but more than one can normally exist and interact Hence, for more rational and safe design of ship structures, it is of crucial importance to better understand the interaction relationship of the buckling and ultimate strength for ship plating under combined loads. Actual ship plates are subjected to relatively small water pressure except for the impact load due to slamming and panting etc. The present paper describes an accurate and fast procedure for analyzing the elastic-plastic large deflection behavior up to the ultimate limit state of ship plates under combined loads. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of plates under axial compressive loads and lateral pressure loads are investigated through ANSYS elastic-plastic large deflection finite element analysis with varying lateral pressure load level.

  • Estimation of the buckling and ultimate strength of a continuous stiffened plate subjected to combined transverse compression and lateral pressure is of high importance to ensure the safety of ship structures, particularly for the bottom plating under a deep draft condition For example, bottom plating of bulk carriers is subjected to transverse thrust caused by the bending of double bottom structure and the direct action of pressure on the side shells. Most of experimental tests, theoretical approach and numerical researches have been performed on the buckling and ultimate strength behaviour of plates or stiffened plates under combined compression and lateral pressure. With regard to stiffened panels, however, most of studies have been concerned with the load conditions of combined longitudinal thrust and lateral pressure, while fewer studies have been performed for the combined transverse thrust and lateral pressure. In addition, the previous researches are mainly concerned with an isolated rectangular plate simply supported along the all edges, whereas actual ship plating is continuous across the transverse frames and heavy girders. In the present paper, a series of elastoplastic large deflection FEA on a continuous stiffened plate is performed and then clarify the characteristic of collapse mode and explain the effect of transverse compression.

  • In this study, an attempt for formulating a new and simplified rectangular finite element having only four corner nodal points is made to analyze the elastic-plastic large deformation behaviour up to the ultimate limit state of plates with initial imperfections. The present finite element contains the geometric nonlinearity caused by both in-plane and out-of-plane large deformation because for very thin plates the influence of the former may not be negligible. Treatment of expanded plastic zone in the plate thickness direction of the element is simplified based upon the concept of plastic node method so that the elastic-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is derived by the simple matrix operation without performing complicated numerical integration. Thus, a considerable saving of the computational efforts is expected. A computer program is also completed based on the present formulation and numerical calculation for some examples is performed so as to verify the accuracy and validity of the program.

  • Design of general steel structure had applied to achieve elastic designing concept so far. Because elastic design supposes that whole structure complies with elasticity formula so that achieve via allowable stress of material. It is concept that calculate stress distribution of construction about action external load and estimate load when the maximum stress reaches equally with allowable stress that is established by maximum safety load of the structure. But, absence that compose actuality structure by deal with external load increase small success surrender and structure hardness falls and structure in limited state finally on the whole as showing complicated process by interference between collapse and buckling under compression. Applied ANSYS (elasto-plasticity large deformation finite element method) to be mediocrity finite element program for analysis method and analysis control used in Newton-Raphson method & Arc-length method.

  • In this paper, an efficient method for the analysis of damage and strength of double bottom structure in stranding is described by using idealized structural unit method. Also a procedure for the determination of the effective double bottom height which is required in order to protect the inner-bottom plate is proposed. In the comparison between the present solution and he existing experimental and numerical results in stranding, its observed that the present method gives reasonable results requiring very shorts computiong times. The present method is then applied to the double bottom structure of 40K product oil carrier which is designed by the double skin design concept as an example. By performing the series of analysis, the influence of vertical member space, plate thickness and double bottom height on the energy absorption capacity of the double bottom structure in stranding is investigated. Also the minimum double bottom height with varying each design variable Is calculated based on the above result.
